25.01.2022 Were pleased to give you a sneak peak of the work our students are doing with talented artist, Jackson Harvey, and the City of Subiaco to brighten the Haydn Bunton Underpass. Students have been learning new art skills and worked together to design the mural. We look forward to sharing the finished product.

24.01.2022 Selective Art Mixed Media Painting To complement the existing mural project with Jackson Harvey, the Selective Art students have been developing their painting skills, with a focus on colour mixing and theory. They have examined the contemporary Aboriginal artist Melanie Hava closely, in particular her use of line, pattern and shape. Students then experimented with a range of ideas in the inquiry process, leading them into the unpredictability of acrylic pouring. These mixed media paintings are vibrant and encompass the beauty that Melaine Hava captures in her artwork.

21.01.2022 Last term students had the opportunity to participate in the Golden Pen writing award. Our writing on Mueller Park fit the theme of the competition perfectly and quite a few students from Bob Hawke College joined more than 260 students from across WA to enter their work. Three esteemed judges read the entries, including Ursula Dubosarsky, the current Australian Childrens Literature Laureate and author of our shared novel from last term The Golden Day, as well as local author Nadia King and the award-winning Will Kostakis. We are proud and excited to announce that Olivia Fechners wonderful piece The Eye won the Junior Category! You can read Livs work and the judges comments here (https://www.scribblersfestival.com.au//winners-announced-t) as well as the other winning pieces. An amazing achievement, Liv!

13.01.2022 First Day on Subiaco Oval We have eagerly awaited the Stage 3 Covid -19 relaxation of restrictions which has enabled all of our students to be on the oval at the same time. Yesterday afternoon we ventured as a College community on to the hallowed turf together. We managed to share a little of the history of the oval, and to begin to appreciate how lucky we are to have use of the space as part of the Bob Hawke College experience.... Physical Education lessons commence on the oval next week, and we look forward to our Athletics Carnival filling the venue in Term 3. We would like to share with you our first steps on Subiaco Oval as a College, and look forward to sharing the space with the community over the coming years.

11.01.2022 Student Art Project - Haydn Bunton Underpass The City of Subiaco has provided the College with an exciting opportunity, requesting our students contribute to the repainting of the Haydn Bunton Underpass, which is used by many in the local community. I am pleased to announce that our Selective Art students have been elected for this project, which will be facilitated by the College, as well as a commissioned mural artist. Were privileged to be working with Jackson Harvey, a... talented local artist. You can read more about Jacksons passion on his website https://jacksonharvey.com.au/artistbio Today, students learned a range of techniques using aerosol paints in preparation for the project and are now working on ideas and concepts for the final mural. We look forward to seeing the project evolve and will keep you posted on progress.

Titled Building On Strength in Uncertain Times: In This Together, the video provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander views about these challenging times from both a system-level and Aboriginal perspective. The video is narrated by the Departments Elders in Residence and senior Aboriginal staff. These messages are relevant to all school communities and highlight the 2020 National Reconciliation Week theme In This Together which resonates at this time, as it reminds us whether in a crisis or in reconciliation, we are all in this together.

06.01.2022 Visual Arts Ceramics In Visual Arts for Term Two, students examined the artworks of Olivia Lomenech Gill, who is well known for bringing J.K Rowlings, Fantastic Beasts to life. Firstly, the Year 7s conducted an analysis of her artwork and then progressed to the inquiry stage of brainstorming, using a digital platform called Pixlr X. Looking at Olivia Lomenech Gills illustrated book for inspiration, students utilised mixed media techniques to develop their favourite beasts, which consisted of three to four different animals/creatures combined. Students then enjoyed the clay process by transforming their 2 dimensional artwork into an impressive 3 dimensional ceramic sculpture.
