17.01.2022 Organic solutions for common garden pests We believe that we should not put anything in your soil or on your plants that should not be there. Some chemicals you spray to kill bugs can also kill your pollinaters ( Bees ). We would like our Patch to be as natural and organic as possible.... For those that feel the same hope this is of some help. Horticultural oil - 2 cups of vegetable oil + cup of dishwashing detergent. Shake together in a jar, where the mixture will turn a milky colour. Add 2 tablespoons of this concentrate to a litre of water and its ready to spray. This controls most insect pests, including scale, aphids, white fly, leaf miner, mealy bug and mites. Coffee - kills slugs and snails. Add to 10 parts water, one part espresso coffee (not instant). Spray over the surface of leaves and soil where snails and slugs might crawl. Reapply after heavy rain. All-round insecticide - chop four large onions, two cloves of garlic, and four hot chillies. Mix them together and cover with warm, soapy water and leave it to stand overnight. Strain off that liquid and add it to five litres of water to create an all-round insecticide. Soap spray - add two tablespoons of soap flakes to one litre of water and stir thoroughly until completely dissolved. There is no need to dilute this further, just spray it on as is. This controls aphids, caterpillars. Have a great day, Keep it natural, Dave and Bon.

17.01.2022 How to: Make Your Own Potting Mix.... Plants in pots need the right nutrients, water, air and a quality potting mix to live happily ever after. Most of us rely on purchased mix but its very easy and satisfying to make your own. Depending on how much we need, we either mix it up in a bucket,or in the wheelbarrow. ... We choose anything from an empty pot to a bucket to measure out the quantities, again depending on how much we need. Any leftovers are stored in a bucket with a lid. When planting into the mix, add a teaspoon of a suitable controlled-release fertiliser at root level. Fancy giving it a go? Here are our most-used recipes. Everyday potting mix This standard potting mix provides good drainage with good water retention. Use it in terracotta pots for plants that like drier conditions and use plastic pots for plants that prefer moist conditions. Recipe: 1 part mushroom compost or well-aged compost 1 part perlite or horticultural sand 1 part composted pine bark or garden soil Succulent mix Succulents grow well in pots, some even prefer it to growing in the garden. This potting mix offers the perfect drainage. Recipe: 1 part mushroom compost 1 part composted pine bark 1 part coir 1 part perlite 1 part horticultural sand Native mix Native plants need a well-drained potting mix thats not as rich as the standard mix. Add controlled-release fertiliser specially formulated for natives at planting time. Recipe: 3 parts standard mix 2 parts horticultural sand Seedling mix We love growing our own plants from seed, especially vegetables. Weve found this is the perfect DIY mix to get them off to a flying start. Recipe: 1 part perlite 1 part coir Give it a try it is not always the cheapest way to make it, but we find it is the best... Have a Happy New Year. Dave and Bon.

09.01.2022 BORAGE ( Borago officinalis ) Good reasons to have it in your garden... Borage is very useful in the garden. It attracts bees, which increases pollination of nearby plants. Borage may also enhance the growth of tomatoes (by confusing and repelling tomato hornworm); brassicas (by repelling and confusing cabbage worms); and strawberries may do better when grown near borage. Other plants that seem to improve when grown near borage: cucumbers, beans (including climbing and bush ...beans), grapes, zucchini/squash, and peas. It is not known to be antagonistic toward any plants. Borage is also useful as a mulch and in a compost pile. Its leaves and stems contain calcium and potassium which may account for another reason why tomatoes do well near borage. Blossom end rot, which affects tomatoes, is caused by lack of calcium. Potassium helps plants to bloom and set fruit, which may increase production in tomatoes and strawberries. Whatever reasons for planting borage, it is likely to do a lot of good for your garden. In the Kitchen... The smaller, younger leaves are best in fresh salads since they are not quite as bristly as the older leaves. If you still find them too disagreeable to eat fresh, you may find they are more useful when theyre chopped up and added to soups or sauted dishes. Remember that borage tastes like cucumber, so wherever cucumber flavor is needed, borage is likely to be able to act as a substitute. Borage can also be used only for the flavoring during the cooking, and then removed from the dish before serving.

05.01.2022 5 reasons to eat beetroot Discover what makes beetroot brilliant with these top reasons. 1) Beetroot is very low in calories and contain zero cholesterol. Its nutrition benefits come particularly from fibre, vitamins, minerals, and unique plant derived anti- oxidants.... 2) Beets have long been hailed as a natural healer for their blood pressure-lowering benefits - and researchers from Queen Mary University of London have verified that the nitrate in beetroot juice can indeed help to lower blood pressure. 3) Beets have traditionally been used to treat fever, constipation, bloating and gas. Modern herbalists may advise beets to treat indigestion, lower blood pressure, prevent heart disease and even help to fight cancer. 4) Early studies indicate that the beetroots prime antioxidant, betaine, may protect against liver disease - particularly the build up of fatty deposits in the liver caused by alcohol abuse, protein deficiency, or diabetes. 5) Dietary nitrate found in beetroot is thought to be a source for nitric oxide, which plays a key role in smoothing muscle, and triggering it to relax. This permits increased blood flow around the body, potentially enhancing exercise performance. See more

A bit of info on Borage.. Borage is an easy growing annual herb plant with vivid blue flowers and leaves and flowers that have the flavor and scent of cucumbers. It is considered an herb but is often grown as a flower in vegetable gardens where it attracts pollinating bees and is considered a good companion pla...nt for tomatoes, squash, and strawberries. Its even supposed to deter tomato hornworms and improve the flavor of tomatoes growing nearby. Both the flowers and the leaves are edible, with a cucumber-like flavor. Use the leaves while they are young, because as the plant matures, the stalks and leaves become covered with a prickly fuzz.
