24.01.2022 It is Birth Trauma Awareness week and as such Birthsisters would like to announce the commencement of a new program we will be running called "Birth Space". T...his is a program we will be offering to women who have suffered Birth Trauma who feel ready to tell their story, and be heard. This is by invitation only and is a sacred space holding exercise in which solutions and advice are not offered, rather space is held by a group of hand-chosen sisters while one sister speaks her truth in a safe, supported environment. The sister is then offered the opportunity to release or hold on to her story. If you are interested in sharing your story in a safe space, without being given advice or answers, please email us at [email protected]

23.01.2022 Birthsisters has had an adventurous day, Midwife Meg spent 10mins cleaning ice of her widescreen this morning, trying to leave for a birth (it was 0) and then had a massive crack appear across the bottom of her windscreen 20 minutes down the highway (yes it was that cold) we had a "Cow Jam" (rural traffic jam), welcomed a beautiful baby earth side and then managed to turn the mega-pump we use to empty the birth pool into an indoor fountain. Missed Sharnie and Christina, got the floor, kitchen, the roof. And yes, of course, Midwife Meg went home soaking wet. All in a days work. #midwifelife #ruralmidwife

17.01.2022 Some wonderful Phrases from the amazing Mary Cronk - UK Midwife. My personal favorite: I am afraid I will have to regard any further discussion as harassment. This is used if the person does not respect your decision or persists in pressing the subject.' Mary Cronk's Phrasebook Mary Cronk is a very well-known, well-respected midwife in the UK. She is an expert in breech birth and helps to train midwives and medics in this area. Here are some comments from Mary which you mig...ht find helpful, particularly if told that you are "not allowed" to have your baby at home, or you "have to" be induced, etc. etc.. I am sure that many others will explain your absolute right to refuse any procedure for any or no reason. The law and good practice are quite clear. A sensible person will listen carefully to any explanations as to why a procedure is proposed, and then should she choose not to have XY or Z she just says no or no thank you. The "allowing" is done by YOU. An assertive approach is worth cultivating. You may care to commit the following phrases to memory and practice them frequently in front of a mirror. Thank you so much Midwife Sinister/ Mr Hi-an-my-tee, for your advice. We will consider this carefully and let you know our decision. Sweet Smile! This one is most useful in the antenatal stage, though it can be used in labor. It can just take a minute to consider what you either want to know or what you decide. Would you like to reconsider what you have just said! Fierce glare. This is useful and, for example, applies to the misuse of the word "allow". I do not believe you can have heard what I have just said. Shall I repeat myself? I am afraid I will have to regard any further discussion as harassment. This is used if the person does not respect your decision or persists in pressing the subject. What is your NMC or GMC pin number? (In Australia I assume from AHPRA to make a formal complaint against them). This is used if 4 is ineffective. If the person asks why you want their pin number, inform them that this is something they might like to consider. STOP THIS AT ONCE. This to be used in extremis. I am delighted to tell you that this was used AGAINST me by a woman to whom I had taught it. I was doing a difficult VE and was being too persistent. I stopped at once and learned a lesson. Do not argue; learn the phrases and keep them or similar for use if necessary. I am informed that it is usually only necessary to be assertive once or twice to have a much more respectful attitude from the people who are actually your professional SERVANTS. Good Luck And regards Mary ********************************** Home Birth Reference Page www.homebirth.org.uk

