25.01.2022 Just over two years ago, Australian Blind Football's blind football team played their first ever international game against India and our partially sighted futs...al team played their first ever international against Malaysia. Did you know there are two formats of football for people with vision loss? Blind Football, or Football 5-a-side as it is known at the Paralympics, which is played by athletes who are totally blind (B1). Partially Sighted Futsal, which will hold its World Championships at the IBSA World Games in Birmingham in 2023 and is played by athletes who are partially sighted/vision impaired (B2/B3). In addition to our national teams, Australian Blind Football has programs for all ages, male and female and all levels of vision loss, whether you want to play locally or aspire to represent your country. 17.01.2022 Watching the Blind Cricketers I met in Bengaluru, their attitude is something that should be celebrated. They have the Spirit of the game running through their ...veins. When my turn came with the bat I connected with two in twenty shots. The images of these players were etched in my mind and captured through the lens of my camera. 13.01.2022 It's a fast invigorating game which goes by the name of Swish. Welcome to the world of blind table tennis. At the helm of the local Perth group is Peter John...son. He's been involved with the sport for a staggering 52 years! Here he is holding the rectangular bat used in Swish with the ball which rattles when hit. A former board member of VisAbility, Peter's keen for more people to get involved. It's fun and social so come and give it a try. You use a bat which I'm holding here and we have a ping pong ball which rattles. You bat so the ball goes under the net rather than over it. Want to come and try? First timers are free and the group meets this Saturday 8th August. When? Every second Saturday of the month Where? Luke's Church Hall, George Street, Maylands Time? 1pm to 5pm Cost? $3 Need more information? Ring Peter on 0477 901 902. 08.01.2022 Opening up the Australian landscape for Blind or Vision Impaired people to engage in sport Blind Sports Australia is pleased to announce that they have received funding through the Department of Health’s Driving Inclusion through Sport initiative, to roll out a multifaceted program to provide more opportunities for people who are blind or vision impaired to get active and involved in sport. This project will open up opportunities for people who are blind or vision impaired ...to engage in sport in their local communities, through a series of activities aimed at educating both the blind and low vision community and the broader community about opportunities that are available. The 3 key deliverables of this project are: 1. Develop online training modules, based on Australian best practice, to assist coaches and volunteers to learn more about vision impairment, communication strategies, adapting sports and ways to empowering people who are blind or vision impaired to take part in sport. 2. Create resources in online or printable formats that assist coaches, volunteers and clubs, to have specific tools, exercises, skills and capacity to engage blind or vision impaired athletes in specific sports. This will include adapting existing world-class material into an Australian context and working with BSA member organisations and relevant NSOs, in the production of new material for other key sports undertaken in Australia. 3. Establish new and strengthen existing regional hubs for blind sporting activity, to enable ongoing opportunities for people who are blind or vision impaired to participate in sport. Blind Sports Australia is privileged to have a wonderful membership base of both state-based and sport based member organisations. One of the key aims of this project will be to engage with and support existing member organisations in the work that they do across the country. We will also work closely with our members, other vision-based organisations, various collaboration partners and local communities to grow and strengthen new opportunities for people to participate in sport in their local areas. We hope that this 2-year project will be a springboard for many people who are blind or have low vision, that have not had regular engagement with sport, to have access to ongoing opportunities to participate in sport through the development of resources, awareness-raising and growth of important networks.
