24.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - ROTTWEILER The Rottweiler - also commonly known as a Rottie - is a loyal, courageous and smart dog breed who is known for its unwavering devotion to its owners. Rottweilers are famous for their large, muscular build and unique coat colours. Originally bred as herding dogs, the Rottweiler is now used as a guide dog, guard dog, police dog, and search and rescue dog.... As they are big, active dogs, the Rottweiler needs at least one walk per day. They are therefore suited to individuals and families who are equally as active and who have enough time to give their dog an adequate amount of exercise. Though clownish and playful around family and friends, Rottweilers are protective of their territory and are very wary of strangers until introduced. As with all dog breeds, the Rottweiler needs to be trained and socialised with people and animals from a young age.
24.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT CAT BREEDS - SIAMESE Siamese Cats are highly intelligent, talkative and sociable. They have a deep, loud voice and enjoy chatting with their owners. They are often described as being dog-like in their fondness for playing fetch and capacity for affection. Siamese Cats are smart and sporty and need lots of toys and playtime to keep their body and mind occupied. Never leave one by itself with nothing to play with, or it will find creative ways to wreak hav...oc. These entertaining cats love to be the centre of attention, and since they love to be around their family, they do not do well when left alone. Busy families who spend much of the day at work or school are recommended to only get a Siamese if there is another pet to keep it company. The Siamese coat is quite unique, with a light-coloured body with a darker face, paws, ears and tail. Its fur is short, soft, and silky. The most common colours are seal, blue, chocolate and lilac, though some associations accept other colours, such as red, cream, fawn, caramel, apricot and cinnamon. Their eyes are large, almond-shaped and blue. They have a long, muscular body, a long neck, and long, lean legs with small, oval-shaped feet and a long, thin, whip-like tail.
24.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - DOBERMAN PINSCHERS Doberman Pinschers are a powerful and energetic dog that needs plenty of exercise. If not exercised regularly they are likely to become irritable. They are considered people-oriented dogs that are affectionate and sweet if socialised and trained properly from an early age. They are loyal to their owners and are good with children when raised with them.... The Doberman needs plenty of mental challenges to keep them from becoming bored. They also need a strong owner who can take the time to properly socialise and train them and keep them busy every day. This may be too much for people who lead a more laid-back lifestyle. The well-bred Doberman is a wonderful family dog. He is trustworthy and protective of the children in their family, as long as theyve been socialised and trained appropriately. Children must be respectful and kind to the Doberman and the pup will be just that in return. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party.
23.01.2022 PET SPOTLIGHT - GUINEA PIG HEALTH Definitely rocking some spunky hairdo's, guinea pigs make cute, easy to care for pocket pets. A large enclosure with grass and hiding spots, other companion guinea pigs, and fresh food and water daily, will keep them happy. Keep them indoors in a cooler area such as laundry or garage over the coming summer months as they tend to get heat stress at temperatures above 30 degrees.... Most of the common health problems in guinea pigs can be prevented by healthy eating and good care. You should regularly check your guinea pig to ensure he/she is eating well, urinating, defecating normal droppings and walking around easily. Also check your guinea pig has a healthy coat, clear bright eyes, a nose free of any discharges, normal length nails (that are not too long) and normal healthy footpads. Dental disease is very common in guinea pigs, often due to a lack of roughage that guinea pig chew and wear down their teeth which are constantly growing. They need to chew on fibrous material for long periods throughout the day to wear down their teeth. Dental disease causes severe pain and discomfort to the guinea pig and is best prevented by feeding an appropriate diet. Ensure that your guinea pigs have a constant supply of grass and/or grass hay (such as Timothy, Oaten, Barley, or grassy hay). Guinea pigs should not be fed Lucerne (alfalfa) or Clover hay, as these are too high in protein and calcium. Offer a variety of fresh leafy green vegetables & herbs daily. Vitamin C rich foods such as leafy green veggies and capsicums (green, orange, and red) should be fed to your guinea pigs daily. Foods like carrots, kiwifruit, berries, and pineapple are also great as a source of Vitamin C and a tasty treat for your guinea pigs but only feed them a few times a week, not every day, as these foods have quite a high sugar content. We hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about caring for your guinea pig, for more information visit the RSPCA knowledge Base. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE PHOTOS OF YOUR CUTIES BY POSTING IN THE COMMENTS!! WE WANT TO SEE THOSE CRAZY HAIRDOS!! (Source: RSPCA Knowledge Base, rspca.org.au)
23.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - AMERICAN STAFFORDSHIRE TERRIER The American Staffordshire Terrier is a muscular breed of dog known for being very strong and energetic. They enjoy going out for a jog, playing in the yard, or cuddling up on the couch. They are intelligent and eager to please which makes them highly trainable. Their intelligence also means they need constant mental stimulation and if they dont get it, they will put those strong jaws to use and chew anything out... of boredom. The American Staffordshire can also use their strength to pull dog walkers along with ease wherever they want to go if they arent trained properly. This means they need a strong, confident owner who will set boundaries without being overly harsh. Socialisation is also extremely important to help the breed overcome its natural standoffish tendencies when it comes to other animals. American Staffordshire Terriers are known for being loving family dogs, even with children however they would be better suited to homes with kids over the age of six. This breed is very muscular and can play rough, which might result in injuries. Even with properly trained dogs of any breed, play time with children should always be supervised. American Staffordshire Terriers are not generally fond of other dogs. Meeting other dogs in public can be a hit-or-miss situation with each individual dog. Additionally, American Staffordshire Terriers may see other pets like cats as prey. Early socialisation and growing up with other animals can reduce the American Staffordshires tendencies to not get along well with other pets, but they may be best suited to one pet households.
22.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - DALMATIAN The Dalmatian is a medium-sized, muscular dog known for its distinctive black-and-white spotted coat. Dalmatians are incredibly energetic dogs and need to be taken on a long, brisk walk or jog every day. Large, safe living areas and backyards are also recommended, since bored, inactive Dalmatians can become destructive. ... Dalmatians are incredibly playful and happy dogs with barrels full of energy. If they dont receive adequate mental and physical stimulation, they can become highly strung, develop behavioural issues and may become timid without enough socialisation. With a firm and consistent owner, the Dalmatian can be very obedient and trainable, and they have above average levels of intelligence. Because of its boisterous and energetic nature, the Dalmatian is not recommended for families with very young children. The Dalmatian does best with an owner who is just as energetic as it is. They have a short, fine, smooth yet dense coat which sheds a considerable amount all through the year. Weekly grooming with a mitt is recommended to minimise shedding and remove dead hair.

