22.01.2022 Wow! Thank you so much for your kind support Liisa

20.01.2022 Laughing Kookaburras are one of the most common species to come into care at Bohollow. Our Kookaburra flight enclosure is always occupied by patients and it always wonderful to see them get back out there in the wild where they belong. The main reason they come into care is due to being hit by vehicles on our roads. Kookaburras use a sit, wait, watch and dive tactic to catch their prey, crushing it with their impressive bills and swallowing whole. If a prey item is a little o...n the large size, they carry it back to a perch and smack it against the timber or whatever they are sitting on to break it up into smaller pieces or break bones enabling it easier to consume. They are formidable hunters and can take lizards, small birds and also quite large snakes! Their flight is very direct and apart from changing their elevation in flight, they are not the best maneuverers in the air, therefore once on a flight path across a road, they seldom deviate. Their watch and wait tactic also sees them using powerlines, fence posts and roadside trees as a vantage point to hunt, which also puts them in danger of vehicle collisions. Kookaburras are highly territorial, hang out in family groups and will attack other kookaburras marauding in their home range. This is one of the reasons why we need to know exactly where a critter is found. Not all species are territorial and some are nomadic but in the case of the Kookaburra, it can mean life or death if we release it in the wrong spot. Territories can be close together, particularly in urban environments, borders can be shared so it is critical for a pretty precise location for release. All these Kookaburras spent varying times at Bohollow recovering from their injuries and all were happy to get back to their territories to continue family life. We cover many miles for rescue but as you can see by the locations of these releases, we also cover many miles for releases. Fuel costs are a continued expense which takes up a lot of our resources. Thank you to all the kind people who picked these birds up when they were in trouble and called us for help. It really is a team effort. Without the people who care and who are willing to stop and either pick up or report a critter in trouble, they would never reach the shelter and in turn, never get their second chance and go on to return to their wild homes. 19.01.2022 Tanya and I will be here tomorrow afternoon. GVEG are our local environmental group and the event is open to all ages and free

18.01.2022 Olivia has put one of her artworks up for auction and kindly wishes for the proceeds to go towards Bollow. Thank you so much Liv for your support of our work

18.01.2022 We specialise in entanglement cases at Bohollow and every rescue is different. Often when we are called, several people have already been called and have not been able to get the bird down. This means that by the time we arrive, they may have been stuck for many hours and sometimes even days. This poor female magpie had been stuck in fishing line in this branch overhanging the lake at Nagambie at least all day as it was late afternoon when I received the call and by the time...Continue reading

17.01.2022 I attended the rescue of this little fellow. The male Squirrel Glider had a puncture mark in his belly from a barb and also a tear in his gliding membrane. After some time in care with Deb at our Kotupna shelter his wounds healed and was gliding well so was able to be released back in the gardens last week. We currently have a Tawny Frogmouth and a Kookaburra recovering from barbed wire injuries with me at our Bunbartha shelter. Recently I attended 3 separate cases of Grey h...eaded Flying Foxes caught on barbed wire, a Tawny Frogmouth and a Southern Boobook..none of these poor critters survived the ordeal and suffered pain, suffering and horrendous injury. If you have any barbed wire on your property, please consider whether it is really necessary and consider removing it. It really can save lives and eliminate a lot of pain and suffering. PLEASE SAY NO TO BARBED WIRE See more

17.01.2022 While Autumn sees the end of the main bird breeding season, some of our other natives are still quite busy and our native Brushtail Possum is one of them. Each year Bohollow receives many calls about possums in roof and wall cavities which people would like us to remove. This time of year is major peak time for this species to breed, so often people become more privy to their presence due to the squabbling and fighting between possums which can cause quite a racket. Brushtail...Continue reading

17.01.2022 This is today folks!!!! Tanya and I will be at the Rushworth Spring Garden Festival today, Saturday 26th October at the Shire Hall for a special environmental presentation from 1pm to 3pm. Come along to learn about our local wildlife, what we can do locally to help them out and get up close and personal to our critters to discover just how truly amazing our local species are.

16.01.2022 Fantastic work Kirsty

16.01.2022 How appropriate for this memory to spring up today! This morning we released the first Wood Ducklings for the season who came to Bohollow as orphans. We usually raise anywhere from 60 to 100 ducklings at Bohollow each season. This video was taken 5 years ago today and things have changed a little. We now have a rehabilitation dam where these young ducks are able to find their feet..and their wings..before they head off to make their way in the big, wide world on their own.

