25.01.2022 Not Just Fences! The BlazeAid Trillions of Paddock Trees Program rolls out this week from our camps in the Upper Murray. This initiative aims to replace Paddock trees lost to fires, drought and years of clearing. Paddock trees provide significant benefits for farmers including shelter from the elements for livestock and improvements to soil conditions as well as salinity and erosion management. The environmental benefits are also far reaching with shelter, protection and nest...ing sites provided to native wildlife. An exciting new partnership between BlazeAid and Albury company Plastic Forests gives us the ability to enhance our focus on environmental issues further with this project. Plastic Forests is an award winning Australian company which specializes in manufacturing recycled plastic products made from used soft plastics. We are trialing their innovative new pickets in this project. Volunteers are needed to plant trees in both Jingellic and Walwa starting this Wednesday. If you want to come and give a day or a few hours please phone Natalie Trigwell on 0497 717 605. Be sure to read our attached Weekly Update and contact Camp CoOrdinator Natalie Trigwell for further details. Email: [email protected] Mobile: 0497 717605

25.01.2022 Lucindale SA BlazeAid vase camp for the Blackford fire recovery Kind donations are beginning already with Tanaposts Mt Gambier 08 8723 2511 donating a truck load of their renowned non toxic non flammable wood fencing posts for burnt out farmers and Bev rang a few minutes ago from NaracoorteWoolworths asking how their local supermarket can help ? ( indeed yes as we are expecting masses of deserving blazeaid volunteers cleaning up hundreds of kms of burnt fencing and re buil...ding with new and they will work up big appetites in the heat and hard blackened work ) Remember that all 100% donations go towards the fire recovery and nil to admin (Debbie our one girl in admin is paid by GST credits due to our charity status ) Can Vic NSW and Qld potential volunteers apply for permit/ registration to cross over the SA border asap pls by googling the SA Govts ‘Travel to and from South Australia Covid Safe travel tips’ and following their instructions pls? I am hoping for the Lucindale Field days site as it has a commercial kitchen etc. for BlazeAid once the firies are gone and anyone on that Field Day Committee who can help, would you kindly Phone Lucindale SA Coord Mary Howarth Pls Call Her On 0429367538 ASAP and give info It is essential to get moving on a securing a blazeaid base within days of a fire as I have found it means hundreds of thousands of dollars MORE to the burnt out community as donors and vols are willing to act massively with confidence when it’s in the news and on everyone’s lips. Our heartfelt empathy goes out to those farmers who have or currently putting down their loved sheep and cattle but we would like them to know that they will be supported beyond their imaginations- the base is expected to run for up to 3-4 months , 7 days a week with up to 10 fencing teams on 10 farms daily. Viterra at Malala who kindly house our CombatReady trailers full of equipment have been alerted Many thanks Kevin Butler BlazeAid President 0418530471 OR [email protected] AND follow us on Facebook - search for ‘blazeaid’

24.01.2022 East Gippsland BlazeAid Fire recovery at Bruthen is now closed After 9 months helping the Bruthen Community with fire recovery -every day seven days a week- the BlazeAid Coordinator David Geekie and all 881 volunteers are very proud to present these stats and return the Bruthen Recreational Reserve where Blazeaid was set up back to the locals: Direct cash injected into local businesses for General supplies eg Posts Wire/ groceries/ fuel was $345,600... From locally, all over Australia and internationally there were 881 volunteers who worked on the fencelines 6,400 volunteer days averaging 8.2 working days each. Boundary fences and many internals were rebuilt on 212 farms where 115 Kilometres of burnt fencing was cleared and 172 kilometres of new fencing was built with a conservative value of $1.72 million BlazeAid would like to thank the President and Committee of Management of the Bruthen Recreational Reserve for their help and cooperation during our long stay, the East Gippsland Shire Council, the Vic State Govt, Richard Techere of Bushfire Recovery Victoria, DELWP and the locals and farmers who welcomed BlazeAiders into their community to help with the recovery and a special thanks to the volunteers and coordinators ( David Geekie, Linda and Nick, Mike, Phil, Harm, Julie) who made it all happen. I am most grateful to the selfless farmers who have kindly taken responsibility and security and given weatherproof cover for our $250k of CombatReady trailers , Swift shelters etc Without all these volunteers, BlazeAid could not even exist. Thankyou also to the hundreds of generous people who donate to BlazeAid- we like to respect every dollar you give by giving 100% back to the recovery with BlazeAid having only TWO people part time in admin with one giving up an extra quarter of her time for volunteering as well! We had our AGM last Tuesday night (26/10/20) and all the reports are there for you to read at blazeaid.com website. Kevin and Rhonda Butler BlazeAid founders Kilmore East Vic