13.01.2022 Midwifery is a noisy job. Women scream, partners shout, machines bleep, feet run on the corridors, water splashes, paperwork rustles And the clip clop of a hea...rtbeat punctuates the minutes. We aim for peace but birth is a cacophony of sounds. A melody perhaps. The music of birth. Culminating in the sweetest sound. But sometimes babies slip into this world. Silent and sleeping. Sometimes the room waits chilled. Words unspoken. Hearts barely beating as they wait. For the inevitable silence. Hoping against all hope that a beautiful cry will rend the still air. Instead the silence in broken only by tears and a mother’s lament. Ours is a vocal job. We offer encouragement. Urging, come on push you can do it It will be so worthwhile You'll be so proud. Cheer-leaders, personal trainers, eternal optimists. We hold her hand, guide her way. To a joyful conclusion. But sometimes mothers labour with broken dreams. Our love and care cannot heal their pain. Sometimes we carry the mum to the edge of the abyss, a place we cannot follow and soft words ring hollow. Then midwifery is a painful job. We quietly care. Careful not to intrude but anxious to do what we can. Aware that these precious moments are all they have. A few cuddles, photos, footprints. Robbed of a lifetime of memories we cram in what we can. As heart’s break and sorrow consumes all. A sleeping angel is cradled in shaking arms. And then we leave this place on the longest drive home. With shattered hearts and heavy shoulders. We would take their pain with us if we could. Preterm birth, sepsis, PET, abruption, undiagnosed abnormality, often hidden. And sometimes no reason, no explanation. Unexpected quiet. A light snuffed out without warning. And we return the next day, weary and worn. Questioning ourselves. Questioning our skills. Just questioning why? Why? Then we wipe our eyes, replace our smiles and take a deep breath . Cheerfully we walk into another story, another day. Author of poem: Katherine Mabey Today marks the start of Baby Loss Awareness Week 2020. This week is a special opportunity to remember the lives of babies lost in pregnancy, or soon after birth. A cause extremely close to my heart both professionally and personally; I’ll be posting regularly throughout this week to mark such an important and devastating subject

12.01.2022 NAIDOC week. Always Was Always Will Be. With the deepest respect and love and with the family’s blessings, we share these images of Teisha and her family,... Birthing on Country....Yuin Country. Words can’t describe the profound honour it was for Midwife Jo and Jerusha Sutton Doula Photographer to attend as midwife and photographer/videographer, along with beautiful second midwife Louise David Private Midwife & Homebirth Services. As so eloquently written in the joint Birthing on Country position statement - Respecting individual choice is central to the BoC model. The identification of ‘risk factors’ is viewed through a cultural lens inclusive of the individual woman’s needs and cultural birthing practices, which enriches and informs their choices, assessment and planned care. YOU DID IT TEISHA, may this just be the beginning. Teisha’s words.... Birthing on Country and what a glorious day it was. BoC is the way our woman have always given birth to her child, on the lands of ancestors, ensuring a spiritual connection to the land for her baby. Yesterday we birthed our baby son Nullah Rungatahi Mulligamiriyara Toi out on country where my songlines sing many songs of the past, present and future, where the fresh water meets the salt water and the mountains meet the ocean. HAPPY NAIDOC WEEK MY PEOPLE MY PEOPLE . In our family we celebrate who we are and where we came from every single second of every day. Thank you to our private midwives who were also part of this amazing experience. #birthingoncountry #yuincountry #yuinbaby #wiradjuribaby #itstime #birthtime

11.01.2022 *Trigger warning: obstetric violence* Did you feel mistreated during your maternity care? You are not alone AND There is an actual huge body of evidence that de...monstrates that maternity care around the world has the capacity to and IS using abusive, disrespectful and neglectful behaviours when caring for women in childbirth. This is a global problem... In this research by Bohren et al in 2015 they synthesised the findings of 65 studies from 34 countries and found that 7 domains of mistreatment were imposed upon women in childbirth 1. Physical abuse 2. Sexual abuse 3. Verbal abuse 4. Stigma and discrimination 5. Failure to meet professional standards of care 6. Poor rapport between women and providers 7. Health system conditions and constraints The authors concluded: this systematic review presents a comprehensive, evidence-based typology of the mistreatment of women during childbirth in health facilities and demonstrates that mistreatment can occur at the level of interaction between the woman and provider, as well as through systematic failures at the health facility and health system levels ... the study is called: The mistreatment of women during childbirth in health facilities globally: a mixed methods systematic review See more

10.01.2022 I am at a loss of words right now. I was nursing Ev in the dolphin dome at the zoo today because the nursing room was closed. As we were all chilling and hangin...g out...THIS HAPPENS! There is so much about these pictures. One being how amazing, gentle, && loving dolphins are! They are truly amazing creatures. Another, like how flipping cool is this?!?!?! Its like they sensed && knew what was going on. Oh, and the fact that my Aunt Brandis favorite animal in the world (obsession) was dolphins. As you can see on my face, it was a lot to take in. The zoo keeper even said they have never seen anything like this. UPDATE TO ADD: the dolphin on the left picture is a nursing momma right now too!

