24.01.2022 There are a variety of factors that contribute to chronic or recurrent injuries. A breakdown in the management of any of the factors pictured can potentially lead to reoccurrence of previous injuries. Following a comprehensive verbal and physical examination, your physiotherapist will identify key areas for correction, and implement an individualized treatment management plan. 24.01.2022 Is my MRI scan normal ? A systematic review was conducted in 2015 to investigate spinal degenerative changes found in individuals without back pain. A total of 3110 individuals were included in the investigation, ages ranging from 20-80 years old. The Results ... Disc Degeneration was 37% prevalent in those aged 20 and increased to 96% by age 80. Disc bulges were 30% prevalent in patients aged 20 and increased to 84% by age 80. Disc protrusions were 29% prevalent in patients aged 20 and increased to 43% by age 80. Disc height loss was 24% prevalent in participants aged 20 and increased to 84% by age 80. What does this all mean MRI technology is highly sensitive and will pick up a lot of findings! However, these findings are not necessarily associated with the severity or even the presence of your back pain. Always talk to your health professional to make sure that your MRI findings correlate with your current symptoms. *Brinjiki W, Luetmer PH, Comstock B, Bresnahan BW, Chen LE, Deyo RA, et al. 21.01.2022 'Referred pain' Sometimes you can have a problem in one area , but you feel the pain somewhere else. People with pain going down their leg often wonder if they have a pinched nerve. It is much more common (in my experience) that something else is causing that pain, such as a muscle.... The story might go something like this... You've overused a muscle due to a new exercise regime, so it starts playing up and sends pain down your leg. So, your physio conducts an assessment... probably ends up pressing on something that reproduces your leg pain, identifying the source of the problem. So, firstly, we treat the muscle that's playing up, with massage or dry needling for example. Usually this type of treatment is for symptomatic relief. Secondly, we need to make sure it doesnt happen again. This usually involves exercise because a strong and flexible muscle will be less prone to injury.

20.01.2022 Have you got jaw problem? Physiotherapists can treat that. Firstly, you need to know that there are a LOT of symptoms that may be associated with jaw dysfunction. So, if you see a physio for treatment, it is worth discussing any symptoms that you have been experiencing, even if you're unsure how it could relate to a jaw problem. Secondly, your resting jaw position should be as follows:... -Lips together -Teeth apart -Tip of the tongue resting on the roof of the mouth, just behind the front teeth Think of this as posture for your jaw. It should be relaxed, not forced. Picture credit: https://www.markharrisdds.com/treatments/tmj-tmd/

19.01.2022 Physiotherapists commonly deal with referred pain. That is, when you have an injury in one region, but feel pain somewhere else. For example, you might have an irritated joint in your lower back, but feel pain in your leg. This happens because nerves from your back and leg eventually converge, so their signals travel along the same pathway towards the brain.... That's why your brain will sometimes interpret these signals incorrectly. Further examples include how the upper neck can give you a headache, and hip arthritis can give you knee pain. Please note that this concept is not the same thing as a 'pinched nerve' or 'sciatica', etc. This video offers a more in-depth explanation, but with a bit of jargon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIJMfNQ1aU4

19.01.2022 Balance training must be challenging if you are to see any improvement. A wobble disc is a tool commonly used by physiotherapists to increase the difficulty of balance exercises. ...they can also be rather fun.

18.01.2022 Finding that your progress has plateaued or you that you are fatiguing more quickly during training? Individuals who regularly train at high intensities, not allowing adequate time for recovery are at risk of overtraining. While true overtraining is rare in athletes not participating in elite sports, there is still a risk of amateur and semi-elite athletes pushing themselves into the overreaching stage of the continuum. Negative performance effects of overreaching typically r...esolve in days-weeks, however can last up to months. Management of load is the key to reduce the risk of overtraining, with periodisation and progressive overload important for recovery and to improve performance. 16.01.2022 Osteoarthritis (OA) - some key points: 1. There is growing evidence to support physiotherapy and exercise as treatment options for OA 2. Physiotherapy/exercise should be the first line of treatment, not opioids or surgery... 3. Surgery (e.g. a knee replacement) is not a silver bullet solution If you know somebody that is suffering from osteoarthritis, spread the word that physiotherapy can help them. 16.01.2022 Discussions regarding continence and sexual health can be a challenging task. This is an important subject as we know 1/3 women leak urine, and that physiotherapy is an effective front line treatment. 13.01.2022 Nerve exercises! Nerves are long, dynamic structures that can slide, stretch and compress all through the body. A healthy nerve can tolerate this. If you have tense or sensitive nerves, then it can cause pain. You may need to do specific exercises that target the nerve.... 08.01.2022 Ever wondered why your neck hurts if you spend a lot of time looking down at your phone? Informally, it's what we call a "text neck". Holding your head forward for a prolonged period of time causes excessive amounts of tension through your neck muscles and across your shoulders. This can lead to short term or long term neck, shoulder, upper back, headache or jaw pain and can also lead to kyphosis which is an increased curve in your upper back. Now days most of us spend hours... on our mobile devices both for work and socially. The weight of your head dramatically increases when you lean forward with approximately 6 times the force being generated, which can equal to a 20+ kg weight sitting on your neck. Our necks were not designed to load this way and so it can lead to postural changes , reduced circulation to those muscles, lactic acid accumulation and increased activity in the muscles causing them to shorten and tense. If you spend a lot of time on your phone, at your desk or just have poor posture, it is worth seeing your physio. Also, the book below, which can be found online, provides a clear and easy explanation about what causes neck tightness as well as what stretches are best.

02.01.2022 FAQ: "When a physio cracks my back, what actually causes that sound?" The short answer is: cavitation. The human body is a noisy thing can click, pop and crunch for all sorts of reasons. It's generally only a problem if it hurts.... Here, I'm specifically talking about the 'popping' sound that you might get when receiving hands-on treatment (manual therapy). Most joints are surrounded by a capsule that is filled with fluid. Basically, if you stretch a joint enough, it lowers the pressure in the fluid and forms a bubble, which will quickly dissolve again. The aim of manual therapy is to help you feel better and move better. The pop isn't the goal, it's a byproduct, albeit a satisfying one.
