24.01.2022 At 4:30 this afternoon, the brigade extinguished a campfire which had been left smouldering in a camp site opposite the Golden Point water hole. If you come across an unattended smouldering campfire, you can report it to 000 and the brigade will deal with it. The Emergency Plus smart phone app has now been upgraded to include single button to call 000 or SES plus your current address, latitude and longitude. The app also has the what3words location system - easier than numbers. Ross, Blackwood Capt.
24.01.2022 The flag at the Fire Station is at half mast today in remembrance of the three US air crew who have tragically died when their C-130 Hercules water bomber crashed yesterday. A sad fire season. Ross, Blackwood Capt.
24.01.2022 At 6:30 pm last night (Wednesday) Blackwood brigade was paged to a report of a column of smoke 2 km South West of Newbury. Blackwood Tanker 1 and Blackwood Ultra Light Tanker, along with two appliances from Trentham investigated the area thoroughly and decided it was a false alarm. Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMV) had ignited two large fuel reduction burns South of Daylesford and they were putting up large smoke plumes. Farmers can now obtain permits for stubble burns a...nd FFMV are beginning their Autumn full reduction burns. Fire Restrictions remain in force for the rest of us. Ross, Blackwood Capt.
23.01.2022 At 3 pm this afternoon (Wednesday), Blackwood Tanker 1 was paged to standby at Ballan Fire Station with Strike Team 1521 as an intense band of lightning passed through the area. The lightning had already started a number of large grass fires west of Ballarat and the Strike Team was on hand to quickly deal with any fires in the grassland or forest. The steady rain reduced the risk and the tanker returned around 5 pm. Ross, Blackwood Capt.
22.01.2022 Another windy day coming up tomorrow. Strong winds are forecast from early Sunday morning and all through the day. Winds subside early Monday. 20.01.2022 The Fire Danger Period for the Moorabool and Hepburn shires will end at midnight on Sunday, April 5. This mean Fire Restrictions are lifted from this Monday -April 6 and you will be able to burn off. Please be careful; while there is plenty of green grass around, the bark and leaf letter dries out quickly after a warm day. Keep an eye on the forecast winds and remember that a burn must not be left unattended. ... Ross, Blackwood Capt.
20.01.2022 Forest Fire Danger will be Very High tomorrow (Monday). NOT a total fire ban, but the north wind returns with the hot weather. Last rain in town was a couple of weeks ago and while the green grass persists, the leaf litter and bark has been baking in the heat. The Weather Bureau expects the north wind to increase to 30 km/h at around 1 AM and then peaking again mid afternoon. Normally humidity increases overnight, but this will not happen tonight with humidity staying low. ... This means that a fire will run in the grassland and forest tonight; and will be difficult to control. Fire bombing helicopters do not operate this late. If you have been cooking outside or had a fire for warmth please ensure is it completely out. Always use water - a safe fire is one you can run your bare fingers through the coals. Rain is forecast Monday evening and early Tuesday. Possibly 25 mm or more. Ross, Blackwood Capt.
19.01.2022 The flag at the station is at half mast today in memory of the four police officers who died in yesterdays tragic incident. Ross, Blackwood Capt.

17.01.2022 Due to the current situation with the Covid-19 Virus, we have minimized station checks and postponed training for the brigade, but please note, we will still be responding as normal to all calls. Everyone stay safe during this current situation.
16.01.2022 Blackwood brigade training this morning at Golden Point. A pumping exercise, so we all ended up very wet. Ross, Blackwood Capt.
15.01.2022 Very High Fire Danger for tomorrow, Sunday. Not overly hot, but strong northerly winds ahead of a cool change in the afternoon. Winds are forecast to be strongest around lunchtime. NOT a day of total fire ban, but fires for cooking and warmth can only be lit when winds are less than 10 km/h. Wind tomorrow is expected to be around 40 km/h, gusting to 55 km/h. Light rain is forecast after the change with a possible thunderstorm.... Ross, Blackwood Capt.
15.01.2022 At 4:20 this morning, the brigade was paged to attend a house fire at Spargo Creek. Due to lack of water, 10 tankers were paged from across the area. By the time our tanker arrived on scene, the fire was under control and we were no longer required. From what we saw, the house was severely damaged. Tanker 1 was back in station at 6 AM. 13.01.2022 Friday, January 31 has been declared a day of Total Fire Ban in the Central District which includes Blackwood. The Fire Danger Rating is Severe. The forecast is for a very hot day with moderate winds. Winds will be higher to our west towards Ballarat and above 800 metres altitude (Blackwood Ridge Rd). Increasing humidity during the day may bring dry lightning. Wind easing at night. The temperature is expected to stay high all Friday night and then good rain Saturday.... Monitor the Vic Emergency web page/App for information about incidents. The App is so fast now that it signals at the same time our pagers go off. This means that the fire location may not be accurate and details vague until crews or a helicopter are on scene. Stay safe. Ross, Blackwood Capt.
12.01.2022 Now that the Fire Restrictions have ended and burn-offs are allowed, a reminder to register your burn-off before lighting up. The number to call: 1800 668 511 By registering your burn, you will prevent unnecessary brigade callouts. When you register your burn, the call taker will ask your address, the nearest cross street, the size of your burn pile (e.g. 1 metre x 2 metres), what you are burning (e.g. garden waste), what time you are lighting up and the time the fire will ...be out. Finally your name and a contact number. If you lose control of your burn, call 000 straight away. Ross, Blackwood Capt.
12.01.2022 Just a reminder than daylight savings finishes tonight so dont forget to put your clocks back one hour, also it is a good time to check your smoke detector batteries.
10.01.2022 Current CFA COVID-19 regulations do not allow public visits to the Blackwood Fire Refuge. Moorabool Shire Council have put together this short video to explain how the refuge operates in the case of an emergency. Remember that the safest option on a severe or extreme fire danger day is to not be in town. The refuge should be seen as a place of last resort. Happy to answer any questions. ... 09.01.2022 The CFA statewide pager system is going offline tonight for a network upgrade from 10 PM for 8 hours. In case we are called to an incident or fire we have a backup system with some of us to be notified using mobile phones, but we may need to use the station siren. If you hear the fire siren this evening, this will be the reason. Hopefully all will be quiet. Ross, Blackwood Capt.
08.01.2022 Might be best to postpone any burning today. Severe weather warning for this afternoon with strong winds. Please ensure any bonfires are extinguished before the strong winds arrive. Ross, Blackwood Capt. http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDV21037.shtml

06.01.2022 Strong winds are expected across central Victoria from early tomorrow morning until Wednesday afternoon. If you have been burning anything, it might be a good time to confirm that your bonfire is completely extinguished. Always use water. Still very green around the town, but the last couple of warm days have dried out the bark and leaf litter. A fire will run in the bush with the forecast winds. Ross, Blackwood Capt.
05.01.2022 At 4:30 pm yesterday afternoon (Saturday) the brigade was paged to an escaped burn off at Dales Creek. 02.01.2022 At 6:32 pm this evening (Friday) Blackwood Tanker 1 was paged to assist Myrniong CFA with multiple fires east of Myrniong between the Western Freeway and Pentland Hills Rd. Blackwood Ultra Light Tanker was paged soon after to make up part of Strike Team 1521 for the same fires. Erratic winds in open grassland had the fire threatening a number of properties. About 20 tankers and a water bomber attended the fire. Freeway traffic was halted for a time to allow easy access for fire appliances and fire investigators. The cause of the fire is still being determined. Both Blackwood appliances were back in station at 9:30 pm. Ross, Blackwood Captain.
