They are the also the only farmgate in the state to cultivate and sell the unique native Tasmanian flat oyster, the Angasi.

22.01.2022 LOOK AT WHAT WE FOUND: a pearl in one of our opened oysters! One of our customers also told us that they had found 2 pearls in 1 tray of our opened oysters a few weeks ago the pearls were cream and black!! What are your chances of finding a pearl when you buy oysters from us?

22.01.2022 The Blue Lagoon Oyster team provided oysters to a Grade 2 class so that they could experience the taste of a fresh oyster during the NAIDOC week. Miss Roberts encouraged all the children to attempt and then write about this exercise. Miss Roberts passed on 1 child’s response that had been placed in the school newsletter. It is so delightful that I had to share this our community.

20.01.2022 Aleaha has kindly sent the photo she had taken of the 2 pearls that she found in 1 tray of our oysters a few weeks ago. Thank you Aleaha for sharing your find. The pearl story has certainly generated much local interest and Sue was interviewed by ABC Radio on Monday afternoon.

Many thanks from our small team to Shell Dunalley, Murdunna Roadhouse & Nubeena IGA. 12.01.2022 I think it is a good time to share some scientific research supporting the antiviral properties of oysters. Although we can't say that oysters will treat or pre...vent COVID19 , they have certain properties that may be beneficial in boosting our immunity and or inhibiting viruses. The first is a high Zinc content. Oysters are known to be one of the best sources of natural Zinc. Zinc is currently being used in a clinical trial for coronavirus in a University of Melbourne lead study, and Zinc has previously been shown to inhibit coronavirus (SARS) replication - see te Velthuis et al 2010 Plos Pathogens : https://www.researchgate.net/publication/47794995. The second reason is that oyster hemolymph (blood) contains at least 2 antiviral compounds (Cavortin and Viperin). We identified Cavortin as a major antiviral compound and documented the anti-Herpes Simplex virus activity of a large number of Pacific oyster breeding lines from Australia and all had some activity (Green et al 2014 Antiviral research http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.antiviral.2014.08.010) A subsequent study by Green at al 2015 Journal of General Virology (2015), 96, 35873597 identified Viperin and documented the antiviral activity against Dengue virus. This protein has been shown to inhibit a wide range of viruses including influenza, human cytomeglovirus, HIV and Hep C. Other studies on oyster plasma have reported activity against infectious pancreatic necrosis virus, human adenoviruses and rotoviruses - see out review paper Dang et al 2015 J Virol 89:81148118. doi:10.1128/JVI.00287-15. Some of the viruses mentioned above are single stranded RNA viruses like COVID-19 and some have lipid envelopes like COVID-19. So although we don't know if the oyster anti-viral agents will work against COVID-19 there is a good basis for further research. In the meantime - I suggest oysters are a good "functional food" - i.e. a food that provides heath benefits over and above basic nutrition. So if anyone in the oyster industry wants to promote this to boost local sales I am willing to provide some quotes or interview of media release. PM me. We should also promote the Aust Shellfish quality assurance program to support the industry and prevent over harvesting from local reefs!