14.01.2022 It has taken me awhile to get next year's Bohollow calendar together but I finally got it to our printers yesterday! We should have calendars sometime next week to distribute to the veterinary clinics who sell them and to begin sending out any which are ordered. Both Deb and I have had many enquiries as to when they will be available and I apologise for being so late this year. I began to put it together in September, baby bird season began in August and the crazy season for... baby birds went off with a bang so it got put to the side to enable me to attend the many rescues and patients who have needed us. Deb and I and all the critters at Bohollow would like to give a big shout out and heartfelt thank you for all the kind hearted people who have donated towards our wildlife work and those who continue to donate, your help keeps our doors open and enables us to continue to maintain our 24/7 rescue service for our wildlife. Your help really does make a difference FarrierVet in Lancaster, Kialla Veterinary Clinic, Shepparton Veterinary Clinic, GV Vets, Kyabram Veterinary Clinic and Echuca Moama Veterinary Clinic will all be stocking our Bohollow 2021 Calendar. You can also order them by messaging or calling us. They make a great practical gift for Christmas :) Calendars are $20 each plus postage if you require us to post, I am not sure on postage price yet as Deb usually does the mail outs and we haven't checked this year's mailing price but it's usually only an extra few dollars to post. All photography is my own of both wildlife at Bohollow or in the wild locally and every cent of profit goes directly back into operating our two Bohollow shelters and 24/7 rescue service. Thank you all for your support See more

13.01.2022 Bohollow gets called to help out many kangaroos each year. Many are hit by vehicles or find themselves caught up in fences but we also get a number of roos and wallabies who find themselves stuck in the middle of the concrete jungles of our rural towns. The main towns we are called to help with these town cases are Shepparton, Mooroopna and Echuca, our largest rural towns in this area. We have seen an increasing amount of roos and wallabies in urban yards, streets and town ro...Continue reading

12.01.2022 A massive thank you to Olivia Mitchell for generously donating proceeds from her artwork to Bohollow. I have attended a couple of rescues on her property and have seen Liv's artwork firsthand, she creates beautiful work

11.01.2022 We will be in Wangaratta tomorrow from 3pm to 8pm at the GoTafe campus with our local reptiles. See one of our reptile talks at 5pm, 6pm and 7pm or just drop by to have a close encounter with our friendly reptiles :)

11.01.2022 Both Deb and I are flat out with little critters this time of year and we are really struggling to keep up with feed costs as well as the fuel costs for we are spending a lot of time on the road attending rescues. Tanya has kindly put this up for us...every little bit helps and we thank all who donate form the bottom of our hearts, past, present and ongoing as we certainly couldn't keep our doors open without you.

11.01.2022 It is not always native animals who require our help. Sometimes when they need us, we come to the aid of domestic animals and this was the case for Quacker Duck. Quacker Duck was given her name by Brendon. Brendon lives along the Murray at a camping area and about 12 months ago Quacker turned up in the river from a nearby farm, joining the native ducks and coming in for food a couple of times a day. A week before this rescue took place Quacker appeared with an arrow stuck rig...Continue reading

08.01.2022 Deb, myself and all the critters spending Christmas at Bohollow wish you all a safe and merry Christmas

07.01.2022 Imagine if Australia's largest modern day marsupial predators where still alive. What a marvelous sight they would be!! Today we are seeing a rapid decline in s...pecies diversity. Today the extinction rate is 1,000 times higher than natural background rates. Today we are experiencing such high rates of extinction due to human impact. The earth has undergone mass extinctions before, but these were caused by natural disasters. Today we are the cause! And we are not immune! But it is not too late. We still have time, but it is running out!! 06.01.2022 Despite the dismal weather, our friendly reptiles managed to brighten the day for those who visited us at the Wangaratta campus of GoTafe yesterday at the open ...day. It doesn't matter what age you are, getting up close to native creatures and learning about them brings understanding, respect and in turn, the passion to protect. See more

05.01.2022 Well it has taken me awhile to get it together, but I finally dropped next year's Bohollow calendar to our printers yesterday! We have had many enquiries as to when our calendar will be available and I apologise for being so late this year! I began the task in September, baby bird season started in August with a bang and it had to be put aside to enable me to attend the many rescues and patients which increase over what we refer to the crazy time of Spring and Summer. Both D...eb and I and all the critters at Bohollow would like to give a huge shout out and heartfelt thanks to the kind hearted people who have donated to Bohollow and continue to donate as this allows us to keep our doors open and continue our 24/7 wildlife rescue service. Your support really does make a huge difference to us We should have calendars hot off the press sometime next week to distribute to the veterinary clinics who support our work and sell them and to begin posting out any orders. FarrierVet in Lancaster, Kialla and Shepparton Veterinary Clinics, GV Vets, Kyabram Veterinary Clinic, Numurkah Veterinary Clinic and Echuca Moama Veterinary Clinic will all stock the Bohollow calendar. You can also order directly from us through messaging us or calling us. Calendars are $20 each plus postage if you require us to mail them out. Not sure of postage price yet as we haven't checked this year's mailing price but is usually only an extra few dollars. They make a practical Christmas gift Every cent of profit from the sale of our calendars goes directly into maintaining our two Bohollow wildlife shelters and operating our 24/7 rescue service. It is always a difficult decision to choose the images each year and I hope you like the ones which made the final cut. All photography is mine and the subjects are either critters at Bohollow or taken locally in their natural environment. Thank you all for your support See more

01.01.2022 I apologise for the lack of regular posts for what seems like an eternitywe haven’t dropped off the face of the EarthDeb and I have been busy as ever tending to injured and orphaned wildlife, attending rescues and maintaining both shelters and it is our busiest time of year for our Bunbartha shelter.
