22.01.2022 Sad day yesterday on Maui Napili soul surfer Rob passed away from severe injuries caused by being attacked by a big tiger shark at Honolua. He was a quiet humbl...e soul surfer who literally surfed everyday no matter how big the waves waves were you can count on him being there for the dawn patrol session. 22.01.2022 UPDATE @ 4:30p: A 55 y/o male was 20 yards from shore when he was bit in the left thigh/buttock area just before 8:00 am. Wound was so high up they had diffic...ulty controlling the bleeding. He was unresponsive on shore and CPR was in progress when fire/medics arrived. He was transported by medics in critical condition. He then went into surgery and is now in stable condition. SHARK ATTACK UPDATE @ 9:37a: We have confirmed that a 55 y/o male was the victim of a shark attack at Honolua. The male was transported to MMMC by medics. No word on his condition at this time. SHARK ALERT : Report of a shark that was seen close to shore in Honolua Bay. There is a surf contest that was scheduled today and has been cancelled due to the sighting. DLNR is on scene. 08.01.2022 HYBRID LOW TO BRING POSSIBLE HEAVY RAIN & STRONG WINDS TO SE QLD & NE NSW FOR SUNDAY & MONDAY There’s been a lot of interest in this system lately, in particula...r with reference to the forecast rainfall by one model (G3) in particular. While G3 is a very good model, the amount of rainfall currently forecast by this model is substantially more than any other model so we have to consider this the worst case scenario it’s possible, but hopefully (and probably a bit more likely), it won’t be quite as bad this! We also have to remember that a lot of the forecast models have the low crossing the coastline. How often do lows cross the southern Queensland coastline in December!? That’s right not very often! So this is providing a bit of uncertainty because it’s an unusual pattern to occur so we need to keep this in mind too. However there’s no denying that the patterns are worthy of paying attention as these systems can be quite nasty at times. I’m calling this a hybrid low but there’s a case to say that it’s just an East Coast Low too. But I feel there’s some tropical characteristics to this hence calling it a hybrid but it’s semantics so if you hear it called an East Coast Low then there’s a case to argue that too. What it’s NOT is a tropical cyclone and that’s not on the cards here (even if these systems can be as intense as a weak tropical cyclone). One aspect that’s unusual about this system is the strength of the upper cold pool with 500mb temperatures dropping to -17/-18 over the Darling Downs on Saturday! I’m not sure I’ve seen them this cold in mid-December before, and that’s what’s going to be driving this system. The cold air in the upper atmosphere will induce a trough off the coastline on Saturday due to the air rising rapidly which should in turn increase the showers as the day progresses. By Sunday this upper cold pool will remain slow moving and the result will be a full low pressure system off the southern Queensland coastline. Overall the upper cold pool is expected to remain very slow moving and this is likely to be the reason that the low ends up drifting to the coastline and possibly crossing the coastline which is what drives the expected strong to gale force winds and heavy rainfall. WHERE this low moves will dictate rainfall and it’s important because these hybrid systems tend be much more intense on the southern side of the low. That means that the northwestern quarter of the low could have quite mild conditions so you can see that if the low were to cross over Brisbane, the actual more severe impacts would probably be south of the border (and a lot of people in SE QLD may be wondering what the fuss is all about). Hopefully over the next day or two we’ll get a better idea where this low may track, but expect some variation in the forecast. In a nutshell yes there’s the potential this system could be fairly nasty, but we’ll have to wait and see where things settle (so don’t panic yet!) A small shift in the low’s movement by even 50-100km could mean a big difference to the weather patterns!
