01.01.2022 This weekend I’ve re-watched and have been re-reading Jane Eyre. I often find myself doing this at the beginning of each year. Like a re-setting of myself after a busy end of year - especially with all the things 2020 threw at us. I love that each re-reading of a favourite novel brings some fresh insight - tonight I lectured my children on how lucky they are to have such a wonderful school and teachers. Whatever, mummy, said they in reply. But back to JE. I remember debatin...g with the classes I taught this novel to - why did Jane not just run away with Rochester. It’s her sense of self, of her worth, not just her understanding that society would ostracise her, or the trauma of her childhood and how it shaped her character, that makes me return again and again to this novel. While I love reading new authors and exploring modern literature, there is something about 19th century British literature that I cannot help but returning to. See more