20.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - BICHON FRISE The Bichon Frise is a small dog famous for its curly, fluffy white coat. Bichon Frise puppies are highly trainable, obedient and intelligent, though housebreaking can occasionally be a difficult task. Training and socialising should begin from a young age. Their origin as performers is quite obvious in the Bichons temperament they are famous for being entertaining and love being the centre of attention.... They are happiest when they are with their family, but they are naturally sociable and tend to get along well with everyone. They are great companions for families with young children, the elderly, and households with other pets. Make sure any young children are told to be careful however because their fluffy toy-like appearance can lead younger kids to play rough with them as if they were a stuffed toy. It is important that owners do not allow the dog to do things they wouldnt allow a larger dog to do (such as jumping up on people and furniture), as this can lead to dominant behaviour where the dog believes it the leader. The Bichon Frise requires a daily walk in order to give it the mental and physical stimulation it requires. Like all dogs, if its needs are not met, the Bichon can become anxious and develop serious behavioural problems. Bichons also need a safe, enclosed indoor or outdoor space in which they can play and use up their energy. Despite their independent spirit, Bichons thrive on human company and their temperaments are very affectionate, lively and intelligent. They are charming and gentle and are not known to be barkers.

19.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - GERMAN SHEPHERDS German Shepherds are built for action. This means they have a lot of energy that they need to burn off with daily exercise. This highly intelligent and trainable breed thrives on having a job to do. The German Shepherd can be trained to do almost anything, from alerting a deaf person to a doorbell ring or sniffing out victims as a result of a natural disaster.... When well-trained and have plenty of exposure to kids, especially as a puppy, a German Shepherd is a great companion for children. In fact, some say they are a cross between a babysitter and a police officer, both gentle with, and protective of, the children in their family. This is a big dog and although capable of mistakenly bumping a toddler or small child, they are true to their reserved nature. The German Shepherd can also live peacefully with other dogs and pets, as long as theyre taught to do so from a puppy. Introducing an adult German Shepherd to a household with other pets can be more difficult if the dog isnt used to getting along with other dogs or cats.

