14.01.2022 I have run a creative business for over 5 years but the irony of this is that I became quite creatively blocked by it. I think it was the pressure I felt to always produce a ‘product’, a new design or whatever every time I sat down with a pencil and paper. The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron has come across my path several times over the years but I wasn’t ready for it. About April this year I was ready for it. You know what they say, When the student is ready, the teacher app...ears. This teacher, however, got lost on the way. I knew my artistic sister had a copy of it. She had offered to loan it to me many times. I knew because of COVID that I wouldn’t be seeing her any time soon. We don’t live in the same city. So I asked her to post it to me. It never arrived. 21 weeks later and it is still a no show. It is probably languishing behind some Australia Post sorting machine somewhere! So I went searching for it secondhand. I try not to buy many physical books new so always try to find secondhand first. Well, this is a book people clearly hold on to because it is nearly impossible to find secondhand! Nothing on EBay, nothing on Gumtree, nothing in my Buy Nothing Group (although I was able to borrow a copy from one lovely member). One day I set out on a mission to visit Canberra’s secondhand bookstores to find it. In the fourth bookshop, Barry’s Bookshop (which I didn’t even know existed until the lovely Laura from Canty's Bookshop told me about it) I finally found it right up on the top shelf! After an initial read through, I went back to the beginning and have worked through the entire 12 week program. Through it I have rediscovered a love of journalling and also, thankfully, my courage to be creative. It has also been somewhat of a spiritual journey starting with reluctantly keeping an open mind to what Julia Cameron refers to as God but what I have come to think of as the creative energy of the universe. I think it was the heavy use of the term God that, in part, stopped me from persevering with this book earlier but it has been worth the ‘suspension of scepticism’ because I got so much out of this course. 13.01.2022 Is it throw-back Thursday? No (well, it could be...) but it is time for me to say goodbye to Blue Radish. This was my very first Blue Radish logo. What a long way I have come since then! Blue Radish goes back to about 2010 but it was in 2015 that I jumped in to small creative business with both feet. Since then my logo changed twice as I learnt soooooooo much and refined what my Blue Radish brand would be. I credit Canberra's Handmade Market with a huge portion of my developm...ent. It was the high demands of that marketplace that pushed me to continually improve as a business person and as an artist and maker. It was also through the many, many conversations I had with my lovely customers there that I learnt that creative business isn’t all about me. I thank each and every one of my customers, followers and fans (at Handmade and everywhere else) for all the support, feedback and fun you gave me under my label Blue Radish. I have loved Blue Radish so much. It has taken me a long time - literally years - to let it go. Eventually I found a way and that was to open up another avenue for my inner artist to bring her creations to the world. Now that Rebecca Angela is well on her way, Blue Radish can retire. I’d love for you to continue to follow me @rebecca.angela.au. I feel like my creative career is only just beginning. It isn’t really goodbye. It is an evolution. But today I bid a very fond adieu to Blue Radish. It will always hold a very special place in my heart but, as Rebecca Angela, I feel like I can truly blossom as an artist. #rebeccaangela #rebeccaangelaau #blueradish #blueradishau
