21.01.2022 Ok, this book, good lord, let me tell you about this book a customer for whom I would search for books to the end of the earth, asked if I could get this book for him: Koji for Life by Nakaji. I blithely said yes then went about tracking it down. Now this is just post covid I might add, so what may have been a challenging hunt became even more wildly circuitous. First I tried my usual Australian suppliers, of which I have many, then my international suppliers, again, I have ...many, nothing. Then I went the internet route of book buying; amazon etc no luck, I went to his website and had to ring my sister @imi_oliver who reads Japanese to get in contact with Nakaji himself, I started reaching out to bookshops in New York and London that specialised in food books, They couldn’t get it either! Almost at the end of my tether but not willing to submit I was almost about to close the shop one day when a lovely group of friends came in and sat down for coffee. As I was sitting, furrowed brow at my computer pointing my google lens translator at my screen in order to open an account with Japanese Amazon my ears pricked up, did I hear some Japanese being spoken?!? And this is when I met the wonderful Yumemi who I promptly enlisted to help me with the Japanese Amazon. After we, or she, found out Japanese Amazon doesn’t seem to ship out of Japan she amazingly offered to get her MOTHER to pick it up for me IN JAPAN! and then send it to me, so I could give it to you dear customer!!!! So, that’s the story. I have since discovered that Yumemi is a rather extraordinary Artist, you can find her work at @yumemihiraki Thank you Yumemi! You are my hero! 14.01.2022 Hello All! It’s been a year since we opened Black Swan! Really?! Yes! Thank you all for your very special love and support. It’s been a very exciting process, closing Badgers Bike Cafe, building the bookshelves, stocking them with the best possible books I can find. Inviting you all back in! Making something special and meaningful. It certainly feels like a worthwhile project. Life is short and one hopes to spend ones days making people smile, and smiling oneself. Having good... conversations. Sometimes it’s too busy for that but we usually get a few words in! I’m so thankful to have Dallas, Sarah, Kitty and Badger. What a team! And equally important, I couldn’t have done it without YOU!! Naively starting my own business has really opened my eyes to how all those little shops you pass by in your town actually work... or don’t. You literally pay our wage, it should be obvious but I’ve so often been an employee where you are paid regardless of the fluctuations of the business. Or a customer, where you don’t have to think about it at all! So to see behind the curtains is an eye opener! LOTS of hard work! But I love it! And, now that I have got through the bulk of the set up stage you’re now literally paying for a wider selection of books! And.... hopefully next year if Christmas goes well you will literally be paying for our plans to double the size of the building creating an even better bookshop experience. 08.01.2022 Black Swan is closed today for the funeral of Layton Hodgetts. The kindest of men. All are welcome to the procession on High Street from Memorial Hall to Arthur Square at midday and the service screened in Arthur Square at 1pm. He was an excellent and energetic grandfather, a loving father and husband and exemplary and inspiring father-in-law. I miss his presence sorely.