19.01.2022 DO YOU HAVE TIME FOR A PET? Dogs and cats require a lot your time and attention. Feeding, training, exercising, playing it all adds up to a big commitment.... Most pet owners will tell you it is 100% worth the time and the money because your dog or your cat will be the most loyal, most comforting, most appreciative best friend you could ever wish for. Consider which pet is right for you. Cats and dogs have unique needs and every pet will have different requirements depending on his or her activity level, intelligence, and personality. Research information online, speak to other pet owners, and ask a veterinarian! Before you bring a pet into your home talk to the people you live with. Who will walk your dog? Who will feed your cat? If you live alone speak to your friends and family and ask them whether you can count on their support if you are unable to temporarily (or permanently) care for your pet. Be an informed buyer. Whether you are adopting a forever friend from an animal shelter or a recognised breeder, you need to do your research so that you can be sure your new pet is right for you.

They excel in various canine sports, including obedience, flyball, agility, tracking, and flying disc competitions. They make great family companions as long as they get a lot of physical and mental exercise. You also need to be comfortable with a dog who can outsmart you from time to time. ... If you want a loving, brainy dog who will keep you active and on your toes, this may be the breed for you! The Border Collie will herd anything that moves, including children, cars, people on bikes and cats. The noisy play of young children can stimulate the Border Collies herding instinct and cause him to nip, nudge, and bark. Regardless of the environment, a Border Collie requires a great deal of mental and physical stimulation every day, and he needs an owner who is willing and able to provide that. This can be a great burden to owners who dont know what they are getting into. If youre considering a Border Collie, make sure you can provide him with a proper outlet for his natural energy and bright mind. The Border Collie is a good family dog, as long as he is raised properly and receives training when hes young. He gets along with children and other pets, though his instinct to herd may cause him to nip, chase, and bark at kids (especially very young children) and animals if his herding instincts arent otherwise directed.

13.01.2022 Why is it important to ensure my pet is microchipped? It is very important to ensure your pet cat or dog is microchipped because if your pet cat or dog becomes lost, you are far more likely to be reunited if they are microchipped. A microchip is a permanent method of electronic identification. The chip itself is very small about the size of a grain of rice and is implanted just under the skin between the shoulder blades at the back of your pets neck.... Each chip has a unique number that is detected using a microchip scanner. The microchip number is recorded on a microchip database registry with details about the animal and owner. Pet owners need to ensure their contact details are recorded on the database against their pets microchip number. Should your pet wander or become lost, vets, animal shelters and local councils can scan your pet for a microchip and contact you via the database. It is very important to keep your contact details up to date on the database so that if you move house or change your phone number you will still be contactable in the event of your pet becoming lost/straying. If a pet is transferred to a new owner, the new owner must ensure their contact details are recorded on the database. https://www.petregistry.nsw.gov.au

13.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - AUSTRALIAN BULLDOG Australian Bulldogs are very people-orientated and crave human attention at all times. The breed is highly affectionate and especially good with children, protective and enthusiastic. Because the Australian Bulldog requires so much attention it is best suited to a family environment where there will be some contact throughout the day. Separation anxiety is common in the breed if they are left alone for an extended period of ti...me. Because the Australian Bulldog is a stubborn and persistent animal, training can be a chore but only if the owner doesnt commit to a regime with patience and consistency. Commencing training when the Bulldog is a puppy is a must. Australian Bulldogs are very loyal animals and are keen to please their owners. Firm and consistent discipline is important. Australian Bulldogs are not overly energetic but are enthusiastic at play time and should be exercised at least once a day. Although bred to deal better with harsh Australian conditions, they are best suited to living indoors as they can feel the heat, especially in summer.
12.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - CHIHUAHUA Chihuahuas love nothing more than being with people and require a minimum of grooming and exercise. They make excellent apartment dogs who get along with the whole family. Just make sure any children who approach know how to play gently with a small dog. Chihuahuas can have long or short coats. The two coat varieties of the Chihuahua have slightly different grooming needs. The smooth-coat Chihuahua will need only occasional brushing a...nd regular baths to look dapper, while the long haired variety should have his coat brushed at least once a week to avoid any tangles or mats. A Chihuahua should get around 20 to 30 minutes of exercise each day. The Chihuahua loves to run and play and can usually get enough exercise in a very small space, meaning they are well suited for owners who do not have fenced yards. They should be taken on a daily walk and allowed to roam in an enclosed indoor or outdoor spaces. Simply walking around following their owner is usually enough exercise for this happy breed. Short, slow walks will keep your dog in good weight and condition. Avoid overexerting the Chihuahua. If your dog is panting and working hard to keep up, its time to pick him up and carry him home. If their exercise needs are not satisfied, the dog may become anxious, neurotic, and develop a number of other behavioural problems. Chihuahuas are not recommended for homes with children under the age of eight, simply because of the chance of injury by a young child due to their tiny size. This breed often bonds to a single person, however are willing to make friends with new people if properly introduced.

