25.01.2022 What a tale a feather can tell!

24.01.2022 Win for Shorebirds The City of Cockburn has recently announced changes to dog access on the beaches along the Woodman point coastline. Dogs will no longer be allowed on the beach along the shoreline of the Woodman Point Regional Park south of the ammunition jetty based on data from BirdLife’s Shorebird Monitoring Program. This is a fantastic outcome for shorebirds and will ensure the area continues to provide habitat that is very needed.... Many thanks to all our supporters who put in submissions and thank you so much to the City of Cockburn for a great decision. BirdLife Shorebird Program in WA is supported by the State Natural Resource Management Program WA

15.01.2022 CockyWatch surveys are now on Birdata! With the festive season fast approaching and many people hitting the roads travelling, now is a great time to get involved in CockyWatch surveys! Surveys are easy to do and can be fun for the whole family. What’s more CockyWatch surveys are now available through Birdlife’s Birdata app, making them even easier to complete with no pen and paper or GPS required. These surveys gather valuable information about the abundance of the three sout...hwest Black-Cockatoo species across different habitats and throughout the landscape from year to year. Any time you are going for a drive in the southwest that’s longer than 20km you can do a CockyWatch survey. So if you’re travelling this festive season, why not help our feathered friends at the same time by keeping an eye out for Black-Cockatoos! For more information and instructions go to - https://www.birdlife.org.au//southwest-black-co/cockywatch This survey has been developed in partnership with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and is currently supported by funding from the Alcoa Foundation. 14.01.2022 Great photo from our friends at DBCA. WA Western Ground Parrot Project Coordinator Helena Stokes has just joined the flock at BirdLife WA and we will bring you more news as her project develops.

14.01.2022 PARKS CLOSED DUE TO FIRE DANGER *UPDATE: Some walk trails in Yanchep National Park have been closed until 8am Monday 11 January, due to fire danger. The Gna...ngara and Pinjar off-road vehicle area closure has been extended to 8am Monday 11 January. Hoffman Mill near Dwellingup has also been closed until further notice.* Severe fire weather is predicted across the Perth metropolitan area and surrounds, including the Perth Hills, over the next few days. As a result, we have closed a number of national parks, reserves and recreation areas. These closures will help keep the community safe, and ensure our resources are where they need to be during this period of high bushfire risk. People are urged to avoid closed parks and areas of high bushfire risk, follow the advice of Parks and Wildlife Service staff and observe signage. To keep up to date, visit www.emergency.wa.gov.au.

13.01.2022 PLEASE SHARE! This year the wildlife centres in Perth are seeing a spike in unusual cases of completely naked feldgling red-capped parrots. These birds are not... babies and should be fully feathered and flying by this age. If you find any birds looking like this please take them directly to your local wildlife hospital. Darling Range Wildlife Shelter and some of the other centres are working towards getting some answers as to what is causing this presentation. But we ask everyone to please help by notifying us if you see or find any parrots looking like this so that we can hopefully find out what is causing this. Thanks everyone.

13.01.2022 A very rare event is taking place in City of Cockburn. A family of Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos is nesting, with the chick very close to fledging! I had the pleasure of watching them yesterday with Claire Greenwell, who located the nest and took these pictures. This is unusual, since most red tails nest in forested areas. They are spending more time in Perth now and it seems some are now breeding here. Whether this is good or not is debatable, with chicks having a much higher mortality rate in urban areas. According to WA Museum it is also extremely rare to see the male feed the chick at the nest, so all round this is a very important record.

13.01.2022 Fairy Terns are one of Australia’s smallest and rarest coastal seabirds. During the breeding season, Fairy Terns establish colonies on wide, sandy beaches, sand... spits and salt lakes. Their nest is limited to a simple scrape in the sand (~2-3 cm deep), leaving them highly exposed and vulnerable. Fairy Terns are extremely sensitive to disturbance with human disturbance being one of the major drivers of nest failure. You can make a difference and help to protect Fairy Terns by taking a few simple steps while utilising the coastline. Share the space and be respectful of signage and fencing. These temporary measures are deployed to give the birds a chance of success and they only need the area for a little while. Keep dogs leashed and away from known breeding areas to help protect small chicks that cannot easily escape. When an adult leaves the nest to protect itself, eggs and chicks are exposed, increasing the chance of predation or mortality due to thermal stress. Keep cat indoors or in a cat run. If you see a bird nesting on the beach, report it to local authorities and maintain your distance. Let’s work together to ensure the success of these charismatic, little seabirds. Claire Greenwell

13.01.2022 Birdlife members we hope you have popped this into your calendars so we can all meet up and make new friends and see old ones!

13.01.2022 7000 fish..... ID - have a read!

11.01.2022 A fantastic choice! Like us, our birds live on what #alwayswasalwayswillbe Indigenous land. Using their language names, or incorporating Indigenous languages into common and scientific names, is a small but respectful way to demonstrate the history of custodianship and ongoing connection that First Nations people have to our birds and the places they live. How many Indigenous bird names do you know for your local area? Which do you use everyday? #NAIDOC2020

09.01.2022 Books for you and the family? A great present!

09.01.2022 A big thank you to the 70 plus volunteers who participated in the Spring Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo (FRTBC) count on the 18th October. Forty-five roost sites were surveyed across the Swan Coastal Plain (SCP) and in the Hills, with a total of 648 Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos counted. Similar to previous years, this year’s Spring count total was substantially lower than the totals from recent April Great Cocky Counts, demonstrating a seasonal redistribution of FRTBC away fr...om coastal areas during the winter and spring months. However, of those FRTBCs remaining and counted this spring, a higher proportion were recorded on the SCP, where birds were recorded breeding and feeding on a broad variety of plant species. A full report will be published in the Summer edition of Cocky Notes available from January 2021. This project is supported by the @AlcoaFoundation Photo: Keith Lightbody

09.01.2022 Our friends in the Denmark Bird Group have been working long and hard to see this little patch become a haven for birds. Keeping dogs out of this small area will give migratory shorebirds the ability to recuperate after their marathon journeys and allow resident birds to safely breed. Fantastic work! While the article looks to be trying to stir up controversy, we've got enough coastline that we can surely leave some for the birds to use in peace. What do you say?

09.01.2022 At a time we need stronger nature laws the federal government is trying to weaken them. Thankfully the senate disagreed. What a relief.

02.01.2022 The Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) is one of the most loved and recognisable species of Australian bird. However, to the surprise of many, the Laughi...ng Kookaburra is only native to the Eastern mainland sates of Australia. It is believed that the deserts bordering Western Australia have created an environmental barrier which prevented the Laughing Kookaburra from naturally migrating into the Southwest of WA. Unfortunately, as European settlers spread across Australia, so did other species. In 1897, the Laughing Kookaburra became one of those species, making their way into WA to hopefully control snake populations. The introduction of the species did reach the desired result. However, the bird did not only impact snake species, but many other small invertebrate populations around the Southwest. Such as the Splendid Fairywren (Malurus splendis), Common Garden Skink (lampropholis guichenoti), Motorbike Frog (Litoria moorei). Whilst the Laughing Kookaburra isn’t native to Southwest of WA, populations can only be controlled under certain circumstances. If you are seeing damage from the Laughing Kookaburra on your property you can apply for a license through the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions under damage mitigation (Regulation 29) or dangerous fauna (Regulation 26) by clicking the link below. https://wlc.dbca.wa.gov.au Photo by Greg Close
