22.01.2022 The breath is one of the most accessible tools we have for calming our bodies down but we're not often taught how to use it correctly. The blog below has some great tips on how to use your breath to manage feelings of anxiety and stress.

21.01.2022 Meet Cody! If Cody looks familiar to you, it's probably because you've seen her smiling face greeting you at the reception desk for the past 2 years. She's also a born and bred Darwinite (I know, what a rare breed, and we have 2 of them! It probably explains a lot.) Cody is our NDIS guru and generally our fall back to almost anything admin related. She often takes a hold of organising our diaries and making sure we're in the right place at the right time, which is no mean fe...at when your have 7 rowdy practitioners to sort out. Growing up in Darwin, you can always count on Cody to spin a good local yarn, have a hidden stash of all the good snacks, and, being local, naturally she's never been to Kakadu (I KNOW, RIGHT?!). You can always count on Cody to be there for whatever you need - travel chats, road trips, deep chats and work in general, even if she hasn’t embraced our love for a lunchtime workout routine...yet. One thing we can’t count on Cody for? Spicy food. She has NO back bone.

14.01.2022 Pain is a complex integration of many components, especially in the absence of immediate trauma or injury where it can lead to confusion and frustration. Helping people understand their pain and providing reassurance and confidence in the body is the first step to improving outcomes. When you understand your pain, and have confidence in your body you can begin to navigate away from injury and begin to explore solutions. It's a natural position of human function to shy away fr...om pain when it comes to movement. This has previously led to a mostly "hands on" approach with physiotherapy through manual therapy techniques such as massage, moving the focus away from rehabilitation. The instant gratification received through manual therapy can lull patients into the false sense of security that a physiotherapist can "fix" them, rather than help them. When we focus on rehabilitation through movement and education, we give the healing power back to the individual, allowing them to continue improving their condition long after they have walked out of the clinic. The below imagine has some great indicators of how a therapist can work with and educate individuals, approaching treatment from all areas, not just manual therapy. Has pain been holding you back from exercise? Make an appointment with a Physiotherapist or an Exercise Physiologist and find out how we can help you, help you. Call us on (08) 8981 2886.

14.01.2022 Happy Hump Day! How has your exercise been this week? Have you been kicking goals or have you found it hard to have motivation? It can be hard to get moving, especially if you've not done exercise for a while. It's common to feel uncomfortable, nervous or anxious and overwhelmed when planning to make a return to exercise. ... Some days, it feels easier to leave it until tomorrow (okay, most days). Have you ever heard the phrase tomorrow never comes? If you continue to wait until the next day, week, month for a clean slate, you'll never achieve your goals. Here are some ideas to start your journey: Start small! Often we aim to do too much all at once, leaving us feeling disappointed because we've been unable to reach our goals. Something is better than nothing. Even 15 minutes of movement has been shown to improve our overall health and boost our mood. Don't overthink it. Put on your shoes and go. GET HELP! See a professional to help you stay accountable, set some goals and work in a safe and achievable manner. Once you start, you'll notice improvements in energy, mood and strength which will motivate and inspire you to keep going. If not now, when?

11.01.2022 Consistency is key When we say exercise, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Sweat, sore muscles, out of breath, going hard, feeling exhausted? Maybe you love smashing a hard work out, or you’re the other end of the scale and only do the bare minimum required, or none at all? What we aim to do is help you find movement that you ...enjoy so you can do it over an extended period of time to reap the benefits. Often we view exercise as a chore because we haven't found what it is we enjoy doing. Getting your daily movement in is much easier to prioritise when it's fun. How will you move today?

09.01.2022 Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease in which brain cells are destroyed causing a loss of cognitive, memory and physical function. AD mostly affects older people, and is the leading cause of dementia. We do not completely understand the cause of Alzheimer's disease, however we do know that it shares similar risk factors with heart disease, which is why being physically active is important. "Exercise can benefit people who already show signs of AD by improv...ing their quality of life, slowing down the disease progression, and improving physical function and health. In addition, social interaction and cognitively stimulating environments slow disease progression." - Exercise is medicine. People who are physically active have a lower risk of developing AD than those who are inactive. As well as improving cognitive ability, exercise also slows or reverses muscle deterioration, improves mood and depression symptoms and lessens behavioural problems in people with advanced disease. Consult an Exercise Physiologist to help you get started.

09.01.2022 The first step towards reducing your pain is to understand and make sense of your pain. This reduces anxiety and threat and is the foundation for making positive changes to your daily life that can reduce pain. Therapists that understand and can explain pain can be very helpful. Exercise is the most commonly used treatment for Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain, and while it can be very helpful in restoring confidence, movement and function, it can also help with restoring normal... brain and nervous system pain processing. We made this video whilst the NT was under strict COVID restrictions, but we still think it’s pretty fun to play anyway! Give it a go and tell us your time! Even better, film it and tag us. Perhaps we’ll even incorporate it into some of our programs to improve coordination. No? Just an idea

08.01.2022 Saturday was World Mental Health Day. There’s not denying the profoundly positive impacts exercise has on mental illness. It can help reduced symptoms of depression, anxiety, ADHD, low self-esteem and social withdrawal. Listen to Australian Olympian Libby Hackett talk about using movement to improve your mental health.

08.01.2022 The positives of exercise cascade into numerous health benefits including preventing chronic illness and heart disease, lowering blood pressure and improving sleep. Exercise is also a powerful tool in combating depression! While high-intensity exercise provides an immediate endorphin release, for most, consistent low-intensity exercise is the most beneficial approach. This is due to the new connections made in the brain during this form of exercise which improves brain functi...on, helping us feel better. It's also a more achievable approach for most, especially those who are new to exercising. Exercise supports nerve cell growth in the hippocampus, the area of the brain that regulates mood and can help prevent depression. It's okay to ask for help, so if you're trying to get started and require some guidance, book in with one of our Accredited Exercise Physiologists on (08) 8981 2886.
