25.01.2022 This Little penguin, nicknamed "Lucy", was called through to our Wildlife Rescue line after she was found covered in tar. One of our incredible Rescue volunteers brought Lucy to the Sanctuary for her penguin spa treatment. Lucy was given a full health check and clean up by our experienced wildlife vets under general anaesthetic and after a few more washes to remove any leftover contamination, she should be set to go back to the wild! ... #bonorongwildlifesanctuary #bonorong #wildliferescue #penguin

25.01.2022 Did you know that echidnas have toothless jaws? Yep, that’s right! Instead of teeth, they have a long slender beak, armed with a 15cm long sticky tongue that they use to crush their food up against hard pads on the roof of their mouth! Echidnas love to feed on invertebrates including ants, worms and insect larvae and can eat up to around 40,000 per day pretty cool, huh!! ... #bonorongwildlifesanctuary #bonorong #monotreme #randallthethreeleggedechidna #echidna

22.01.2022 We love a happy story! Meet Callaway the Blue-tongued lizard. After being attacked by a dog, she was called through to our Wildlife rescue line where one of our dedicated rescue volunteers collected her and brought her to the Sanctuary to be seen by our Wildlife vets. ... After a thorough health check under general anaesthetic by our vet team, they decided to amputate her tail as it was too severely damaged after the attack. After her surgery, she was then placed with a registered Wildlife carer where she made a full recovery and was released back into the wild. Good luck out there Callaway! #bonorongwildlifesanctuary #bonorong #wildliferescue #bluetonguelizard

21.01.2022 It's important to keep our four-legged friends on leads unless in a designated off-lead area, so that animals like this beautiful Eastern quoll joey are kept safe! This little guy came to our Wildlife clinic after he was attacked by a dog! Our experienced vet team gave him a full health check under general anaesthetic and found that he had suffered a fracture at the base of his tail. He has since gone into care with an experienced wildlife carer to get some much needed R&R.... Photo thanks to Sam Seah #bonorong #bonorongwildlifesanctuary #ifaw #easternquoll #tasmania

19.01.2022 Today is Global Recycling Day! Global recycling day was created in 2018 and has been celebrated the world over ever since! The day's aim is to help recognise just how important recycling is in preserving our primary resources and saving our planet's future. We all know how devastating plastic is to our planet, but since plastic production took off in the 1950's, we have produced around 8.3 billion metric tonnes of the stuff! To put a visual concept to that, that’s roughly 1... billion African elephants worth - the largest of all land animals! Of that staggering amount, around 6.3 billion tonnes of the plastic produced has become waste, with a devastating 90% of it never having been recycled. Worldwide, we produce around 300 million tonnes of plastic each year, with over 8 million tonnes of it ending up in our oceans, having a catastrophic impact on our marine life. It is currently estimated that around 1 million seabirds die every year as a result of plastics in our oceans. Our animals on land aren’t safe either from irresponsible disposal of plastic and other waste items, often getting caught and trapped in rubbish. Here at Bonorong, we see many animals come through our gates that have injuries resulting from irresponsibly disposed plastic, this drives us to always endeavour to follow the 3 R's - reduce, reuse, and recycle and do our part to help protect our planet and wildlife. If you would like to learn more about Global Recycling Day and what you can do to help, follow this link: https://www.globalrecyclingday.com/about/ If you would like to read our blog post on plastics in our ocean and the impacts it has on our wildlife, head over to our website: https://www.bonorong.com.au/blog #bonorongwildlifesanctuary #bonorong #wildliferescue #globalrecyclingday #saynotoplastic

