24.01.2022 Hello Gardeners, There is a wonderful show on ABC iView at the moment called The Great Australian Bee Challenge. It’s a little two part series that follows four families over 4 1/2 months keeping bees. ... It’s super interesting and informative and might be something the kids will enjoy.

24.01.2022 This is an interesting video from Our Permaculture Life: Morag Gamble about Cobblers Pegs. I didn’t know they were edible! Always keep in mind areas that may have been sprayed with herb/pesticides before foraging. What are your favourite foraged goodies? ... Drop some info below to help us all learn.

21.01.2022 One for the kids, not only for when you’ve just had your hands in the soil (just showed it to both of mine and there was a definite moment of clarity.......).

20.01.2022 Keep an eye out for these beauties! If you see one, try and take a photo and upload it to the BMSS Kitchen Garden page so we can all enjoy

19.01.2022 At first glance, I thought this was sushi. See some absolutely STUNNING caterpillars courtesy of bioGraphic: http://www.biographic.com/posts/sto/caterpillar-cameos

19.01.2022 And now for the prep garden! This little lot of gardens is absolutely flourishing! The potatoes are looking so healthy, we are excited to learn more about the signs to look for to know when they are ready. ... The herbs seem to have found their feet and are producing well and there are flowers on the nasturtiums here! Be sure to check out the photos, there are red, yellow and orange nasturtiums flowering, it will make for a lovely display over the coming weeks. There is also a mystery gardener who has planted peas of some sort and built some beautiful trellis’s from sticks and string - we don’t know who you are but thank you, they look wonderful and we hope you will see some peas soon!

19.01.2022 Check out the difference between these two swarm clusters. One is ready to move on, and the other has just settled. If we find a swarm acting like the first e...xample, it is a sure sign that it is on the verge of taking off to a location determined by their scout bees who have been out searching for a cavity suitable for their new nest. You can literally see the anticipation of the bees as they excitedly dance around on the outside of the swarm cluster; departure imminent. The second example is of a recently settled swarm, and we would normally expect a cluster like this to hang around for a while, waiting for the democratic process of finding a new home takes place. As night falls and the temperature drops, a swarm cluster will seemingly shrink, as they cluster even more tightly together to stay warm. . . . -- Reposting our content is fine, provided it is not modified. 18.01.2022 Hello Gardeners, I just found this wonderful article and had to share. It’s a lovely representation of community, sharing knowledge and creating understanding. ... https://www.theguardian.com//not-just-weeds-how-rebel-bota

18.01.2022 #OnThisDay in 1870 Granny Smith died. Granny Smith, or Maria Ann Smith, gave her name to a tart green apple that was supposedly propagated on her property in Ry...de, Sydney. She arrived in NSW with her husband, Thomas, and family in 1838 on board the 'Lady Nugent'. They bought 24 acres on the edge of the Field of Mars Common and started an orchard. http://ow.ly/DoPC50xCOQl

18.01.2022 A few photos of the prep garden taken this morning. The herbs are going great guns, the native violets seem to have found their home and the self-sown spuds are looking healthy. It’s taken some serious trial and error given the lack of sun these gardens receive but it seems there are some perfect fits!

17.01.2022 Hello Gardeners, Just popping in with a little garden update from yesterday. We headed up to do some watering at the science block and found our spring onions had been munched! The tubes were full of caterpillars and their charming waste! We gave them a trim, sent the caterpillars to a better place and have our fingers crossed for a full recovery. ... The marigolds are fully in bloom and look beautiful with their bright orange flower heads bobbing in the breeze. The nasturtiums are starting to come into their own and are producing some of the biggest leaves I’ve ever seen from them. The lemon verbena experiment was a bust. I’m going to try sticking a stalk into a jar of water and seeing if we can get some roots that way - I’ll keep you posted! No signs yet of any pea shoots. The seeds were a bit old so we’ll give them another week and see what happens. Finally, you may recall Craig Bycroft installed our very cool new water tank last year. It’s been going great guns but unfortunately the spout has become brittle in the sun and has shattered. I’ve popped a photo below, if there is someone who could help us replace that it would be appreciated - thank you! Check out the next post for a prep garden update!

