12.01.2022 We’re warning the public against using unregistered tax practitioners this tax time. We want to ensure that registered practitioners are not left at a competiti...ve disadvantage by unregistered advisers offering unrealistically large tax refunds and benefits that are not available under the law, costing consumers thousands of dollars in tax bills and penalties. We’re encouraging consumers to check the TPB Register to confirm they’re using a registered tax practitioner. Give your clients peace of mind this tax time and display your ‘Registered tax practitioner’ symbol. Get it here: http://ow.ly/yDFb50AlmHm

04.01.2022 Employers: Your next super guarantee payments are due to your employees’ super funds by Sunday 28 April. As this falls on a weekend, you have until the next business day to get it done. For more info, visit www.ato.gov.au//Paying-super-contributio/When-to-pay-super

03.01.2022 Bringing Forward Super Guarantee Contributions and save tax! The compulsory 9.5% Superannuation Guarantee (SG) is payable by employers 28 days after the end of ...each quarter. For those of you who handle client superannuation, if clients have the cash on hand they may instruct you to, or they may wish to consider, bringing forward the payment of the June quarter amount to before 1 July (normally due 28 July). Doing so will bring forward the deduction to this financial year (2018/2019). Be aware that deductions can only be claimed in the year that the super fund receives the payment (as distinct from when you made the payment). For electronic payments, for the purposes of claiming a deduction, the contribution is deemed to be made when the funds are credited to the superannuation provider’s account (usually a maximum of a few days). Accordingly, in order for the employer to be able to claim their deduction this financial year, it is recommended that you bring payments forward to account for this (rather than leave it until the final few days). If you are paying to a Superannuation Clearing House, you should allow more time for your contributions to clear. The ATO has specified no later than 21 June. You should also be mindful that in pursuing the above strategy, it may cause some employees to exceed their annual $25,000 concessional contribution cap. The client may not want to bring forward the contributions in these instances.

The Commissioner issues a Determination each ...year which sets out the amounts that are considered reasonable for the substantiation exception in the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 (ITAA 1997). TD 2018/11 applies to the 2018-19 income year in relation to claims made by employees for: (a) overtime meal expenses - for food and drink when working overtime (b) domestic travel expenses - for accommodation, food and drink, and incidentals when travelling away from home overnight for work (particular reasonable amounts are given for employee truck drivers, office holders covered by the Remuneration Tribunal and Federal Members of Parliament) (c) overseas travel expenses - for food and drink, and incidentals when travelling overseas for work. 02.01.2022 SCAM ALERT - FAKE MYGOV SMS AND EMAILS The Australian Taxation Office says it’s receiving increasing reports of several myGov-related SMS and email scams.... These scams look like they have come from a myGov or ATO email address. They also might appear in your legitimate ATO or myGov SMS message thread. The ATO says people should not click any links and don’t provide the information requested. Any email or SMS notifications from the ATO about new myGov messages will never include a link to log on to your myGov account. The services should always be accessed directly via: https://bit.ly/2O7iZIi, https://bit.ly/3f8XKBU or the ATO app. You can make accessing your myGov account more secure by opting to receive a security code via SMS.
