24.01.2022 Lisa is working with exercise physiologist, Maddie, to manage the symptoms of her multiple sclerosis (MS). When nerve fibres are damaged from MS, your brain can’t effectively send your muscles the signals they need to flex or contract. As a result, you may not be able to use certain muscles properly. Some people with MS also find that their muscles tire more easily. Strength training and cardio exercises with a physical therapist can help combat muscle weakness and give peopl...e with MS more energy to they go about their daily tasks. Engaging a physical therapist is important, because they understand the specific exercise requirements for people living with chronic conditions such as MS. They can develop an exercise program that meets your ability level and accommodate any limitations you may have.

10.01.2022 As a male, it can be difficult talking about your problems below the belt. Movember is all about being proactive and bringing awareness to men’s health. In Australia, prostate cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in men and takes 3,500 lives every year. Alarmingly, more men die from prostate cancer than women from breast cancer. Being alert and proactive about your health is crucial for combating prostate cancer. Routine tests and early detection helps ensure a...ppropriate measures are taken. In fact, there are often no symptoms during its early stages. Health professionals recommend that all men over the ages of 50 have a chat with their GP about their prostate health. Men with a family history or African/Caribbean descent are at higher risks and therefore should consider this at 45. Changes to your body are normal as you approach your twilight years. Although, there are particular symptoms of prostate cancer that you need to be aware of. Examples of these signs include: Increased frequency of urination Painful ejaculation Blood in urine and semen Difficulty urinating Relentless back, hip and thigh pain. Movember is a month where we can stop the premature death of men all over the world. Being proactive about your prostate health is so vital for preventing escalation and maintaining your health. You too can help Movember’s cause by sharing this post or tagging a mate to spread this message. Prevention is always better than cure.

08.01.2022 Humpday workout inspiration brought to you by our beautiful patient, Kim, working with EP Maddie to reduce symptoms associated with Fibromyalgia, a condition which causes widespread muscle pain and tenderness, fatigue and often altered sleep, memory and mood. In treating those with fibromyalgia, we aim to reduce the effects of inactivity on long term health, by keeping patients moving in safe and comfortable way. This is where light exercises such as Pilates, yoga or hydrotherapy can be beneficial in reducing muscle stiffness and pain, whilst developing strength safely and preventing co-morbidites
06.01.2022 Merry Christmas from everyone at BodySmart Health!
04.01.2022 Australian netballer and mum-to-be, Gretel Tippet, and Daniel Rich from the Brisbane Lions, are both Reformer Pilates enthusiasts, and for good reason! In recent years, Reformer Pilates has turned into a popular addition to traditional training programs for professional athletes and weekend warriors alike. This physical and mental practice helps achieve the balance of strength between the supporting or stabilising muscles, and the more dynamic or moving muscles. As such,... it teaches your body to generate power from the right muscles and develops strength through the full length of the muscle. So, why is this so important for athletes? It all has to do with movement patterns. As the body’s movement patterns improve, tightness and stiffness decrease allowing you to become more efficient at moving. This then leads to an increase in stamina, less muscle fatigue and a decreased risk of injury. The result: Superior performance. The mental focus that Reformer Pilates requires also trains professional athletes to remain focused during stressful situations, such as during a big game.
03.01.2022 As most of us head back to work after some much needed R&R, we may find postural pain creeps back in if we’re spending a lot of time sitting at a desk. Ensuring we’re keeping up with our postural focused exercise can be a great way to develop the endurance needed to maintain better posture for longer periods of time, reducing the risk of pain and injury associated with poor sitting postures. All classes maintain a balanced prescription of Exercise, ensuring we’re working to strengthen postural stabilisers, and open up through stiff and tight areas, to help give you the beautiful pain free posture your body deserves!
03.01.2022 So you’ve just fallen pregnant with your first Bub and you’re wondering what this means for the do’s and dont’s of exercise going forward. Well firstly, congratulations!! It’s such an exciting and special time, but to ensure the safety of both you and Bub, there are a few things we need to be careful of as we progress in the prenatal period.. 1. As a general rule, from 12 weeks onwards we avoid heavy abdominal and adductor (inner thigh) work and stretching. That means no more sit ups, crunches, planks, tabletop, and standing side splits 2. Gentle oblique work, given good control is able to be achieved with nil discomfort is generally perfectly ok up until the end of the 2nd trimester. 3. From the start of third trimester, abdominal work is contraindicated, and is limited to core stability (think bird dogs) and deep core activation