24.01.2022 Fascinating tree planting stories from the dry country after fires- from Rob Thomas Eyre Peninsula 2005 onwards- if you want to come to blazeaid at Walwa / Jingelic to do something similar please contact Jingelic AAA Coord Natalie 0497717605 We need to have a paddock tree planting army getting off to a great start straight ( alongside the fencing crews) after the fires all over Australia each Feb/ March onwards and Rob may have the answer with the post hole digger and 100 li...tres of water method ( expensive but necessary) ‘Ive noticed you are tree planting now fantastic , Ive done lots of this the last project on my farm before i sold it was 4000 tubestock in 450mm rainfall country , reason for the message is i trialed "Long Stem Planting" with amazing results , overgrown sugar gums a metre tall dropped to the bottom of a post hole and the dirt filled in no watering at all and two metres of growth in 18 mths , plenty of info about this these days , trees can be planted with a water lance , perhaps consider this as its quick easy and effective , i would love to help but im in SA . Regards Rob Thomas.

23.01.2022 Amanda and her husband had help rebuilding their fences after fire hit their property in 2009. She now volunteers her time to give some of that back, knowing first-hand how powerful a group of willing hands can be both physically and emotionally in the aftermath of the fires.

22.01.2022 BlazeAid will still have some camps operating this summer especially in Southern NSW. #blazeaidcobargo #blazeaidtowamba #blazeaidbemboka... #blazeaidbombala The traditional backbone of volunteers for BlazeAid are the amazing Grey Nomads or independent travellers. For the last six months we have had many volunteers from overseas through our camps which means we can provide accommodation, in the form of a swift shelter. As you can see from the pictures these can make a cosy little habitat. So all you need is clothes and bedding to join one of our camps. Please share far and wide with your networks, it would be great to see some young Aussie's on the fence lines.

22.01.2022 Don’t they look fantastic at beautiful Walwa blazeaid on the Murray Good on you Natalie , Amanda and team!

21.01.2022 Why we need to plant more paddock trees to replace this ageing beauty - on my kilmore east farm, three new born lambs shelter from the weekend blizzard on the North side opposite to the Southerly Antarctic wind and rain ( current temp when ( 6:10 pm Sat) this photo was taken was 2 degrees with a minus 2 chill factor) Well done all those Vic blazeaid bases - Walwa, Buchan, Bruthen and Wulgulmerang together with farmers and tree planting vols who are planting and guarding paddock tree tube stock as we speak) BlazeAid with Plastic Forests Albury pays for all trees and fencing guards. Farmers need only call their blazeaid base as the first step

21.01.2022 Vale Peter Tucker. Blazeaid is saddened to hear of the passing of long time volunteer, over many bases, throughout many years, Peter Tucker. You will be greatly missed. Our heart felt sympathy goes out to Margaret and family.

20.01.2022 BlazeAid is seeking expressions of interest from farmers who would like to ultimately to have a seat and say on the BlazeAid board. We like a balance of skills on the Board and at present we only have three active farmers on it and are concerned. We have no beef farmers nor NSW farmers or SA or WA or Tas farmers on the Board ... If you are a farmer and have been helped by BlazeAid after these recent fires and are passionate about the blazeaid cause, pls let your local blazeaid coordinator know by this Sunday Sept 20 and then ring me The work involved is reading and responding to the daily ongoing Chats through WhattsApp ( Committee Chat, Coordinator Chat, Tool chat etc) and weekly teleconferences Tues 12 midday Our AGM is on the 27 th Oct so you need to move now if you are interested Many thanks Kevin Butler BlazeAid President 0418530471 OR [email protected] AND follow us on Facebook - search for ‘blazeaid’

20.01.2022 Official BlazeAid Documentary launching on Thursday in Edithburgh. Everyone who cannot attend the official Premiere screening will be able to watch it online fr...om Thursday onwards in their own time. After several months of filming and editing, it is now finished and it is world class. It runs for 75 minutes having tens and tens of farmers coordinators and volunteers tell their stories from the camps and on the fencelines. It is an exceptional professional masterpiece and reflects the true character of Blazeaid. Out of respect for farmers, the filmmakers made a decision to not show any fire in the film, it is a story of the human spirit coming together to overcome the devastation of the black summer and help rebuild both fences and lives. We will share the link here as soon as we have it! See more

