21.01.2022 Need a drink? Choose tap water! Drinking tap water is a great, inexpensive way to stay hydrated and have a healthy smile! Choose tap water over sugary drinks when you’re thirsty. Sugary drinks can cause tooth decay, contribute to weight gain and obesity, and increase your risk of type 2 diabetes, 13 types of cancer, heart disease and other health problems. The World Health Organization recommends consuming no more than seven teaspoons of added sugar per day (27.5g or 5% of ...total energy intake) to greatly reduce your risk of tooth decay, obesity and other chronic diseases. Need a check-up? Please call our Blackburn Clinic Dental Centre on 03 9878 1597, we'll be more than happy to see you.
21.01.2022 Teeth Whitening As the name suggests, this treatment is all about lightening stained or discoloured teeth. While you can buy over-the-counter, use-at-home toothpastes and strips, your dentist is best qualified to determine if you need teeth whitening. They can diagnose the reason for the discolouration and its type, and can then advise the most effective treatment for you.... You may be tempted to go to a shopping centre booth or a beautician to get your teeth whitened, but neither are staffed by suitably qualified personnel. Incorrect use of bleaching agents may cause irreversible damage to your teeth and gums. DIY bleaching comes with all sorts of risks, and anecdotal treatments such as rubbing strawberries, lemons, or even bicarbonate of soda on your teeth, can do a lot of damage to your teeth and gums for no real whitening gain. Keep in mind is that crowns, veneers and fillings don’t change colour when you have your teeth whitened. If you’re interested in teeth whitening please call our Blackburn Clinic Dental Centre on 03 9878 1597 today.
17.01.2022 Do you know how much sugar you're consuming in your favorite soft drinks?
11.01.2022 We have taken a number of steps to help protect our staff and patients during this outbreak, some of which include: We have implemented a daily health screening check point and log for all employees entering the workplace. Our staff pay special attention to their own symptoms and stay home if they present with symptoms of COVID-19. We request that the patient limit the number of visitors accompanying him or her to the dental appointment to only those people who are necess...ary. We advise patients that they, and anyone accompanying them to the appointment, will be requested to wear a cloth face covering or facemask when entering the facility and will undergo screening for fever and symptoms consistent with COVID-19. We telephone triage all patients in need of dental care. Assess the patient’s dental condition and determine whether the patient needs to be seen in the dental setting. We have provided supplies for respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette, including alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) with at least 60% alcohol and tissues. We have removed toys, magazines, and other frequently touched objects from our waiting room that cannot be regularly cleaned and disinfected. There are clear signs at the front door to alert people who have either travelled overseas, had cold or flu symptoms or come in to contact with anyone that has had COVID-19 not to enter the building, and to call us for instructions. We adhere to strict environmental cleaning and disinfection procedures consistently and correctly after each patient. These are just a few of the many steps our practice has undertaken to ensure we are operating as safety as possible for staff and patients. Please call our clinic if you have any questions.
10.01.2022 The benefits of Dental Crowns: A crown that fits correctly over your tooth can last for many years, even for decades. A dental crown covers the tooth over which it is placed (think of it as a cap for your tooth), so it protects the tooth against tooth decay. A crown can cover up a stained or unusually shaped tooth, adding to your self-confidence and giving you a nicer smile. A crown can keep a cracked tooth together and prevent or delay having to have a tooth extracte...d by your dentist. If you are unsure about whether getting a dental crown is a good idea for you, talk with your dentist at Blackburn Clinic Dental Centre today.
09.01.2022 How to Care for a Chipped or Broken Tooth If your tooth is broken, chipped, or fractured, you need to see your dentist as soon as possible. Otherwise, your tooth could be damaged further or become infected, possibly causing you to end up losing the tooth. In the meantime, try the following self-care measures: Rinse your mouth out with warm water or saltwater.... Apply a cold compress to the cheek near the broken tooth. Apply gauze to the broken tooth to help soak up the bleeding. If gauze isn’t readily available, a wet tea bag can be used as a substitute. Note, bleeding should subside after 10 minutes. If you’ve experienced a severe break, you need to see a dentist within 24 hours. If you aren’t able to make it to a dentist immediately, head to a local pharmacy for dental cement. It can be used as a quick fix until you seek medical attention. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever to help with the discomfort. Please call us on 03 9878 1597 immediately and provide as much detail as possible about your condition.
09.01.2022 Dementia & Oral Health Dementia can affect a person’s daily activities, changing the types of foods they prefer and their ability to care for their teeth. The level of assistance or care required at home varies depending on the severity or progression of dementia. If caring for someone with dementia, in addition to increasing remineralising products and hydration, and monitoring and reducing sugar, it may be helpful to: Help with oral hygiene: Remind the person directly, crea...te a daily reminder chart or assist them with their oral hygiene. Look for changes: Look for changes inside the mouth or changes in behaviour, such as avoiding eating or holding the face. These can be signs of pain or discomfort. Have a printed medical summary: It may not always be possible to go to appointments with an older friend or relative. Help them by typing and printing a list of medical conditions, allergies and medications. For more information on oral health please call our Blackburn Clinic Dental Centre on 03 9878 1597.
07.01.2022 Teeth straightening Using corrective items like braces and plates, your dentist or orthodontist (specialist) will line up your teeth within your jaw so you not only look better but may have more efficient use of the affected teeth. Once considered unsightly, braces, a key part of teeth straightening, are now much less noticeable than they were, in some cases being all but invisible. If you have crooked teeth and are looking to do something about it, call our Blackburn Clinic Dental Centre on 03 9878 1597 today.
01.01.2022 AGEING AND ORAL HEALTH Arthritis is a common condition that may occur with ageing and affect people’s ability to care for their own teeth. Inflammation and stiffness in the joints, such as the shoulder or wrist, can make brushing and flossing teeth a painful or difficult task. This can be reduced by:... - Using a flossing handle, which eliminates the need to hold thin floss around fingers - Adapting toothbrush or flossing handles to make them easier to grip, such as adding a bicycle hand grip - Using an electric toothbrush, which reduces the movement required in the wrist and has a thicker handle. In more severe cases, a carer may need to assist with, or carry out, cleaning of teeth or dentures. Please call our Blackburn Clinic Dental Centre on 03 9878 1597 for more information.
