18.01.2022 'TOP 10 BOXERS OF ALL TIME'! No.07 - Pernell 'Sweet Pea' Whitaker By the time I was getting into following boxing careers (1990) Whitakers legacy was well underway. In the 1984 Los Angelas Olympics Whitaker was the US captain along side Evander Holyfield & 3 other boxers who would win medals and go on to be world champions as professionals. Whitaker won the gold medal before then turning pro in the same year. ... Much like Sugar Ray Leonard, he was lauded as being a world champion from the beginning. Within 12 months Whitaker won the IBF lightweight championship. In his next 27 fights he captured another two belts in the lightweight division, won a word championship belt in super lightweight, welterweight and super welterweight divisions. During this time he fought Haegun, McGirt (twice) Ramirez (again) Nelson, Pineda, Chavez, Vasquez, Rivera just to name a few. Whats most impressive is that he drew with Chavez who was 86-0 at the time. Many people thought Whitaker won 9/12 rounds. This was not the first time Whitaker would experience poor decisions and it would not be the last. I remember watching his fight with De La Hoya and thinking that it was too hard to score and a fair result would have been a draw. If you really want to know how good Whitaker was, watch the Hurtado fight. You gotta love a come back KO! Being a four division world champion and earning millions of dollars was difficult for Whitaker to handle and like many before him (and after), his boxing career took a back seat to drugs, partying and overspending. Reading the tributes from other great boxers to Whitaker when he died last year shows how respected he was as a fighter. This is why Pernell Sweet Pea Whitaker is one of my all time top 10 favourite boxers.

13.01.2022 'TOP 10 BOXERS OF ALL TIME'! No.08 - 'Marvelous' Marvin Hagler When Carlos Monzon gave up his undisputed middleweight title after 8 years it opened up chances for middleweight journeymen and any up and coming middleweights. Enter Marvin Hagler! A south paw with a front foot style, Hagler demonstrated that having losses early on in your career doesnt damage your chances of becoming a champion. In the 21st century, having a 0 loss record earns you more respect. This is why I... like Haglar. Like Monson before him, he reigned as middleweight champ for 7 years after the early set backs. Fighting any middleweight who would take him on including Antuofermo, Obelmeyjias, Duran Hamsho, Hearns, Mugabi and finally Sugar Ray Leonard. The fight that made me fall for Haglar was the mega-fight with Leonard. The first time I watched it I thought Leonard won in a split decision. The second time I thought Haglar won. Whats interesting about this fight is that Leonard came out of retirement to fight Haglar at middleweight, making Haglar the heavy favourite. Sniffing a victory, Hagler decided to fight orthodox rather than his natural southpaw. With Haglar losing on points and earning $18m, he hung up the gloves for an acting career in Italian films. You gotta love athletics who retire at their peak and turn their back on organisations that influence decisions. In this case Las Vegas decisions. This is why Marvelous Marvin Haglar is in my top 10. Check out the Hagler vs Leonard fight here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH1U1jC0Lgc

12.01.2022 Rocky Marciano ‘The Brockton Blockbuster’ It took Floyd Mayweather to try and beat Marciano’s record - over 60 years. I know we get obsessed with unbeaten records, but retiring a champion in the hardest weight division when there were no alphabet titles up for grabs can’t be ignored. Having Italian blood run through my veins, I do have a soft spot for Marciano. For me the soft spot is more than than that. He started his fight career at aged 23. What would his career be li...ke if discovered the sport years earlier? What’s interesting is that he only realised he could ‘blew’ after getting into a fight with an Australian in a bar in Cardiff-England. Of course he won that fight and thought he could earn some extra money prize fighting. Marciano was not a natural boxer like many I admire, so don’t look to Marciano for the ‘sweet science.’ What he lacked in subtlety he made up with heart and raw determination. This is why boxing captures the imagination of many people around the world. You can have all the talent, but if you don’t train hard and be willing to push yourself beyond your opponent, your talent only goes so far. At 5ft 10inches and 84kg, Marciano ‘punched above his weight’ in the hardest division. With short left hooks and uppercuts he knocked out his first 11 opponents in his debut year - 1948. Marciano idolised Joe Louis and he reluctantly took a fight with him after Louis made a comeback winning 8 fights in succession. Marciano was shattered to end Louis’ career by stopping him the eighth round. One of the best and shortest right crosses you will ever see was against Jersey Joe Walcott. Marciano was on the canvas in round one and that raw determination cut through Walcott’s beautiful boxing. After coming back on the judges score cards, Marciano knocked Walcott out thus cemented his legendary status. His fights with Ezzard Charlies were brutal. In their first fight both fighters were cut badly, but with his youth and ruggedness, Marciano finally putting Charles back in his place. The second fight was just as brutal. Marciano’s nose was split in two and his corner pleaded with the referee to let him continue. With another cut above his eye, Marciano felt he would not be allowed to continue so he threw everything at Charles and he was counted out in round eight. In Marciano’s final fight he took on the legend Archie Moore. Gate takings were $2m with 61,574 fights fans lining up to watch an entertaining fight. With Marciano being dropped in round two he fought back to stop Moore in the eighth. Marciano subsequently retired despite big money offers to come out of retirement. When a computer compared him in a ‘dream fight’ with Ali, he won that fight as well. Marciano died in a plane crash in 1969 the day before his 46th birthday. 49 fights 43 knockouts and 7 championship wins. That’s why Rocky Marciano is in my top 10 boxers.

