23.01.2022 GETTING BACK TO HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING Building your exercise routine gradually is key. HIIT (High Intensity training) improves cardiometabolic risk factors...What does this mean...?... Batacan et. al. 2017 found that at least 12 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) improved risk factors: Waist circumference % body fat Resting heart rate Systolic blood pressure Diastolic blood pressure The above were improved in an overweight and obese population group, however HIIT is relevant for us all and we all need to be particularly careful at present with impacts to our exercise routines and trying to return to exercising, the gym and fitness classes. Although there are many benefits to HIIT we must take into consideration that we are doing exercise for long term gains. So if you are moving off the couch and into a new routine HIIT is something to build to not start with. Remember injury is a major cause for people to give up and these injuries often result from poor load management. What is poor load management? Getting into high intensity interval training too quickly. This is a common question we're asked - as it's a widely-held belief amongst many people that clocking up the km's sets up their joints for arthritis down the track. So, it's time for some myth busting!... In fact, there's a huge amount of research out there showing NO link between running and the development of arthritis (& we've listed some here!). Indeed, there's even some research to suggest that runners were actually less likely to have arthritis than non-runners, & had better joint health as they aged. Our joints & cartilage are living structures, and need a certain amount of load & activity to keep them strong and in good repair - and running seems to tick those boxes. Now, running an ultra-marathon every day will probably tip the balance towards being excessive - but for most of us, getting out & going for a run regularly is likely to be a good thing rather than a bad thing for our long-term joint health.
