25.01.2022 Beautiful gypsum crystals from outback Australia. Gypsum is always popular because it is abundant and affordable. We have gypsum from all around Australia as well as overseas countries such as Morocco, England and Peru.

25.01.2022 Some of Maliks treasures at the recent Hobart Gem Show. No more gem shows in Tassie for a while but you still have the rock shop. Call or text me on 0409 611 864 if you are planning a visit.

25.01.2022 A corner of the fossil room with pictures of trilobite hunting in Wales. The two large framed fossils are replicas (Rhamphorhynchus and Archaeopteryx). If they were original they would be in a bank vault somewhere. Still look nice though.

25.01.2022 A corner of the rock shop. So many hidden treasures.

25.01.2022 Heres a big slab of brecciated mookaite from Western Australia. The transparent matrix holding it all together is fluorescent which is really neat. We have lots of mookaite in the shop in a range of colours. Reminder: The Rock Shop is open Saturday and Sunday 11 to 3:30. To visit on weekdays call or text me on 0409 611 864 to arrange a time.

24.01.2022 Over the last few months we have been building up the rock pile and inviting our customers to climb all over it looking for little treasures. If you visit the rock shop be sure to ask if you can explore the rock pile. Now, I just need a few more rocks.

24.01.2022 Tourmaline and quartz from Tasmanias wild West Coast. We have tourmaline in a range of colours and mineral species from locations around Australia and the World. Definitely worth a look.

23.01.2022 THE NEW NORMAL. We have lost our overseas visitors. We have lost our interstate visitors. We have lost our Tasmanian visitors from anywhere north of Oatlands. That leaves us with visitors from the Greater Hobart area. So dont ask me if we are busy. The flip side is that Im getting heaps of stuff done that Ive been putting off for years so the rock shop gets tidier each day. So, the new normal is as follows:- Rock Shop open Saturdays and Sundays 11 to 3.30. No need to worry about social distancing. Youll be lucky to see another customer. On weekdays the shop is open if you call or text me on 0409 611 864 to arrange a time to visit the rock shop. This weeks picture is coral quartz from India.

23.01.2022 This drilling rig was operating at the southern end of the Bridgewater causeway this week. They said they were drilling through to China but I think it was a test hole for the new Bridgewater bridge which is supposed to open in 2024. So far they have drilled through 50 metres of Permian mudstone so China is still a long way off.

23.01.2022 Dehne and Maureens stall at this years Hobart Gem Show. Not sure when the next Gem Show will be held in Tasmania but rock shops are open for anyone needing a crystal fix. Our shop is open Saturdays and Sundays from 11 to 3.30 and any time on weekdays if you call or text me on 0409 611 864 to arrange a time to arrange

22.01.2022 Happy Australia Day. The rock shop will be open from 11 to 2.30 today.

20.01.2022 Holiday photos from Namibia. I wish I could go back this year.

20.01.2022 Please help me to keep the rock shop safe, stay healthy and keep the rock shop open by not bringing kids and bored partners to the shop until the virus crisis is over. (Kids spread the virus but often dont show symptoms). Thanks, Tony

20.01.2022 The Rock Pile is open this weekend. Saturday and Sunday 11 to 3.30. Find yourself some treasures!

20.01.2022 A nice specimen of Ruby Spinel in Marble from Myanmar. It visited the rock shop recently but did not stick around. Thats life I suppose.

19.01.2022 A nice little bit of Lobster Creek Jasper from an outcrop near Ulverstone. We may be stuck in Tasmania for the duration of the pandemic but we can still explore Tasmanias fascinating geology!

19.01.2022 The rock shop is operating normally while virus infection rates in Tasmania are at a very low level. So, we are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 to 4. On weekdays call or text me on 0409 611 864 to arrange a time. And this weeks picture is bustamite, sphalerite and calcite from the Zinc Corp mine in Broken Hill, New South Wales. Quite pretty really.

19.01.2022 Lots of lovely selenite (satin spar) from Morocco. We have a great selection.

17.01.2022 The Hobart Gem Show is on today in the Grandstand pavilion at the Glenorchy Showground, so if you missed it yesterday hurry along and see it before it closes. It might be the last gem show you get to go to for a while!

17.01.2022 Kyanite, the facilitator of love. What better choice for Mothers Day? Kyanite and Quartz from Minas Gerais in Brazil. Come up to the rock shop this sunny Mothers Day and get yourself a piece. The shop is open subject to appropriate COVID protocols.

17.01.2022 Spare a thought for the ladies in Namibia, Africa, who sell crystals beside the road to passing tourists. This lady is holding a tray of aquamarine crystals. (I bought the lot!) Namibia is completely cut off from the outside world because of the virus so these good people have no income and no way to feed their families. Most Australians have it easy!

17.01.2022 I tidied up the rock pile today and found two pieces of Kauri gum and a piece of Malachite. I might have to tidy up again tomorrow!

16.01.2022 Himalayan quartz from Nepal. Such amazing variety from one location. We have quartz from all around the world. How about starting a quartz collection?

12.01.2022 A forest of gemstone generators in the rock shop. Always popular and so many to choose from!

12.01.2022 Ive got crabs! And trilobites and ammonites and shark teeth and amber and brachiopods and fossil fish. This crab lived and died at Gunn Point in the Northern Territory and has now become part of the fossil record. To see our wonderful selection of fossils call or text me on 0409 611 864 to arrange a private viewing.

12.01.2022 My 10 year old son loves science, rocks & crystals & says he’d like to be a Geologist when he is older! He is such a sweetie & gets so excited reading, research...ing & collecting! After doing a bit of looking around for crystal shops around Tasmania, we came across one called ‘The big Tasmanian rock shop’ & figured we had to check it out. The fact that I’m posting about it, shows how impressed we were! My son, his twin sister & our family friend headed there yesterday & we were blown away by the amount of rocks, crystals & fossils! It was incredible! We can’t wait to go back again! So, for anyone in Tassie (or visiting!), it’s in New Norfolk & it’s a ‘must visit’ - Tony (the owner who we met there yesterday) isn’t there all the time but the sign says he is more than happy to come & open up if needed (got to love that service!) Do you collect crystals? Which one is your favourite. Wishing you a lovely day! Take Care of You, Collette x https://www.facebook.com/bigtasrockshop/

09.01.2022 More shelves. More rocks. More fun.

08.01.2022 This mystery rock was collected by an abalone diver from the sea bed south of Hells Gates on Tasmanias wild west coast. There were many of them in the area where it was found. It is very hard. I dont think its flint. Any ideas?

08.01.2022 Getting plastered. Another useful man-made rock.

02.01.2022 This seriously weird rock is Zebra Stone from the Kununurra Region of Western Australia. In spite of its remarkably regular pattern it is 100% natural. This is one of only a few pieces that we have left. Geology is amazing.

02.01.2022 A big batch of labradorite with amazing iridescent colours from Madagascar just arrived. I will put it out in the shop today. Should be pretty popular. Prices from $4 to $28.

02.01.2022 This is pretty accurate :D Credit: https://www.picuki.com/media/2254037881391578235

01.01.2022 Its nice to see a bit of bling outside the rock shop this week.

01.01.2022 Half of this Manchurian pear tree in front of the rock shop fell over this week and it wasnt even windy. I sometimes park my car in the shade of this tree. Not any more!