07.01.2022 This is one of those Copy and paste if you were in this Generation things. I find these highly offensive and overly simplistic - often coming from a place of PRIVILEGE. So I added to this one- to make it more realistic to the childhoods I have seen, and lived. Lets be honest about life and not make domestic violence, addiction, poverty, child abuse and neglect appear like a generational issue - they know no bounds. Kids who had, or are having, terrible childhoods, often ...Continue reading

06.01.2022 ATTENTION: After a very tough business year with Council hassles for the first 6 months inhibiting my ability to open the doors to having to close them literally the week I opened due to Covid 19 restrictions, to limited trading for the rest of the time, bar a short window, I can no longer financially maintain the clinic. As such, I am absolutely heartbroken to announce that I am no longer able to keep the doors open at Birthsisters Family Hub and will be permanently closing ...the doors as of January the 7th 2021. I will continue to offer Homebirth services and provide private Antenatal and Postnatal Care, as well as continuing to support women and birthing families in any way that I possibly can. My passion for caring, advocating and fighting for birthing women remains <3 A huge thank you to all who did utilise the service, purchased from our shop and attended our classes. During this time, can I please ask for some time to allow myself to heal and grieve this loss. Huge love to all, Midwife Meg

05.01.2022 CONCLUSION: "the evidence presented in this article DOES NOT show that women who are making the decision to continue their pregnancy beyond 42 weeks are encountering increased risk of stillbirth. It also shows that the rate of perinatal mortality is lowest at 42+ weeks". https://www.aims.org.uk/journal/item/induction-at-term

04.01.2022 Homebirth isnt homebirth at all costs. And homebirth is not necessarily about the place of birth. Jodie and Tim planned a homebirth for their first baby... supported by Midwife Jo and myself. Jodie (a midwife herself) wanted above all to give birth in a safe environment avoiding any unnecessary intervention. Her labour was long and tough. She had utilised a TENS machine, the shower, the pool, heat packs, long walks with stairs, rebozo- we tried it all. Jodies back went into a crippling spasm in the shower whilst in established labour causing not only intense pain, but a sense of overriding anxiety. Many, many hours into labour, Jodie made the decision to go to hospital for pain relief. We had worked together at home as a team and we went to hospital as a team. We were greeted warmly and welcomed with kindness. Jodie had an epidural and got immediate relief. We dozed, we laughed, her labour continued to progress. And then, when it came time for her to push out her baby the beautiful hospital midwife handed Jo a pair of gloves and said- Youre her midwife. You should catch her baby. This is collaboration at its finest- something so small which is actually so significant- maintaining the continuity. Jodie pushed her baby girl out like a champion, right into Jos hands who placed her baby on her chest. Jodie came out of this birth wishing her labour wasnt so long and gruelling, but not wishing that she had made different choices in the labour she did have. Even though she didnt give birth at home, she did all the hard work in the place she felt most comfortable. Everyone knows birth doesnt always go to plan. And this is where the importance of care comes in- to have continuity of care with a midwife (and a doula, in this case), where you have explored every option, made decisions that were respected and supported and all of your caregivers worked together- is a great leap in the psychological and emotional recovery from a birth that didnt go the way you hoped and planned for. Homebirth is one of the only places in this country you can access true, one to one midwifery care. Its about so much more than the place of birth. #birthphotographer #sydneybirthphotographer #homebirth #hospitalbirth #birthphotography #labour #midwife #doula

01.01.2022 Funny Fridays...

01.01.2022 Disgraceful reporting, fraudulent use of statistics, and fear-mongering at its absolute best! This article is appalling and NOT accurate. Spontaneous vaginal birth IS NOT DANGEROUS. Do not let the patriarchy feed you this sort of utter crap without a fight sisters!
