17.01.2022 "The Iron Master" Arthur Saxon born Arthur Hennig The only man to defeat Eugen Sandow in a public event. ... Grand Music Hall in Sheffield, England, on February 26, 1898 Saxon lifted a 110-pound kettle-weight to his shoulder, holding it there with only his little finger while a 160-pound man climbed over his back and sat on the weight. Saxon then bent-pressed the 270-pound total; Sandow refused to even try this stunt. Next, Saxon, using his whole hand, performed the same feat with a 180-pound kettle-weight and 188-pound Oscar Hilgenfeldt (the third of the original Saxon trio, in addition to Arthur and Arno) climbing atop it for a 368-pound total. Saxon did not stand erect, but did bent-press to arm’s length. Sandow, after testing the kettle-weight, declined to try to repeat the lift. Finally, Saxon bent-pressed a 264-pound barbell on his second attempt, standing erect. Sandow required five tries to get the bell to arm’s length but he could never stand erect, making it an incomplete lift. Sandow had been defeated by the young upstart. 1899 he did a world tour with the Ringling Bros Circus as seen in the photo!. On his tours famed Scottish strongman Donald Dinnie heard of Saxon’s claims, he refused to believe anyone could be that strong. Saxon, then 26, paid a visit to Dinnie in October 1904 and, using Dinnie’s weights, bent-pressed 340.5 pounds, thus gaining Dinnie’s support and praise. This is a very small glimpse of LEGENDARY CIRCUS strongman for more stories and history check out @historyofstrengthsports #circus #strongman #circusstrongman #history #saxon

11.01.2022 GUSTAV FRISTENSKY...STRONGMAN / WRESTLER Gustav Fristensky was a Czech strongman, Greco-Roman wrestler and professional wrestler who competed in the first half ...of the 20th century. During his career he won nearly 10,000 matches, the first one when he was 19 years old and the last one when he was 72. He is considered the strongest Czech and a legendary symbol of strength for many of his fellow countrymen. Fristensky was born in 1879 as one of six children in the village of Kamhajek, now a part of Krechor near Koln. By age seven he was riding horses and plowing fields. At fourteen, Fristensky's parents sent him to become a blacksmith. During a dispute in the workshop, one of his fellow apprentices passed him a red-hot horseshoe, which caused serious burns to his hands. Following three months of home remedies his father allowed him to apprentice as a butcher. After training, Fristensky moved to the city of Brno. While in Brno, Fristensky began to attend a local health club. In 1900, his club sent him to fight the top wrestlers from Cental Moravia. He won. The same year, he captured his first international competition. Three years later, he became the amateur European champion in Greco-Roman wrestling. Starting his professional wrestling career, before World War I, Fristensky traveled and competed across the world, including Southern and Northern America, where he fought with the likes of Frank Gotch, George Lurich and Gus Schoenlein. In 1929, nearing age 50, Fristensky became the professional European champion and appeared in the film "The Hangman of Prague." Along with his brother, he purchased a large farm near Sternberk. The town was a part of the Sudetenland and the farm was confiscated by Germans after the Munich Agreement of 1938. In 1943, during World War II, Fristensky joined the resistance movement and was imprisoned. His wife bribed a Nazi commander to free him. At the end of the war, the farm was ransacked when soldiers of the Red Army resided there. The land was later collectivized by the Communist authorities. In his later years, Fristensky became so improvished, he sold his trophies and other memorabilia to survive. Still, in 1956, he received the title Merited Master of Sports. Gustav Fristensky, the legend, died in 1957, at age 77.