19.01.2022 Blazeaid Adelong celebrated St Patricks day with appropriate decorations, food and our own personal leprechaun. The team is working well to complete fencing for... the nearly 200 farmers that still require help with their fencing. We are very proud of the fences that have been erected since March. A big call out for new volunteers to help us continue this great work. It is extremely rewarding and great fun. We require assistance with fencing, catering, tool maintenance and odd jobs. Give us a call on 0457039566 . We would love to have you join us. 17.01.2022 What BlazeAiders do-a heart warming story from Christine Male Wingham NSW ‘Good evening, just want to mention to you how proud we are of 2 volunteers in particular. The situation is a remote camp, 24 km of fencing burned. 80ish farmer and slightly younger wife with dementia. Each afternoon one of our blazeaid volunteers takes wife for a walk to give farmer some relief. That is - Walsh - our volunteer took the lady down to stream where they skimmed stones along the cree...k. The lady was so happy and enjoyed every moment- her husband was overwhelmed at seeing his wife having such fun! Our volunteers are extraordinary and to give so much care to a struggling family is humbling and something we should all be very proud of’ Christine- the story is also a reflection of your wonderful leadership- just great work and we salute you all at Wingham where 600 properties are registered for help (300 completed) like the one with the lady with dementia BlazeAid- more than rebuilding fences. More ‘like building bridges’ in peoples’ lives See more

12.01.2022 A letter from Louise: ‘ Hi Rhonda and Kevin I just saw your information about the Trillions of Paddock Tree programme. Unfortunately, I am in stage 4 Melbourne area so can't attend - yet! Once we are out of Stage 4 would love to attend. I work for TreeProject Victoria. We are a not for profit that does farm land revegetation. We have over 200 volunteer growers in Victoria who grow the seedlings ordered by the landholders - I wonder if we may be of some use to your group in t...he future - we only grow for Victoria. If you think we may be of some use let me know and I will put you in touch with the office. Please keep me in the loop for further planting days at your place thanks Louise Dear Louise ‘Yes definitely We have planting/ training days here on my farm at Kilmore East every Tuesday and Thursday 9-3 am where we can plant local natives over bare paddocks and protect with steel guards against animal predation. Some volunteers elect to go onto Walwa blazeaid ( near Wodonga on the Murray River) to continue plantings on fire smashed farms Others continue to plant out and train others on my farm Yes we are needing indigenous local trees like the yellow box and black wattle etc so we would be very appreciative This is a forever / recurring project as trees need to be planted after fires Just like fences need to be put back up to keep livestock in - we also need trees for shade, shelter etc and to provide an example for our children as climate change is going to have a massive impact in our lives. Very soon I hope Stage 4 restrictions will ease and I would love you and your people to be involved please Many thanks Kevin Butler BlazeAid President 0418530471 OR [email protected] AND follow us on Facebook - search for ‘blazeaid’ Kevs farm address is : 70 Nannys crk rd Kilmore East or on Google maps put in ‘blazeaid’

12.01.2022 Moruya camp is hoping to reopen next week - our major hurdle is getting enough volunteers to make the camp the success we know it can be. We need people to hel...p fence, cook and clean. We need people for a day, week , month.... whatever you can spare Everyone seems to think, That was a year ago, it’s all over - not the case at all. Over 100 properties in Eurobodella Shire still need help, many of these are farms that are struggling to survive in tough times. Because the devestation of last year’s fires has slipped from full media attention people have forgotten about the carnage that occurred in south east NSW. Some roads are still closed, access to some areas is still difficult and we can make property owners feel better because they are not forgotten, alone or not cared about. The camp ground at Moruya has plenty of room, power, water and grassy sites. We would welcome you if you can give us a hand. Call Christine Male on 0418745994

10.01.2022 A big Thankyou to Louise at Tree Project Victoria who donated 100 healthy native Red Gums and Acacia Mearnsii black wattles yesterday to our Kilmore East base Beautiful stock and so healthy We will experiment with adding Seasol stimulant to reduce stress with drier soils and get stock over to our Vic base camps very soon Appreciated Louise

09.01.2022 All good - Thankyou for helping here - spoke with Katrina from NSW farmers this morning and we are getting organised ‘I am desperately trying to reach Catriona McCauliffe re: the cherry picking harvest impending crisis of backpacker labor shortage with the fruit going to rot if not picked on time and the possibility of the BlazeAid model assisting ( would NOT be funded by blazeaid or our volunteers under blazeaid but our model could be used with great success) ... There are many farmers and their mental health status if they don’t get their harvest in that blazeaid is worried about Many thanks Kevin Butler BlazeAid President 0418530471 OR [email protected] AND follow us on Facebook - search for ‘blazeaid’