07.01.2022 Bonorong’s Wildlife Hospital has been extremely fortunate to have had continuous assistance and support from Dr Evelyn Woods. Evelyn is a mobile rehabilitation vet and has come to Bonorong on numerous occasions to provide laser therapy on some of our rehabilitation animals that have chronic, non-healing or slow to heal wounds. Bonorong is incredibly grateful to Evelyn for her time, expertise and advise on these difficult cases. This week she worked on three of our rehab cri...tters. Samurai the juvenile Tasmanian devil came in missing a front foot. The whole leg was compromised and so was removed with extensive surgery. Laser treatment will enhance the healing of the surgical wound, which will take months. Husky the blue-tonged lizard sustained a large, open wound to his back after a run-in with a lawn mower. He will also require many months of rehabilitation before release back to the wild. Snowy the juvenile brush-tailed possum came in with infected wounds on all four feet. We do not know how these wounds occurred but the laser treatment was the final stage of Snowy’s medical rehabilitation. He is now with an experienced wildlife rehabilitator who will release him when he is old enough. Check out the below photos of Evelyn working her magic! A huge thankyou to Evelyn for providing our Wildlife Hospital with this specialised treatment and assisting in the recovery of these animals. Check out her Facebook page here: Mobile Rehab Vet. #bonorongwildlifesanctuary #bonorong #wildliferehabilitation #bonorongwildlifehospital

03.01.2022 To finish up #National Bird Week, we'd love to introduce you to Paton, the Tawny frogmouth. Paton came to us through our Wildlife Rescue Service after she was hit by a car. If you look closely at the photo, you may notice that one of her pupils is larger than the other; this is a result of her accident. Due to this injury, she is unable to be released back into the wild as her vision is now limited, making it difficult for her to hunt for food. There is a popular misconcept...ion that Tawny frogmouths get their name from their diet, however, a tawny's diet consists mostly of insects and other small animals. The 'frogmouth' part their name actually comes from their mouth resembling that of a frog's when open! #bonorongwildlifesanctuary #bonorong #wildliferescue See more

03.01.2022 Does anyone else have grass coming out of their ears at the moment?! The grass around the Sanctuary grounds has EXPLODED and we are struggling to keep up with keeping it all cut back! If you can help, please email the Sanctuary - [email protected] Thanks everyone!! Photo thanks to Hannah Schreck.

02.01.2022 You may have seen in the media last week that the Pacific black duck, known as Stickduck, was released back into the wild - a huge win for wildlife! Stickduck has become somewhat of a celebrity to the people around Hobart, after countless calls have been made to our Wildlife Rescue Team in regards to her very unique injury. Not an easy thing to miss, this poor duck had a sizeable stick impaled through her body. Despite her injury, she was still able to swim, fly, socialise ...with other ducks, and carry on a relatively normal duck life. Many of our volunteer Bonorong Wildlife Rescuers attempted to capture her over many months but she was able to evade them all. After many, many fruitless attempts at trying to contain Stickduck over the course of many months, her evasiveness came to an end once she landed in someone's backyard. Luckily, the person swiftly acted and captured the duck, transporting her to Eastern Shore vet clinic for treatment. Once the team over at Eastern Shore found Stickduck to be in a stable condition, she was brought over to the Bonorong Wildlife Hospital for specialised treatment by our ifaw funded wildlife vets. Our vets managed to pull the stick free with relative ease, as luckily the stick had narrowly missed major blood vessels and organs - one lucky duck! The wound from the stick was clean and free of infection, so our experienced vet team prescribed one week of rest for Stickduck before she could return home to the wild. On the much anticipated day, the whole Bonorong team gave their warm wishes to Stickduck as she left the Sanctuary. Turning into the carpark near her release site at the casino, a place she was frequently spotted, she began to get restless in her petpack, knowing that she would be home soon! For the special occasion, we invited two very dedicated volunteer Wildlife Rescuers who had come to know Stickduck very well over the last few months, recounting all the times they've tried to capture her. As they opened the petpack to return this very resilient duck back into the wild, the duck leapt free and ran straight for the water without so much as looking back! As we said our goodbyes and good lucks, the Rescuers made sure to give her a stern warning of 'No more sticks!'. We can only hope that she took on the feedback. We would like to thank the community and everyone who was a part of this incredible duck's journey. This has been a momentous win for wildlife! #bonorongwildlifesanctuary #bonorong #wildliferescue
