25.01.2022 Pretty mindblowing encounter with a couple of humpback whales during our research programme on the Great Barrier Reef. It truly is a thrilling experience when the encounters are on their terms. Great footage on a GoPro camera by one of the BPM Research Assistants! Our Great Barrier Reef Whale and Dolphin Research Programme is run in collaboration with the Cetacean Ecology and Acoustics Laboratory at the University of Queensland and with the International Fund for Animal Welfare - IFAW. Note: data were collected under permits issued by the Australian Government and in accordance with our animal ethics approval.

24.01.2022 COTS (Crown of Thorns Starfish) team still out doing crucial work on the southern GBR

19.01.2022 Back again for 2020, the BPM Great Barrier Reef Whale and Dolphin Research Programme. Watch the amazing footage taken during our research trips and come join us in 2020. Further information available at www.blueplanetmarine.com

19.01.2022 A couple of the BPM Crown of Thorn Starfish team taking a well deserved break at Cook's Look on top of Lizard Island. Since mid-November 2018, BPM's 32-strong team, led by David Paton and Dan Godoy, has: surveyed approx. 40 reefs in the far north Great Barrier Reef; completed more than 500 km of survey line tows; and spent more than 14 weeks at sea. It's not all about starfish, while surveying, the team has also seen manta rays, sharks, crocodiles, dolphins and heaps of turtles. It's a hard life ... but someone's got to do it!

18.01.2022 Watch this awesome video for a taste of what you can experience when you join Blue Planet Marine and researchers from the University of Queensland, undertaking research on humpback whales on the Great Barrier Reef. Yip ... that's right ... YOU can come along too ... working with marine mammals ... on the Great Barrier Reef ... doesn't get much better than that. 17.01.2022 Some photos from the second week of our humpback whale research programme on the Great Barrier Reef. We had some wonderful encounters and got some good sound recordings. We saw lots of humpbacks (including calves), some bottlenose dolphins, sea snakes, a manta ray, green turtles and a shark. The team will be back on the water again soon. If you're keen to join us as a research assistant, check out our website. We'll be updating it soon with the dates for our 2019 research season. Note: Data were collected under permits issued by the Australian Government and in accordance with our animal ethics approval.

17.01.2022 Great Barrier Reef Whale and Dolphin Research Programme - Sept 2018. Thanks Kate Mathieson for this awesome video of your week with us as a Research Assistant. If you're keen to join us next year, check out our website. www.blueplanetmarine.com Credit: Kate Mathieson.

17.01.2022 And ... that's a wrap! This is the last day of our 2019 research season on the Great Barrier Reef. Thanks to all the research assistants, researchers (Blue Planet Marine,The University of Queensland, Griffith University), crew and sponsors (ifaw) who made this another awesome year with the whales. We'll have dates for our 2020 research season soon.

14.01.2022 With the 2020 Whale and Dolphin Research Programme in doubt due to expected travel restrictions, Blue Planet Marine cannot wait to share these adventures again in 2021

12.01.2022 Keep an eye out everyone on the New South Wales/Queensland coast! There's another all-white humpback whale on the loose.

12.01.2022 BPM’s bathymetry data adding to knowledge of Great Barrier Reef Blue Planet Marine is part of the extensive effort by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to monitor and cull crown of thorns starfish on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Over the last couple of months we’ve also joined other ‘citizen science’ vessels and logged GPS and water depth data during our travels on the GBR. These data are supplied to Dr Robin Beaman from JCU: James Cook University, Australia, for ...analysis and mapping. Dr Beaman is spearheading a team working to improve the accuracy of the 3D depth model of the GBR and enable better understanding of the reef habitats and their management. Several organisations are supporting this work, including the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, which provided the grant funds for the data loggers used on each vessel. The image below was produced using 3D visualisation software. It shows the latest voyage by BPM’s research vessel Flying Fish V (7-14 September 2019) in the Capricorn-Bunker Group, with the vessel's navigation and depth data superimposed over the latest 3D depth model of the GBR. These new data are special because Dr Beaman and his team can revise the 3D depth model to be more accurate in those places where the vessel has transited, particularly for remote areas of the reef which may have no existing digital depth data. It’s an awesome project and we’re thrilled to assist. For more info on the project, see https://www.deepreef.org/projects/246-crowdsourcebathy.html.

12.01.2022 BPM is happy to be partnering with Oceans 2 Earth to reach an even greater audience of volunteers who care about conservation and research. Take a look at our research programme and check out Oceans 2 Earth Volunteers too!

10.01.2022 Great pic montage by Paul Swain from our August 2018 humpback whale research trip on the Great Barrier Reef. Paul was one of the research assistants who joined us. Thanks Paul for the great video. Looking forward to seeing you back in 2019!

08.01.2022 Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi! Go Bec Wellard and Curtin University.

07.01.2022 Blue Planet Marine's Crown of Thorns Starfish work adding to GBR mapping efforts. BPM's research vessel, RV Flying Fish, has recently been fitted with a SmartLog data logger to help reveal the bathymetry of some of the Great Barrier Reef's lesser travelled spots. During our Crown of Thorns Starfish work for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, GPS and echo sounding data from our on-board chart plotter will be logged and provided to Dr Robin Beaman from JCU: James Co...ok University, Australia for analysis. A number of 'citizen science' vessels are working with Dr Beaman and have already collected over million depth data points, revealing old river channels and the edges of coral reefs that are deeper than expected. These data will improve the accuracy of the 3D depth model of the GBR and enable better understanding of the reef habitats and their management. For more info on this awesome project, see the article below.

06.01.2022 It was fantastic to be involved with some of the first marine field testing of Cloud Brightening technology on the GBR. Check out this short summary clip
