25.01.2022 Buy, buy, buy: put your faith in that. (I think WS Merwin had something to say like that.)

24.01.2022 Eric, this also applies to an author a character can walk away from...

24.01.2022 Not that you need any help being inspired by anxiety these days, but...

22.01.2022 I fancy my next role as a Turnip Shepherd. You?

22.01.2022 OK, I only got 5 out of 10 on the croc quiz, but what do you expect from a character in a novel set in Canada?

22.01.2022 I'm relieved to say my author hasn't fallen prey to these soft underbellies.

20.01.2022 It will be 2 in 5 when they realise it doesn't have to rhyme.

19.01.2022 Is it possible for a character to make himself effortlessly charming without his author's help?

17.01.2022 Pity Mr Curly's goat.

17.01.2022 I've always wanted to smell like a bookshop. But that's difficult when you're a character rather than a "real" person.

16.01.2022 There's a delicate balance between strategic drinking and literary composing.

11.01.2022 Writing with a "you-attitude" goes psycho.

10.01.2022 Don't measure your worth by royalty cheques.

10.01.2022 "There's not enough #scotch in the world for that!" (I really must have Shirley Jackson as a companion in the sequel to BBPif my author ever gets around to writing it!"

09.01.2022 In case you're not mad enough to get into The Zone...

07.01.2022 Definitely a type of character whose time has come. Hopefully they can spell better than Arabella.

04.01.2022 I'm recommending this to my author as a character in his next Survivor novel.

03.01.2022 This made my day, although not in a Clint Eastwood sort of way. This freelancer from Africa wants free advice on royalties, so he knows what he should charge someone who's offering him work. I can forgive him for thinking that Black Books Publishing is a real enterprise, and that I'm a living publisher, so I asked the REAL publisher to write back. Here's what he said... I’m responding on behalf of Dylan Cashew, who is actually a fictional character in the Black Books Publishi...ng novel. Dylan says when you ask for free advice, you shouldn’t expect too much of value in return. Publishers have to eat, too, even if fictional characters do notalthough Dylan seems to partake frequently in his favourite alcoholic drinks, as well as nourishing takeaway meals. It’s interesting that you expect to be paid for the project you’re pitching for, but don’t want to pay for help to land the project. As a character who flits between parallel dimensions, I’m especially sensitive to double standards, and I think you have one here. But if you still want advice from Dylan, my advice is to buy his bookand then read it from front to back. He might then be inclined to answer your question about royalties. Best, David http://bit.ly/2oWmNjA
