24.01.2022 These 2 pictures are of the same wombat. Beautiful on one side & then from the other side you can see the situation he is in from Mange. He is but one that we are treating here each week. Those wombats that are in need of greater care, are caught & taken to a sanctuary in Kelso where the Wildlife Worriers give more intensive treatment before being returned to the park. Mange is something we have only seen in our park wombats since Christmas. The wildlife careers receive no fu...nding so reply heavily on donations for building and maintaining these sanctuarys & also for purchasing the treatments they require to give the wombats in the Tamar Valley a chance of survival. For those of you who read this who care & would like to help, you can donate & all your funds will go to the care of wombats in the Tamar Valley. https://www.gofundme.com/wombat-rescue-tasmania See more

22.01.2022 For anyone concerned, there are no bush fires in the Tamar Valley. It has been hot but a cool breeze has been blowing off the river. We have availability for unpowered sites and 2 powered sites. Air quality is good. Our thoughts are with all those who may be effected by the fires around Tasmania.

22.01.2022 The driveway lined with Naked Ladies. Beautiful show.

22.01.2022 March long weekend just around the corner with Easter just 3 weeks after. Unpowered sites can have fire pots as long as they meet height requirements. Call the park or go on line to find more details.

22.01.2022 Wow what a week at Kelso Sands. Firstly, a huge apology to the guests who had the unfortunate experience of finding they had no showers on the morning of their departure on the Saturday before the start of the long weekend. Also a thank you for accepting our apology at the time & also for advising us of the issue. That was definitely not planned. Upon investigation it was found that the main control unit in our hot water service had blown up taking the main power circuit for ...all the showers in the amenities block with it! Many thanks must next go to the amazing families who elected to stay and support us even when we informed them there were no showers or hot water for their stay. Hats off to you for your understanding!!!! A huge shout out to Reeces at Invermay who got the only replacement hot water service in Tasmania up from Hobart overnight, to our electrician, to Peter Kelly, our gas plumber who dropped everything to diagnose the problem, get everything up and running by Tuesday evening before the long weekend. Thank you all so much. Last but not least, what a fantastic long weekend we have just had. Thank you to the many groups that came up and enjoyed the park despite the showery weather on Saturday. Congratulations must also go to the brave families who celebrated the opening of our pool. Much fun and laughter was heard despite the water being somewhat below optimum temperature still. Dont forget your booking for Christmas & New Years. We have The Songbirds Karaoke booked for New Years Night starting at 8pm for all guests to enjoy. They were a great hit last year with kids and mums & dads all having a great time. 5pm. Parks & wildlife love to come and meet with the kids and talk to them about wildlife in the area and how to look after them.

21.01.2022 A seafog has just moved through the park whickh looks amazing.

20.01.2022 What an amazing day to see this beautiful big Echidna staying close to the park perimeter, in its safe zone. They truely are so beautiful & we are so privileged to have such creatures call Kelso Sands home.

19.01.2022 Thank you to all our guests who come to celebrate the Easter weekend. Some new faces and some regulars came out to camp even though the forcast wasnt favourable. It was a pretty nice weekend. We were all greeted this morning with 8 geese who decided this was a nice place to stay. At least for today. Thanks again to everyone. Hope to catch up again after winter.

19.01.2022 Been home for 2 weeks and the weather has been as cold as I can remember. Cold south westerly day after day n snow on the mountains everyday for the last week n up until middle of next week. Keep in mind our wombats, many suffering from mange n not carrying all their coat. Here are some priceless pictures of our much loved wombats. Top pic. Out of the wind eating fresh grass clipping, another asleep on a mat outside a cabin n the last, under a plant just sleeping. Hopefully their treatment is successfull.

17.01.2022 Here are some amazing pictures of some of the wombats in our park that we have been treating for mange since approximately April 2017. I am really happy to say that they are all at different stages of recovery.....but doing something that we have never seen a wombat do in our park in the previous 13 years. It is nothing to find a wombat in the middle of the day, asleep on a door mat in the sun but out of the wind, face down in the sandpit...asleep in the middle of the day. As...leep in the wood chip by a noisy cabin... you got it, asleep in the middle of the day in the sun. Asleep on blue metal roadway in the full sun, under a plant. Just about anywhere, it appears they just run out of energy and just lay down and fall asleep. There is no such thing as nocturnal at the moment.....The greatest shame is that we have an election in a few weeks, & no one party seems to really care that these wombats have got mange & that we may loose them completely. The wombats in our park may be some of the last wombats that survive mange on mainland Tasmania. The government was quick to be handing out permits to property owners to shot wombats with or without mange, but in the Tamar Valley we are lucky enough to have had the Wombat Rescue tirelessly having cared for so many manged wombats. Hats off to them & all the time & money it has cost them. No government funding to help save a wombat native to Tasmania. We have guests who come here from all over the world to see wombats walking around free, no cages, this is home. Guests are asking what is the government doing to help...answer. NOTHING...... Guests are happy to make a donation towards the expenses of buying treatments. See more

13.01.2022 What an absolutely beautiful big Echidna. We don't have the privilege of seeing them daily so it is always a wonderful sight when they decide to wonder around the fringes of the park.

11.01.2022 We would like to update to our interested readers about our wombats. I am sorry to say that we have lost almost all our wombats that we had in our park and surrounding area due to Sarcoptic Mange. There has been a large number of volunteers associated with Wombat Rescue Tasmania plus ourselves and residents in the park over the last three years doing our upmost to save them, but unfortunately, we are now down to about five or six in the area. Treating a wombat is exacerbated ...by the fact that they live in a burrow which is a perfect breeding ground for the mange mite, they also share burrows, so if a healthy one decides to shelter for the night, and there is active mange in the burrow, then off is goes again. They also are not too happy about being treated, and that is probably the main reason for us not being as successful as we would have liked in treated these guys. I am attaching a picture of a wombat that we believe we have saved, but it still displays some crust around its legs and some around its face. I would like to thank all those Volunteers with Wombat Rescue Tasmania who have the passion to try and make a difference to the outcome of our Native Wildlife. See more

07.01.2022 This poor wombat appeared one day, blind & deaf & I can only imagine in unbelievable pain. Treated, he slowly came back & is still one that we are treating today. How long they will need to be treated is unknown, but we are seeing good progress & some now appear with almost no mange & new fluffy fur.

06.01.2022 Now this picture is what it is all about. This is what the Wildlife Worriors n so many others like us at BIG4 Kelso Sands are all about. Keeping the dream alive. 01.01.2022 Another wombat recovering from mange that is just enjoying the sun. Only trouble is he decided on the middle of the road and had to be moved along for his safety. Shame the goverment doesnt see fit to do some research on why the wombats are doing such strange things.
