14.01.2022 Hot take from a brown person coming in a few days late on the Nazis in our scene saga. I can’t speak for all tinted folk but I think there are some things here ...that are fairly unanimous among us. Every time this comes up I see a bunch of white people being shocked and I envy that. I wish I was surprised. But for us the radar is always up assessing who, in any situation, means us harm or at best treats us differently. At all times you are calculating which bits of yourself to hide and which to amplify or exaggerate to ensure safety. Hiding who you are to protect yourself is shithouse. I know a lot of people can relate to that. In 20+ years of playing live music I’ve never felt the music scene to have any less racism than anywhere else. But almost always you keep it to yourself because people generally want to focus on the very small chance you’re mistaken. But so rarely is it a mistake, it just can take years for it to be clear to others. Some people you share a lot in common with are pretty awful in some ways. It sucks. It isn’t academic to us and it isn’t funny though sometimes all you can do is laugh. It is disturbingly real, mostly frightening and a stern reminder that your life is less important than some others. To some the most important thing all of a sudden seems to be to give these people the benefit of the doubt or some explanation and empathy for how they could have strayed down this path. Seriously, fuck that we are not given this benefit of the doubt and what sort of path do you have to stray down in order to support harming people based on their genetics? I can’t relate to that. It is not news to me to learn this drummer hates coloured people. It’s been 10 years since I’ve had to work alongside them but I know when I’m being looked down on. I know when I am being tolerated rather than accepted. I fucking hate the way that word tolerance is used in this context as if there is anything in us to tolerate. Tolerance is what we show to racists when we still have to work with them. Because you can’t boycott them all. We don’t get to choose when we interact with it. If we had a zero tolerance policy on racism it would mean boycotting school, work, every second gig, dating.pretty much everything else at one point or another. In the music world one of the hardest things to do is be noticed but time and time again it’s proven that you’ll get a LOT more media coverage and talked about a lot more for being a prick or saying stupid shit than you will for being nice to people or writing a good song. You literally can’t buy the kind of attention it’ll get you. I don’t have any answers. I wish I had the confidence of a self righteous white punk to know that exactly what I was doing was gonna stamp out racism. But generally I think they should do less talking and more listening. I don’t want to support or tolerate racism and I also don’t want to give racists another reason to feel they’ve been hard done by or a reason to validate their fears of us. I’d rather be able to invite them to my table and feed them and have them see there is nothing to fear. FWIW I def appreciate it when white people don’t excuse racism.
