15.01.2022 BOOST IN BIKE INFRASTRUCTURE Group calls meeting to hear more TAKING a peek at headlines across the country in recent times, it’s easy to picture a raging rivalry between cyclists and motorists a worrying battle of attrition on our nation’s roads.... But to the contrary, cyclists in Mackay have applauded the behaviour of most drivers on our region’s bitumen. However, they do want to see better infrastructure to prevent riders being left in no man’s land, and to provide more clarity to drivers. Thankfully, Mackay Regional Council has locked in about $3.7 million in funding to spent on infrastructure for cyclists in coming years, (with $2.7 million on the radar) a spokesman said. Advocacy group Bicycle Mackay hopes the windfall will fill in the gaps in bike lanes around the region, among other measures, and encourage more residents to hit the pedals. Bicycle Mackay president Peter McCallum has organised a meeting at 156 Wood Street, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on August 27 to fill in interested parties on the council’s next move regarding the funding. Mackay councillor Kevin Casey is due to provide an overview, while deputy mayor Amanda Camm and councillors Ross Gee and Justin Englert have also expressed interest in attending. Cyclist Jeanie Tucci said she normally feels safe on Mackay roads. Drivers and cyclists here tend to really respect each other, she added. Mr McCallum agreed and said the introduction of minimum passing distance laws (1m when passing a bicycle rider in a 60km/h or less speed zone or 1.5m where the speed limit is over 60km/h) has led to much better relationships between cyclists and drivers. Because drivers understand how to pass a cyclist now, he said. It seemed they used to be a bit confused about whether to squeeze through or make room. Now drivers back off and wait until it’s safe. There’s occasional idiots, but 99 per cent of drivers are great. Mrs Tucci’s husband, Peppe Tucci, said impatience led to most run-ins between cyclists and motorists, but he largely gave drivers a pat on the back. While the three riders the Daily Mercury spoke with had few complaints regarding sharing the roads, they did ask everyone to check their mirrors before opening their car doors an easy way to collect an unseen cyclist. They also emphasised it’s totally legal to cross double white lines when passing a cyclist as long as it’s safe to do so.