09.01.2022 If there is a regional Victorian interested in a direct road trip to do a small delivery from Plastic Forests in Albury NSW to Kilmore East Vic (257 km) Must be here by 12 midday this Saturday The cargo is 100 reinforced light plastic fence posts for tree planting guards ( about 5 ft 6 long and 2-3 kg each) - a normal sedan/ 4 WD is fine. A Worker permit will be signed off and issued to you by BlazeAid for bushfire recovery purposes in case you are asked by police about you...r journey. Happy to reimburse for fuel if you wish - upon receipt to the office BlazeAid is very interested in recycling Australia’s mountains of waste plastic for the Trillions of Paddock trees program after fires to replace the large older trees that are dying. I am planning another paddock tree planting trial with these from 2-4 pm on this Sat- bring your raincoats, gum boots, masks etc Please call me now if you can reliably do the trip between now and Sat Sept 12 Many thanks Kevin Butler BlazeAid President 0418530471 OR [email protected] AND follow us on Facebook - search for ‘blazeaid’ Photo below is the bare area where several paddock trees / guards just planted last week but more needs doing this sat See more

09.01.2022 It is so nice for a family to take the time and to send a Thankyou to the wonderful volunteers who make blazeaid what is. This thoughtfulness is from the McKimmie family at Corryong blazeaid.

08.01.2022 Vote (and share!) for BlazeAid in the People’s Choice Award- 1 vote allowed per person per day!

08.01.2022 BlazeAid is a volunteer based charity that succeeds because of the dedication of it’s volunteers and the generosity of the Australian people. Our greatest asse...t is our volunteers, people who generously give their time to helping farmers, communities and their fellow volunteers to rebuild after a natural disaster. COVID has had a massive impact on the world and of course BlazeAid, but we have found a way through in many communities. We have achieved this by following government guidelines, navigating the different rules in each state, educating ourselves and perhaps most importantly, caring. Sometimes our coordinators and prospective volunteers have been frustrated by our restrictions, sometimes even the committee has felt some of that frustration, but the reason has always been to try and keep everyone safe. We need to remember that we are guests in communities and COVID has led to many people feeling scared and insecure, so our responsible course of action has been to be ultra cautious. We have never meant to offend, upset or disappoint volunteers or communities. We just want you and everyone else to be safe and healthy! The first question we ask volunteers usually revolve around when can you come, how long can you stay, do you have specialist skills etc? Unfortunately now we have to ask where you are from, have you had contact with a "hotspot " area etc. the reason we put ourselves through is because we care. Please folks have patience with us. We are doing our best in uncharted, unprecedented times and are so looking forward to the day we don't have to be so restricted in how we accept volunteers. Take care all. Christine Male Blazeaid Vice President See more

03.01.2022 Please Share- Help needed for Trillions of Paddock Trees planting pilot program into East Gippsland after the fires. Paddock trees are gradually being lost after long droughts, fires, old age and being blown over by the wind in soft ground and we need to have a replacement program. We are seeking one or more farms registered with blazeaid in East Gippsland from these blazeaid bases Bruthen Buchan... Cann River Wulgulmerang to have paddock trees planted and guarded by volunteers at NO cost to you - please call me now on 0418530471 BlazeAid at a cost of $20 per paddock tree will supply ALL Fencing / guards PLUS the trees and do all the work for FREE to you- you simply point out where you want the individual trees planted. ( On my 1500 acre farm over the last 25 years I have gone for paddock trees planted 100-150 metres apart with great success and now have heaps of shade, aesthetic beauty of a mix of Eucalypts and local wattles with NO loss of grass- my neighbor Brian has done the same over 3000 acres) BlazeAid volunteers are currently planting trees on local farms from Walwa BlazeAid and Jingelic BlazeAid but Corryong BlazeAid has said it is unable to take the extra several volunteers to help plant trees there. Also, If you know where we can source local tree tube stock, please phone the blazeaid coordinator and tell them Also if you have any old steel posts from the fire, we would be most grateful for them to reuse as well as the fantastic Plastic Forests tree guards please. I have reused thousands of steel posts from the 2009 Black Sat fires for this purpose- simply bang them in upside down ( firstly, bench press drill a hole for wire beforehand in your shed or angle grind a cut for wire) Many thanks Kevin Butler BlazeAid President 0418530471 OR [email protected] AND follow us on Facebook - search for ‘blazeaid’ Photo shows ten year old paddock trees planted with ample random spacing on my kilmore east farm
