24.01.2022 One of BINTEL's Kiwi customers, Simon Lewis, sent us this image of the Vela Supernova Remnant. It's a large composite work shot over three night using a ZWO ASI294MM through a Askar FRA400. It's one of the better ones we've seen of this jewel in the Southern skies. The coloured filaments you see in this image are the outer layers of a massive star about 800 light years from Earth that exploded in a supernova some 11,000 years ago. Tech details of the exposure - 40 x 600s ...HA 40 x 600s OIII @ Gain 120 (-20c) - 3nm Chroma Filters. Processing entirely in PixInsight. Thanks for the share Simon! 24.01.2022 Did you know that BINTEL has some super handy online tools? For example, here's one of Australia's most comprehensive calculators for how well popular telescopes and cameras work together. It even has has an image previewer for deep space and Solar System objects. Perfect if you're thinking about getting into astrophotography or after a new camera.

23.01.2022 Before the Sydney Observatory was built in 1858, Sydney didn’t have an accurate time standard. The Observatory’s first function was to calculate the correct tim...e from the movement of the stars. The Time Ball signalled the time to ships and the post office in Martin Place at 1pm each day. Back in operation this week, the site's Time Ball also celebrates its 162 year anniversary today. : Marinco Kojdanovski

23.01.2022 Thanks Neil for the kind words!

22.01.2022 JUNE IN SPACE! As winter sets in some planets get closer to opposition which will start in July. Jupiter, Saturn and Mars are all getting visibly bigger in the meantime. Apart from some conjunctions throughout the month, there isn’t too much else happening. Mars and the Moon will get close on the 13th, Venus will do the same on 19th. Mars and Neptune will come within 1.6 of each other on the 14th. Jupiter, Saturn and the Moon will all get together around the 8th and 9th. T...he busy Sagittarius and Scorpio region of the Milky Way is now quite high around midnight and filled with interesting nebulae & clusters, while other areas away from the Milky Way are loaded with interesting galaxies like Centaurus A and Sombrero to find. Here’s a trick if you’re wondering what to photograph just browse the Ice In Space Deep Space forums and see what the incredible Southern Hemisphere astrophotographers there are posting today... It’s like a what’s up guide to the sky in real time! http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=7 The Fighting Dragons of Ara is a current favourite so we're sharing Nik Axaris' excellent recent capture of them here. Clear Skies! - The Bintel Team

22.01.2022 Bintel will be live streaming on the 9th of October 2000 2100 AEST (depending on weather) we will be viewing: - Saturn - Jupiter - Mars ... - M8 (lagoon Nebula) - 47 Tucanae (NGC104) - Sculptor Galaxy (NGC 253) See more

20.01.2022 A bit of Sunday morning astro news. More on the history of the Milky Way. Plus there's a new object too: Kraken We see our home galaxy, the Milky Way, as as a misty band across the sky on a really dark night and so beautiful to photography using a DSLR and a Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer mount.... It's long been thought the vast Milky Way is result of a merger between several older galaxies. But exactly what merged and when was a trick to study. A bit like trying to unscramble scrambled eggs. Now researchers have trained a complex AI (artificial intelligence) system to identify the original galaxies contained in the Milky Way using only globular clusters, the dense ancient clusters of stars that appear like sparkling fuzzy balls through telescopes of all sizes. This produced a "family tree" showing a number of older galaxies that merged together to form our Milky Way. Probably the most important of these mergers was with an enigmatic galaxy that's simply been labelled Kraken. The Milky Way isn't finished yet. There's another merger with the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) in few billion years. Now that one is going to get future astrophotographers snapping away.

