25.01.2022 Copied from the Telegraph Point History page ....MEMORIES FROM IAN REID During the early years of the 19th Century with the establishment of Port Macquarie, the...re was a move for people to go further a field. The first of these were the red cedar cutters who moved to Rollands Plains where there was plenty of cedar to be found. This was the only industry at that time. It was decided that the only way to get supplies into Rollands Plains and produce, red cedar etc out was by means of the river system. Closely following the cedar getters were the free settlers who found the soil on the Wilson River flats very fertile. It wasn't long also before the colony decided it would be a good place to grow vegetables and crops for supplying the soldiers and convicts at Port Macquarie. So a wharf was built at the furthermost point of navigation, this was also at the end of tidal influence. The wharf was located opposite the old gravel crusher, a kilometre on the Telegraph Point side of Ballengarra bridge. The property surrounding the wharf was later owned by my Father and was called "Avenel". In this area two brick homes were built by the convicts also a storeroom to hold goods in transit. I can remember seeing what remained of the storeroom in my younger years. My Father told me about two bags of bar soap which were left outside the storeroom. They were stolen by the members of a local tribe thinking the bags may have contained food. They carried the bags to the top end of Rollands Plains before they checked the contents. At "Bronte" about a mile or so East of the Rollands Plains hall the convicts cleared ground and planted corn, wheat, sugar cane and vegetables. Frosts severely affected the sugar cane and rust quickly developed in the wheat. For these crops the area was unsuitable. The boat traffic on the river worked well for quite a while but there was a problem with the falls in the river which are situated opposite Keith Schmutter’s property. There were quite a few delays as it was only possible to negotiate this part of the river at high tide. Later a wharf was built opposite Billy Cutler’s property. This was known as Ballengarra Wharf and was found to be a better site. The area is now a reserve. To the best of my knowledge at both locations evidence of these wharves are still to be seen. This wharf became the focal point of all goods in and out of Rollands Plains and Ballengarra. The bullock teams carried tin from the mines at Gundle to the wharf at Ballengarra for shipment to Sydney. Likewise red cedar and produce to Port Macquarie. All kinds of supplies were brought in from Sydney for the settlers of Rollands Plains. Later on, with the advent of roads etc the wharf at Ballengarra was only used for the loading of logs for the hardwood timber mill at Hibbard. The other wharf was situated near the Telegraph Point Butter Factory, cream launches picked up the cream from farms on the Maria River and the lower reaches of the Wilson. This was delivered to the Telegraph Point Butter Factory for processing into butter. At one stage 37 bullock teams operated in the Rollands Plains area. Some of these teams were owned by family names in the area today such as Avery, Spokes and Warlters. Part of my property and a government property then was used for spelling and changing horses for the Cobb and Co coaches running between Port Macquarie and Kempsey. They played their part in opening up the area. Other stories about the cedar getters, diverting the river for power, wild horses and sayings of the time may be of interest at some other time.