15.01.2022 Garden update... Lovely morning checking out the gardens and giving them a water and some TLC. My efforts are amateur greenthumb but I feel super zen when pottering around pulling weeds and digging in the dirt. The science lab garden is home to an amazing Thai basil which has gone to seed and is a sea of purple. The rosemary is always a standout, much nicer than mine at home. There are a heap of wild bean plants of some sort growing.. The little garden near year 1 classroom...s has a lovely tomato bush growing and a heap of marigolds have sprouted. Hopefully it will be all yellow and orange flowers in a couple of months. The prep gardens have snowpeas, mint, parsley and tomatoes growing. I have thrown some coriander, lettuce and marigold seeds in.. fingers crossed with a good water (check out the new sprinkler) and some worm juice, we will see them sprouting soon. I have added a pic of the citrus in the prep garden which has never had any fruit on it.. if anyone knows about citrus trees and wants to take on a project, please adopt this poor tree! PS. Have you all seen the golden passionfruit vine in the year 2/3 playground.. love it! And so do the kids when they get lucky enough to grab one of the ground. They are delicious.

15.01.2022 Shockwaves are vibrating through the Australian beekeeping industry with an announcement by Hive and Wellness formerly Capilano limited they will resume importi...ng honey. Beekeepers are furious at the decision that is likely to have an effect on the wholesale domestic honey price. The honey price has increased since the Corporation stopped selling Allowrie brand that contained Chinese ingredients. https://www.google.com.au/a/amp.abc.net.au/article/10187628 In the announcements you can read below Hive and wellness under its new ceo Ryan d’Almeida said the imported honey will be sourced from South America and blended with some Australian honey. They new cheap honey would be sold under the brand Cloverdale and will be available at Woolworths and other supermarkets. https://mailchi.mp/hivew/decision-regarding-imported-honey Australian beekeepers, some that are recovering from bushfires and drought need all the help they can get. Please only buy 100 percent Australian honey and demand Woolworths stop selling this imported crap. Please sign the petition http://change.org/honeylabelling Please continue to support your local beekeeper you can find them on the honeymap. https://www.beethecure.com.au/honey-map-2/ Please share so consumers boycott this product and buy 100 percent Australian honey.

09.01.2022 BAG BUG ALERT Are your newly planted winter leafy greens looking great one day and like chook food the next? The problem might be Cluster caterpillars which are... a difficult pest to control as they attack such a wide range of plants. The first sign will be a white, fluffy egg mass with a horde of young caterpillars emerging a few days later. Best response is acting quickly to remove the infested leaves and feed them to the chooks. No chooks? then just drop the leaves into a bucket of very hot water. The long term strategy is more good bugs in the garden. https://greenharvest.com.au//Infor/CaterpillarControl.html Image of egg mass courtesy of A. Carmichael, QLD University of Technology See more

08.01.2022 And from the science block gardens this morning, the marigolds are in full bloom, the Thai basil has well and truly gone to seed and we planted some peas and beans. These should be looking pretty good for when the kids come back to school! It’s wonderful to see the borage has come back up (self-sown), our little bee friends will be delighted once these plants are in flower again. We also stuck a few sprigs of lemon verbena from my (Trish’s) garden in to see if they might take hold. Lemon verbena is a wonderful herb that can be used to make herbal teas, for infusions (think custards and icings) and also in salads and stir fry’s. Fingers crossed!

08.01.2022 Hello Gardeners! Better late then never, a little update from the weekend! Liz showed us some amazing golden passion fruit the kids had found creeping over the fence from a neighbour. Craig took us for a toddle through the lovely Adem’s Orchard where the citrus trees are doing their thang. And we built some trellises for the new Madagascan Beans in the science block gardens and laid some mulch. ... We’d love to know, what is your families go-to for fresh fruit and veg? 03.01.2022 It is never a good day when you find one of your queens dead on the ground outside a hive. Contrary to popular belief, it is the colony that exerts as much c...ontrol over the queen as she does over the colony and if they decide it is time for her to go, then she will have no say in the matter. During her life, the queen emits powerful pheromones that have the effect of bonding her offspring. Her pheromones are spread by contact, from bee to bee, throughout the hive, and if for some reason the hive becomes queenless, the colony will know within minutes. The queen's pheromones play another very import role in suppressing the female workers' urge to lay eggs. Therefore, the absence of a queen can result in laying workers, who can only lay unfertilised eggs. This is thought to be a last-ditch effort to save the colony and produce a new queen. Unfertilised eggs emerge as drones, and with the absences of any new females, the colony will gradually die out. While we will never know what happened, the chances are that this queen had a problem, was starting to fail or her pheromone production started to decline, resulting in her expulsion from the hive. . . . -- Reposting our content is fine, provided it is not modified.
