25.01.2022 Writing and reading are taught from Kindergarten, as the child first learns pre-literacy skills, developing oral language, phonological and phonemic awareness, as well as knowledge of the alphabet. Self-regulation and development of memory and sequential processing are supported through active story recall. The child first learns to write using the shape of the letters to suggest meaning: M for mountain, V for valley. In addition, they may walk the shape on the floor and draw... pictures that include that shape. The children write words and read from their own writing before working with printed literature. We aim throughout the classes to share quality literature with the students. They celebrate the changing seasons and learn how to adapt their behaviour so they are aligned with mother nature. Our students join the wider mountains community celebrating events such as the Autumn Harvest Festival, the Winter Lantern Festival and the Spring Festival. In late August Class 6 students celebrated and honoured the long-standing tradition within BMSS... of the Firesticks Performance. This performance marks a rite of passage for our senior students as they prepare for the transition to high school. While COVID prevented parents and friends from being on campus to watch, we filmed the performance which gave the children a chance to share the experience later with family and friends. 16.01.2022 Pre-kindy days are tiring for little people, even in the most gentle and nurturing environments. Our afternoon rhythm includes a snack and an epsom salt and lav...ender bath after a busy day. With me sitting nearby to chat if she likes or just hold space (breathe in). A reset, to centre again and readjust to being home. After this, the energy level changes and she will happily play (breathe out) until dinner time. Transitioning between environments (school to home) can be hard for little people - and big people, and if you’ve ever experienced the ‘witching hour’ you’ll know exactly what I mean. Too many ‘breathe in’ or too many ‘breathe out’ moments strung together disrupts the balance. See more
