25.01.2022 scabiosa Terrible name, pretty flower and yes they were once used to treat scabies. This is another fave of mine that you dont see around often. They have lots of larger petals that surround a heap of little petals with contrasting coloured tiny stamens. They are on long straight stems and I love putting them in arrangements sticking out being all here I am! Over here! Look at me! 22.01.2022 Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Well that was a day!! It was crazy busy today and I wanted to pop on here and give you some real chat. Firstly thank you to everyone for your continued support everyday. Every dollar you decide to spend in a small business does so much for that business and the local community. BR has grown beyond my expectations in the last 2 years, today we had sold out of arrangements by 10am and at one point we had an hour wait on custom arrangements bein...g made, the fact that you are all prepared to wait and are so patient with us is amazing! I know they look similar but when you put them next to each other is pretty obvious how different they are. Dahlias are more beautiful in my opinion but mums are just so full and last for ages! Once again we are reminded that every flower has its purpose.

Step by step for just a few flowers in the house to brighten up the weekend 1. Tall skinny vase, this one was about 30cm. Skinnier the vase, the less flowers... 2. One large leaf feature foliage 3. A foliage with more branches (2 stems) 4. One large flower, a little shorter and at the front 5. A taller flower behind it and on the side (does not have to be the same flower) 6. A piece of tall preserved something (pick a pretty one because you can use it again and again and again...) 7. A small preserved item, only if you have one about the place AND DONE! 05.01.2022 #floristlessonfriday Today we are going to continue on the flower care theme. I know we covered re cutting your flowers stems last lesson, I know you remember because I SHOUTED!! This is one step further, some flowers lets say phali stems, Poppys, peonies and sunflowers like a scolding! Put about 2cm of boiling water in a bucket, cut the stems and put the bottom of the stem in the boiling water, leave for 1-2mins depending on how thick or woody the stem is and then put the...m into a vase of clean water. This gives them a little shock into drinking. I was taught as an apprentice a very long time ago by an old school florist to even bash the bottom 3cm of the stems of some woody stemmed flowers like lilac and guelder rose with a hammer to help them drink, I admit I dont remember why but old habits die hard, like Bruce Willis. 05.01.2022 #floristlessonfriday If you only ever remember one thing I tell you on #floristlessonfriday PLEASE (yes, I am shouting) LET IT BE THIS! Cut your flower stems. When you get flowers home always always always cut their stems. On an angle with sharp scissors for a nice clean cut with no damage to the stems. Flowers have little veins that transports the water up the stem to the leaves and head of the flower. The second the stem leaves the water these get air bubbles and then w...ater can no long be sucked up! So re cut your stems when you get home and put them straight into clean water, for particularly fragile flowers even cut the stems under water. Do this every second day. As your flowers get older and some of them die, split your bunch up and cut the stems short and disperse them throughout the house in little vases. The shorter the stem the less energy the flower uses to move the water to the head and you might just get an extra day! 05.01.2022 Have you ever caught a glimpse of me in the shop in the dark before opening in the morning? Sometimes I need to get some work done before the shop opens and then it is GO until basically bed time but sometimes I just need a quiet moment with the flowers. We get told daily how beautiful our job must be and it is (not always btw!) but sometimes being in the same room as the flowers is not enough and we can take it for granted so every now and then I go in early, set the shop up and just be present in the flowers space and remember it is their space not mine. It is a Botanic Republic after all xo

So when you have a hydrangea and its going a little floppy, cut the bottom of the stem and then pop the WHOLE flower, stem, head and all in a little bath. They will pop right back! Or give them a little spritz with a spray bottle to keep them fresh.... Dont do this with all flowers though, some really dont like it, some petals lets say roses, go transparent or get dots on them when they get wet so always check with your florist on the best flower care for the flowers you are purchasing See more

03.01.2022 s w e e t s w e e t f r e s s i a Last week we met poppy, this weeks beautiful but underrated flower is freesia! She pops in gardens in winter/spring in our colder climates. She is little and comes in a range of colours but white is my all time fave. In fact freesias are my all time favorite flower. Each stems has a flower and some buds, when one flower opens up the one next to it starts to die. But this is not whats amazing about them. Their scent is delicious, I want to bottle it! Next time stop and smell the freesias