09.01.2022 Brandon's 'TOP 10 BOXERS OF ALL TIME'! #9 The Brown Bomber - Joe Louis Again being similar Bobby Dunnes, I was a huge fan of Joe Louis' style! With a fluent left jab and left hook to match, Louis is another example of a good short puncher with a traditional catching style defence, allowing him to be super accurate. ... Louis's appeal went beyond the ring though. When I was at University I wrote a 5,000 word essay comparing Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali. Not so much their boxing careers but their contribution to African American civil rights and how the America public reacted to them. I wont bore you with an American history lesson, but it must be noted that 'The Brown Bomber' served in the United States Army and entertained the troops with over 96 exhibition fights between 1942-44. Although he didnt see combat, he entertained over 2 million troops and donated $100,000 to the armed services. Now you see how comparing him to Ali who refused to go to Vietnam war becomes interesting. Louis ripped through 20 heavyweight opponents in his first year as a professional, before winning the heavyweight championship from Jim Braddock. He sustained his first loss to Max Schmeling in 1936. This was devastating to America and Louis because it was a symbolic boxing match between the Allies and Nazi Germany. Hitler smugly watched on as Schmeling knocked out Louis. American was shocked!! Two years later before the start of WWII Louis knocked out Schmeling in a rematch. Louis defended his word title 25 times. Retiring in 1948 as champion with 59 fights and only 1 loss. Due to financial reasons Louis came out of retirement and had another 10 fights losing to world champions Ezzard Charles and Rocky Marciano. I am fascinated with athletes who have a break in their career and fans miss them in their prime. This is why the Brown Bomber is one of my top 10 favourite boxers. I paid tribute to Louis in 2013 where he is buried at Arlington Cemetery. Check out some of his highlights HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7Bl7ui9vqk

06.01.2022 Brandon's 'TOP 10 BOXERS OF ALL TIME'! #10 Sugar Ray Robinson It's no surprise to hear I am a big fan of Robinson's style, as it is quite similar to Bobby Dunnes. He was a great short puncher, coupled with a beautiful left hook! ... With a ridiculous record, Robinson had 202 career fights, losing only 19 of those, with majority coming in his later years. He won his first 40 fights before losing his 41st fight to Jake LaMotta (Raging Bull). Robinson then went on to win his next 91 fights!! One of the most intriguing things I found with Robinson was a dream he had prior to a fight with Jimmy Doyle. Robinson dreamt that he killed Jimmy Doyle in his first title defence. This dream became a reality when the next night he hit Doyle with his signature left hook. Doyle never got back on his feet and died the next day. Robinson was devastated and what many people dont know is that he paid Doyles parents $50 per month for 10 years. An extremely skilled and successful fighter, mixed with being a good human, is why Robinson sits at #10! Check out some of his highlights HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5uOuFIYAec