18.01.2022 How many stars can you see? One the the closest star clusters to Earth, the Pleiades (M 45) is now visible in our night sky. This glittering portrait was captured by BINTEL customer, Andrew Wall, with a BT-202 Bintel 8" F4 Imaging Newtonian telescope and was a test run for his new ZWO ASI533MC Pro camera. As the Pleiades are visible from so many parts of the world they've been part of human cultures since ancient times. They're a group of mainly middle-aged B class stars. Ea...sily spotted with your eyes alone, even a small telescope or binoculars will reveal many more. In total there's thought to be about 1,000 members of the group. The beautiful, ghostly clouds of interstellar gas reveal themselves in images like this one. The glow comes from light reflecting off the hot and bright surrounding stars. Andrew used: Mount: HEQ5 Pro Software: Starkeeper Voyager Astrophotography Software, Photoshop and DSS Image - 15 x 240sec exp. Gain 100 Offset 70 It was taken from Blanchetown, South Australia under dark, Bottle 2 skies. Thanks for sharing Andrew! 18.01.2022 COMET C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) COMES DOWNUNDER! Well, we were grumpy before but it appears that Comet NEOWISE has finally graced our skies for those with clear enough views to the western horizon. The comet is reportedly dimming and also competing against the Sun and the first quarter moon. Initial observations from Australia report that it’s not quite naked eye. Hopefully this will improve as it moves away from the Sun, but at the very least it should be observed in binoculars... or captured with even a modest lens and camera. As you can see from the pictures, it’s best observed in the direction of the sunset and off to the right, which should make it easy to find. Check out these first shots from Queensland by Scott Van Der Linden and Kevin Parker and get excited! (1) Kevin Parker My first sighting of Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) from Slade Point Queensland, 23rd July. 6 seconds and 10 x 6 seconds unguided with a 135mm lens at F2.5, Pentax K-5. (2) Scott Van Der Linden - "C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) from Mackay in Qld, Australia, 6:48pm 23rd July. Got about an hour of viewing after sunset. Canon 7D, 13s F4, ISO1250."

18.01.2022 Quick note about masks - Followings guidelines from the NSW government, you now *must* wear a facemask while visiting our Sydney retail store. Stay safe everyone!... (And no, we're not selling these astro facemasks. Pretty cool though!) #bintelastronomy #bintel #covid_19 #nsw

09.01.2022 TODAY's WEATHER - ON JUPITER ;) Jupiter has a new storm outbreak in the Northern hemisphere which is causing some excitement for Jupiter fans. The planet is still quite good to image this month, appearing high overhead and still quite large. The storm is best seen in Infrared (IR) and specifically the Methane band however you would need a very sensitive camera to do this. Dr Andy Casely sent us this image of the storm using the ZWO ASI 462MC which is a colour camera, however... IR will actually bypass the RGB colour matrix on the camera, essentially turning it into a monochrome camera which is interesting. The newer CMOS colour cameras are getting quite good at this trick. And if you don’t have a good enough telescope and camera setup to capture something like this don’t worry! Jupiter has another surprise. On the 25th of this month it will appear only a degree or two way from the Moon (3 if you are in WA) during the daytime which means if you’re eyes are up to the challenge, you can see Jupiter in the day. Using binoculars first to find it near the Moon then see if you can spot it with your own eyes. It will look like a small star, except on a blue sky! (Picture not to scale, but as a location reference.) Clear skies, The Bintel Team.

09.01.2022 Astro news! Amazing map of some three million galaxies, many previously unknown, produced by The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and completed in just 300 hours. 09.01.2022 BINTEL customer Scott Cutler used his ZWO ASI 290 planetary camera and an 8" Newtownian reflector to capture this portrait of Jupiter a few months ago. He also used a 5x Barlow lens when he captured 27,000 frames and stacked the best 37% to produce the final result. Scott tells us that condition for imaging from Brisbane weren't too bad and he managed to capture Saturn and Mars as well. Looking forward to seeing those. Thanks for sharing this with us Scott! ... 06.01.2022 The Moon and bold red Mars are close together tonight. This is what it will look like from Sydney about 10pm. No binoculars or telescopes needed to enjoy this! #moon #mars #lunar #bintel #nightsky #spring #universetoday

05.01.2022 A good example of why you need to be careful around telescopes and the Sun. (In this case, the telescope was left outside and the Sun drifted into its field of view. ) #bintel #telescope #sun

03.01.2022 MARS ATTACKS! Well, to be fair Earth started it. We've sent numerous spy satellites and drone robots and now the planet has made a close approach to us and we can see the big meatball pretty clearly right now. Andy Casely has been keeping us up to date with it's growth in apparent size for months and the collage is finally complete! Have you taken any photos of Mars recently? Leave them in the comments!

03.01.2022 Are you trapped at home with a father who you know, deep down, wants to be outside looking at the stars, planets, nebulae and galaxies? Does he steer the conversation to discussions of the cosmos when you’re trying to talk about politics? You probably have an astronomer for a father. So don’t give him socks, or a tie for FATHER'S DAY (Sunday Sep 6th), but a thoughtful space-related gift that shows him you are sort of half-listening when he gets on a roll about telescopes and ...cameras. Here are some gift ideas that are popular to get the brain juices flowing! https://www.bintel.com.au/fathers-day-gift-ideas/ Or if you're worried you'll get the wrong thing, get him a gift card, which is especially good if you'd rather get up or look away from your screen during these socially distant times. https://www.bintel.com.au/product/bintel-gift-voucher/ - The Bintel Team
