03.01.2022 Reflecting on our experiences so far this year at BnB... and leading into Invasion Day... we have been thinking about human rights and how that relates to the work we do. Specifically the RIGHT of all children in this country to have equitable access to educational material, including BOOKS. Hearing that some First Nations children in remote communities have only ONE book to call their own; that they read over and over and over... because there isnt ACCESS to anything else, i...s not something to celebrate. It is a breach of fundamental human rights. - This is just one example of the systemic discrimination and colonial oppression that First Nations peoples have endured since invasion and continue to endure today, in the now year 2021. January 26 is not something to be proud of. Or celebrate. This day marks invasion and the beginning of genocide. Today is a day of mourning. - Today we reflect on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture and think about the examples we set for the next generations of children across Australia; and in particular how we support First Nations children, who receive our books, and who belong to Community, Country ... and CULTURE... across these lands, that is continually STRONG, RESILIENT, RICH and BEAUTIFUL even in the face of such unimaginable adversity. - Only when the mainstream, at the very minimum decolonise their thinking & learn to RESPECT and LISTEN to the voices, the truth-telling, the WISDOM... of First Nations peoples and acknowledge the wrongs of the past (& those of the PRESENT).... can authentic healing begin. January 26 is not a day to celebrate or be proud of. Today is a day of mourning. This always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land. - #booksnboots #literacyequity #firstnations #decolonisetothrive #abolishaustraliaday #changethedate #alwayswasalwayswillbe See more
