14.01.2022 A TIMELY REMINDER ABOUT AUTISTIC SHUTDOWN (graphic + links) Text: I Want You To Know About...Autistic Shutdown. Autistic shutdown is like an internalized meltdo...wn. While the person is experiencing a lot of emotions, they can't express them outwardly. It may look like this: zoning out, exhaustion/falling asleep, hiding/defensive position. How can allistic (non-autistic) folks help? - Safety first! Help them to a quiet place w/ minimal stimuli. - Be sensory sensible! Have a kit tailored to their needs. - Eliminate all expectations/demands. They are currently overloaded. - Reduce interactions, giving them space and time. REMEMBER: Autistic shut-down is NOT stubbornness, laziness or disrespect. Autistic shut-down is involuntary, painful, exhausting. Please, be patient and compassionate. 14.01.2022 Phew- What a term! This is a lengthy post full of gratitude. I would like to thank our amazing team (Jenny, Megan and Cindy) for their incredible efforts over the past months. I am in awe of what was achieved and feel positive that we are positioned to support our clients in even better ways as the year progresses. I also thank our clients (parents and children) who trusted us as we negotiated all things Covid-19, tele-health and "hybrid" service delivery. It really has been... the ultimate in "flexible thinking". This has been a BIG few months for other reasons too... We moved into our new office where we have commenced some renovations and have generally enjoyed our beautiful, relaxing space. We mentored Brooke, a final year occupational therapy student for her 8 week placement, 100% via tele-practice! We reaped the benefit of her tech savvy and creative ways as she produced a range of digital resources for us. We only met Brooke once in person over the entire course of her placement with us! The wonders of technology... So much learning, effort and heart has gone into term two and I confess to being a little tired now! With that- our therapists are taking a much needed break over the next week before preparing for term three. Thank you and see you all soon! See more

13.01.2022 What fun ideas!

13.01.2022 Many of our colleagues and loved ones are in Victoria. If you are outside of Victoria and would like some practical ideas on how you can be of real support, Tess has some great ideas in this article. We love you Victoria and stand with you X

11.01.2022 Today we said goodbye to our clinic at 50 Docker street which has been home for the past 2 years. Can you believe how time flies? Although our move was on the cards for June, the Covid-19 situation brought things forward a few months. While we are all social distancing, our OTs will continue to provide tele-health services and our ESDM service goes into "hibernation". When it is OK to see people face to face we will be excited to see you all in our new premises based in Kooringal. A huge thank you to Shelley Brennan Speech Pathology for providing us with our home for the past few years. We will miss you a lot! More details to come over the next couple of months. Meanwhile, don't you love this little house one of our little people made outside with pebbles and sticks?

09.01.2022 Well done Simone.

09.01.2022 Let's ride this wave together : Some people have described coping with this pandemic as akin to running a marathon rather than a sprint. My thoughts are that it is more like trying to surf amongst huge, unpredictable waves .There are moments of calm and even boredom but then a wave approaches in a way that wasn't expected! Different skills are needed for different stages in the surfing process such as patience, balance, flexibility, decision making, bravery and resili...ence. Bidgeekids Occupational Therapy would like to be there with you to help you surf through these times. Over the next week and a half, we will be focusing on developing offerings which better meet your needs in a time like no other in our memory. This means that we will need to use different therapy tools and offer more flexibility and options as we position ourselves to support you for the long term. Stay tuned as we prepare for term two and beyond See more

09.01.2022 It might be school holidays but I am busy- any guesses what is going on here?

07.01.2022 This topic has come up in several parent occupational therapy consultations this week. Being part of a family means we all pitch in for the greater good. It’s not all about me-it is about we. It’s not all about rewards/punishment.

06.01.2022 Our professional friends are suffering in Victoria and now is the time to action some moral and practical support. A simple way to show some love is to choose a... colleague and surprise them with a home delivered coffee or lunch. Double bonus as you would support a local Victorian cafe too. Otherwise you could reach out and offer some connection. Maybe you have some skills in telehealth you could share... Perhaps you are just a great listener... Why not organise a video chat at lunch time? Have a think and reach out. We love our Victorian colleagues. #coffeeforcolleagues See more

03.01.2022 We have a particularly cute therapy assistant at work today! Meet Sean the bunny. He is helping Jen out with some of her OT programs today.

01.01.2022 It’s RU OK Day. It’s great that this organisation is focusing on what to do AFTER the RUOK? Conversation too .