11.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - GREYHOUNDS The Greyhound combines a stately appearance with a friendly attitude toward people and other dogs. Loyal and affectionate with his family, hes not aggressive toward strangers, although he will let you know through a bark or a subtle pricking of his small, folded ears that someone is approaching your home. Greyhounds have a reputation for having high energy levels, but in reality their favourite pastime is sleeping. They will be satisf...ied with a daily walk and active people find they make good jogging or running partners. Although many believe that this breed is made to run and has the destructive energy to go with it, that couldnt be further from the truth. Greyhounds are generally docile and quiet, and theyre world-class nappers. They do well in apartments and homes with small yards because of their low indoor energy. Greyhounds can be patient with children and have been known to step delicately around toddlers, but they do best in homes with older children who know how to act around dogs.

08.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - BOXER The Boxer is a medium-sized domesticated dog with a very muscular and stocky build, short shiny coat and a long powerful tail. Boxers are very loyal and affectionate dogs, especially with their family members. They are highly energetic and enthusiastic when it comes to exercise. The breed will require a good deal of physical stimulation such as a good long walk at least daily.... Boxers also love to play. The breed is very partial to ball games and fetch and requires a generous amount of play time to avoid boredom. If the dog is left to its own devices for any extended period of time, behavioural problems may arise. It is not uncommon for Boxer owners to come home to their garden dug up or a pair of shoes ripped to pieces. Although very people-orientated and generally very good with children, the breed is known for being head-strong at times. Its stubbornness must be treated with early obedience training.
07.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - PUG The Pug is a small breed of dog known for its wrinkly face and curly tail. Pugs have square, compact bodies with deep chests and well-formed muscles. Their coat is short and glossy, and most often is fawn-coloured, but they can come in apricot fawn, silver fawn, and black. Their coats are quite easy to groom with a firm bristle brush and only need to be bathed when necessary. They should be dried immediately though as they are sensitive to ...temperature. Their facial creases need to be cleaned frequently. The Pug has a tail which curls over the hip, very strong legs and ankles and small feet. Its lower teeth often rest further forward than the upper which means that most Pugs have under bites. Pugs are well-suited to many types of owners, including elderly people and families with young children. Though strong-willed, Pugs are very rarely aggressive and are very fond of children and get along well with other pets. They can be quiet and placid but also playful and lively. They are quite lazy in nature and tend to enjoy napping, which can make them a great low-maintenance companion for elderly people. They are very loyal, affectionate and loving towards their owners and often follow them wherever they go. They tend to have rather poor road sense, so it is imperative that they are kept indoors or in an enclosed outdoor space. Even though they are a relatively inactive breed, they can be prone to overeating and so should still be taken on daily walks.

05.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - BEAGLE Small, compact, and hardy, Beagles are active companions for kids and adults alike. Canines of this dog breed are merry and fun loving, but being hounds, they can also be stubborn and require patient, creative training techniques. Their noses guide them through life, and they are never happier than when following an interesting scent. ... Like every dog, the Beagle needs early socialisation and exposure to many different people, sights, sounds, and experiences. Socialisation also helps ensure that your Beagle puppy grows up to be a well adjusted dog. A fenced backyard is a necessity with a scent hound such as a Beagle. When outside, your Beagle needs to be on lead in unconfined areas, or securely confined and supervised. Hes a wanderer by nature, so in case he escapes ensure you need to ensure he is microchipped and wearing identification tags on his collar so he can be returned to you. Beagles bond with everyone in the family, especially children. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and supervise any interactions. Teach your child never to approach any dog while hes eating or sleeping or to try to take the dogs food away. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child. Beagles enjoy company and dont like to be left alone. Another dog or even a cat will help meet their companionship needs.