05.01.2022 When you think of the great middleweights you tend to think of the golden era of the 50s, and legends such as Robinson, LaMotta, Zane, Graziano, Fullmer and Basillio - the list seems endless. Or maybe you preferred the 80s with The Fabulous Four of Leonard, Hearns, Hagler and Duran. Younger fight fans might admire Bernard Hopkins, GGG or Canelo Alvarez. But one man, one mean mofo from Argentina had a record that compares favourably to anyones. That man was Carlos Roque... Monzón. Monzón was born into poverty and violence on the mean streets of Santa Fé, as one of 12 siblings - but this tough upbringing, amazing talent, work rate and a mean streak made him not only one of the greatest middleweights the fight game has ever seen, but also pound-for-pound one of the greatest boxers of all time. He fought in an upright stance and at nearly 6 he was tall, rangy with a physique like barbed wire, with great stamina and devastating punching power. To watch him fight was to be convinced that only a stiff left and a straight right was required to make it in the fight game. He won the undisputed unified and lineal world middleweight championship of the world in Rome in 1970 by defeating the Italian champion Nino Benvenuti, who foolishly questioned the sexuality of the extraordinarily macho Monzón at the weigh in; touching him playfully on the backside. Monzóns response? Tonight - I kill you. In the 12th round only the referees intervention kept the new champ from fulfilling his promise. As champ he defended his title 14 times over 7 years against fighters of the quality of Emile Griffiths (twice), José Nápoles, Bad Bennie Briscoe and in his last 2 fights he twice out pointed the great Colombian middleweight Rodrigo Valdéz. Monzón retired unconquered in 1977 whilst still on top. He was violent in and out of the ring and was eventually sentenced to 11 years for killing his wife - not a great role model - but inside the ring one of the greatest exponents of the sweet science the middleweight division has ever seen.
05.01.2022 Now aiming to incorporate the range of skills you have learned from our previous videos, Brandon introduces a cone drill that he and other gym trainers like to use around the gym! Catch the full video: https://bit.ly/3fcO2ix

05.01.2022 The floor to ceiling is one of the hardest pieces of equipment to work on as it exposes over punching. So the best way to begin learning is to keep your distance and begin with straight punches before introducing hooks and upper cuts as your confidence grows!

01.01.2022 Manny Pacquiao On Dec 4, 1998 Thai WBC flyweight and lineal world champion Chatchai Sasakul put his title on the line against an almost unknown skinny teenager from the Philippines. It was a terrible mistake. Sasakul was no bum. When he retired in 2008 he had an impressive 65-4 record with 40 of his wins coming by way of the short route. But that night in front of his stunned home crowd in Bangkok, the champ didnt know he was fighting a man who would go on to become pound-fo...r-pound one of the greatest fighters the sweet science has ever seen; arguably the greatest southpaw of all time. In the 8th round, while ahead on all 3 judges score cards, Emmanuel Manny Pacquiao knocked out Sasakul, and in the process showed the world for the first time the trademark qualities that would take the 21st century by storm - almost unmatchable speed and power. Pacquiaos greatness requires no interpretation, no context, no analysis. His preeminence is amply illustrated by simply listing his achievements. Think about this: The only 8 division champion in the history of boxing 12 major world titles The first boxer to win the lineal world championship in 5 different weight classes The first fighter to win major world titles in 4 of the 8 glamour divisions - fly, feather, light and welterweight. The only fighter to hold world championships across 4 decades from the 90s through to the 2020s. With a record of 62 wins (39 by KO) 7 losses and 2 draws, no one could ever accuse him of bolstering his record by fighting chumps or dodging dangerous fighters. Over the course of his career he defeated 22 world champions. Consider some of these names he vanquished: Marco Antonio Barrera, (twice) Érik Morales, Juan Manuel Márquez (twice) Oscar De La Hoja, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito, Shane Mosley, Tim Bradley (twice), Jessie Vargas, Adrien Broner, and when aged 40 he defeated Keith Therman in July 2019 for the WBA super middleweight title, he became the oldest world welterweight champion and the first 4 Time welterweight world champion. His 4 fights with Juan Manuel Márquez were everything for a boxing enthusiast to love. A skilful, sweet and savage combination of boxing and brawling, with more than a little controversy thrown in to boot. If you asked me, I could write a book, but let me end this love letter to Pacquiao with this simple observation. He achieved greatness without every being boring - he is 168 cm of almost unmatchable speed and power.
