25.01.2022 Movies Under the Stars Christmas Edition Due to the current wet weather and that which is predicted for the rest of the week, we have made the difficult decision to postpone this event. The new date will be Saturday 16 January and as Christmas will be well and truly behind us, we will find another family favourite movie to screen- stay tuned! 25.01.2022 Western Sydney artist Linda Brescia has taken out the top award at the 2020 Blacktown City Art Prize (BCAP) for her portrait of American patron of the arts, Peggy Guggenheim. The winning piece, an acrylic on canvas artwork titled Peggy, was painted by Ms Brescia on the day submissions closed, having decided only the day before to enter the prestigious prize. Peggy was chosen from 110 finalists and comes with a prize of $15,000.... Mayor of Blacktown City, Tony Bleasdale, OAM, congratulated Ms Brescia on her winning artwork, which will be acquired for the Blacktown City Art Collection. 'Now in its 25th year, the Blacktown City Art Prize is a major cultural event in Western Sydney. There were a record number of pieces submitted this year almost 900 and all the finalists selected were incredibly impressive. 'Congratulations to Linda Brescia for winning the 2020 Blacktown City Art Prize,' Mayor Bleasdale said. Blacktown City residents, visitors, and art lovers alike are encouraged to view Peggy and all our finalist artworks in person at the BCAP exhibition now open at the Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre.

19.01.2022 Council are regenerating native bushland by flame weeding, a renewed use of old technology that is environmentally friendly and doesn’t harm the environment as chemicals are not used. This project is funded by the Australian Government under the Australian Governments Communities Environment program to assist the community in reducing the impact of invasive weeds and support the recovery of the Cumberland Plain Woodland, a critically endangered ecological community. 18.01.2022 Some relief in sight for Elara traffic congestion. Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale, OAM has joined the Member for Chifley Ed Husic MP, the Member for Londonderry Prue Car MP and Councillor Brad Bunting in an inspection of the now-completed extension of Garfield Road West in Marsden Park that will finally provide a second entry and exit road for Elara estate residents. The new road will be opened in the next few weeks and will take the pressure off Elara Boulevarde, whi...ch up to now has been the only exit point onto Richmond Road and has been the scene of huge traffic delays. The new road is also vital in providing a second emergency exit for the more than 14,000 residents who will eventually call the area home.

10.01.2022 Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer Darryl Hamilton has been named as the 2020 Blacktown Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Citizen of the Year. Darryl Hamilton works as the ACLO with the Mount Druitt Police Area Command, a role which he has served in for almost 20 years. He also plays a pivotal role in the Breaking Barriers fitness program, providing an important circuit breaker for at risk Aboriginal youth.... The program has supported hundreds of young people since its inception in 2014. Councillor Kathie Collins OAM, Chair of Council’s Aboriginal Advisory Committee, presented the Award to Mr Hamilton on behalf of Council and Blacktown City Mayor, Tony Bleasdale OAM. I was immensely honoured to present Darryl Hamilton with this prestigious and important award, which recognises the outstanding contributions of members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to Blacktown City, Cr Collins said. Mayor Bleasdale congratulated Mr Hamilton on the award. The dedication, compassion, and care displayed by Darryl Hamilton is truly inspiring, Mayor Bleasdale said.

07.01.2022 Blacktown City Council has received a highly commended award in the 2020 Keep Australia Beautiful Awards. Our Stormwater education program was recognised in the environmental communications category. Led by our Environment team, in partnership with internal and external stakeholders, our program aims to increase community knowledge on the negative impacts litter can have on stormwater, which ultimately runs into creeks and rivers.... Some of the projects undertaken in 2019/20 include: Stormwater school excursions to Blacktown Showground to educate students on stormwater issues and how they can reduce pollution. Doggy picnic days (in conjunction with Council’s Animal Holding Facility) for resident dog-owners and their dogs to raise awareness of the negative impacts that dog droppings can have on our waterways 'Water Warrior' autumn and spring school holiday events for children to equip them with skills and knowledge to protect our waterways Pilot creek clean ups at Whalan Reserve in partnership with Stormwater Shepherds and the Baitul Huda Mosque.