05.01.2022 Can pet microchips track a lost pet? Microchips are tiny implants about the size of a grain of rice that are placed under your cat or dog’s skin. The microchip contains a unique 15 digit identification number that becomes your pet’s permanent ID. Once the chip has been implanted in your pet, it will link your contact information to your pet. A microchip implant is an integrated circuit or chip placed under the skin of an animal. The chip, about the size of a large grain of ...rice, uses passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, and is also known as a PIT (passive integrated transponder) tag. Standard pet microchips are typically 11 mm long (approximately 12 inch) and 2 mm in diameter. Microchips can: - Be scanned by any person or authority with a microchip scanner in order to find linked details regarding the pets ownership - Be implanted in almost all kinds of animals - Microchips take seconds to implant and last a lifetime without requiring replacement Microchips do not: -Microchips do not have any tracking capabilities like GPS -Microchips do not need batteries -Micro chips do not need to be replaced once implanted -Micro chips do not cause the animal any discomfort or suffering Make sure you can be contacted if your pet goes missing by logging onto the NSW Registry and updating your address and contact details. 02.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - AUSTRALIAN CATTLE DOG The Australian Cattle Dog is an extremely intelligent, active, and sturdy dog breed and are used mainly as a herding dog. The Australian Cattle Dog needs constant mental and physical activity. If hes bored or lonely, he can be destructive. Hes apt to chew and tear up items he shouldnt. If you choose to live with an Australian Cattle Dog, be prepared to keep him busy and tired. If hes tired, hes less likely to get himse...lf into trouble. Because the Australian Cattle Dog was bred to herd they cam be a mouthy dog. Their instinct is to nip cattle, children, pets, cars, anything that moves. They have a strong tendency to bite, even in play. This tendency must be properly directed with socialisation and proper training. There is a toughness about the Australian Cattle Dog. They have to be tough to handle the high temperatures, rough terrain, and long distances involved when working on farms and in the outback.
02.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - CAVOODLE The Cavoodle is a cross breed of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Miniature Poodle. Cavoodles have soft, Poodle-like coats which tend to shed a small amount since Poodles do not shed but Cavaliers do. The Cavoodle comes in a variety of colours, including black, white, chestnut/white, black/white/tan, gold, red, ruby and apricot.... The Cavoodle temperament combines the best traits from the Cavalier and the Poodle to create a smart, affectionate, playful and eager to please. They are highly trainable, obedient and are very easy to teach. They thrive on the company of their family and other household pets. While they are great with children, it is important to teach any young children who come into contact with the Cavoodle to be gentle and that the dog is not a toy. The Cavalier side of the Cavalier Poodle tends to balance out the neuroses of the Poodle side, making it a laid-back and calm companion. Despite this, Cavoodles should not be left alone for long periods of time as they require almost round-the-clock company. Like many breeds, Cavoodles who are left alone and not given enough physical or mental stimulation can develop behavioural problems.
02.01.2022 LETS LEARN ABOUT DOG BREEDS - WHIPPET Whippets are very fast dogs, highly energetic and eager to please their owners. Although Whippets are highly athletic animals and perform to a very high physical standard when given a task, they are considered to be almost lazy when at home and extremely easy going. ... Whippets love to lie about and will often sleep for large portions of the day. Its important to not mistake this behaviour for lethargy as its in the breeds nature to rest about the house. Long walks once or twice daily are essential to a Whippets health and a good run once in a while is important too. Be aware that they are traditionally hunting dogs and tend to chase cars, smaller dogs or wild animals when off the leash. While Whippets are not highly dependent on human attention, they do require a good deal of it, and indoor living suits the breed best. They will thrive in a small living environment, as long as regular walks are maintained, and they have a reputation for being clean and respectful of furniture. Aggression towards other animals in the home is not common, however early socialisation will, as always, help to prevent any problems. Behavioural issues may arise if the Whippet isnt given enough quality time with humans or is under-exercised. Separation anxiety can occur in the breed if left unattended for extended periods of time. Because Whippets can be startled easily, children should be taught to approach one with care and respect. Whippets shouldnt be awoken suddenly or hassled during their rest. They have a great reputation for being gentle with kids, very tolerant and easy going. As with any dog, however, young children should always be supervised.
