24.01.2022 SPEECH PATHOLOGY WEEK Hi there, Im Taylah and Im one of the speech pathologists here at Bounce Back Health, having graduated with a Bachelor of Speech Patholo...gy from Flinders University of South Australia. Outside of work, I enjoy live music, exploring SAs food scene, travelling, kayaking and spending time with my sausage dog, Frankie! In my role as a speech pathologist, I adore the variety and interest that comes from working with children and adults to support them through their journey to better communication and happier and safer mealtimes. Although working across all areas of practice, I have a strong love for working with people who have complex communication needs and all things AAC - augmentative and alternative communication! AAC is essentially a communication tool that could be an option for children and adults that have little or no speech in the short- or long-term. AAC systems can come in different forms, styles, types, access modes and are personalised for individual use. Its all about providing communication access! AAC systems can include (but are not limited to): Speech generating devices Pictures, symbols and/or photos Communication boards and books Writing or typing Switches and buttons Signing If you or someone you know may benefit from some supported communication, please get in touch with our speech pathology team here at Bounce Back.

24.01.2022 Sensory Play! Sensory play provides children with an exciting sensory experience which fosters and inspires their curiosity to explore and learn about the worl...d around them . It allows them to develop an understanding of their senses and is known to build important nerve pathways within the brain to improve fine motor skills, social interaction, cognitive development and problem-solving skills. This Muddy Dinos game was created using chocolate cake mix and water. You can expand the sensory experience even further by adding a bubble bath for the Dinos to bathe in after playing in the mud . #bouncebackhealth #bbh #ot #sensory #sensoryplay #sensoryplayideas #autism #sensoryprocessingdisorder #dinosaurs #mud #sensoryplay #sensoryactivity #sensory

21.01.2022 SPEECH PATHOLOGY WEEK Hello! I am Natalie and I have been a Speech Pathologist for almost two year...s, completing my Masters of Speech Pathology in 2018. I have learnt that my job is not just about helping children talk, but to build their confidence to talk freely and develop resilience for when they make mistakes. I enjoy working with children of all ages who have difficulty with speech sounds and language skills, as well as social and emotional skills. I am currently in the process of running the Secret Agent Society for Social Skills group program. This program is for children between 8-12 years old and teaches a variety of skills including: Recognising emotions in themselves and others Expressing their feelings in appropriate ways Coping with feelings of anger and anxiety Communicating and playing with others Coping with mistakes, transitions and challenges Building and maintaining friendships Solving social problems Preventing and managing bullying and teasing Acknowledging their personal strengths This program has proven to be effective in children who have social and emotional difficulties, as well as children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), anxiety and other mental health diagnoses. This program allows the children to crack the code of emotional and social skills in ways which are relative to them, and ultimately, improves their ability to integrate into social situations every day. If your child has difficulty with any of the above skills, get in touch to secure their position in our secret agent group running again next year.

21.01.2022 RUN FOR AUTISM This week some of our Bounce Back Health staff members are participating in Aspect Australia’s ‘Run for Autism’ event. Our staff have each se...t themselves a running challenge (whether that be 10km, a half marathon or full marathon) with the goal of raising funds to provide people on the autism spectrum to make the most of their education, develop life-long skills, improve their confidence and relationships and maximise their opportunities in life. Our team has collectively set out to run 300km and have raised nearly $3,000 so far! Our team says: We are running for autism to help create a world where no-one on the autism spectrum is left behind. We will be running from Sunday 1st- 8th November while raising much needed funds to support people on the autism spectrum. An estimated 1 in every 70 people is on the spectrum. Along with their family members, this means autism is a part of daily life for over a million Australians. People on the spectrum see, hear, feel and experience the world differently. For many, simply coping with the everyday can lead to confusion, anxiety and isolation. By coming together and taking action, we can help provide opportunities for people on the autism spectrum to participate, engage and thrive in the world around them. In addition to raising funds, this week is about raising awareness, alleviating stigma and creating a more inclusive world: we have shared some myth conceptions vs truths posted by Aspect Australia (https://www.runforautism.org.au)

18.01.2022 SPEECH PATHOLOGY WEEK Hi Im Kendal, I have 2 young children, in between keeping up with them I enjoy craft, sewing and walking my dogs. I completed a bachelor ...of Speech Pathology at Flinders Uni in 2012. I'm interested and really enjoy working in the areas of both paediatrics and adult speech and language, especially social skills and communication, swallowing and feeding. I can support clients in areas such as speech, language, literacy, communication disorders, social skills, swallowing and feeding difficulties. Difficulties with swallowing? Do you or do you know someone who: - Chokes on foods and/or liquids - Has difficulty chewing different foods - Has frequent chest infections - Dribbles constantly - Has a dry mouth - Feels like food is getting stuck on the way down These could be due to abnormalities with the act of swallowing. These difficulties are serious and affect all aspects of a persons life. These difficulties arise from problems with the nerves and muscles between the mouth and stomach which are due to but not limited to stroke, brain injury, degenerative diseases, and diseases associated with the nervous system and muscles. There are many strategies available to improve your quality of life! If you are or know someone who is experiencing difficulties with eating and/or swallowing book in with one of our adult Speech Pathologists.

18.01.2022 Here at Bounce Back Health we are passionate about supporting our clients both inside and outside of the clinical setting. Funds raised go towards blood cancer research and support families facing Leukaemia, something that is also extremely close to our hearts here at Bounce Back Health. Follow the link below to support this wonderful cause.

18.01.2022 What's that noise? Are my knees ok? Quite often Physiotherapists are asked these questions. Are noisy knee normal? Yes, yes they are. The knee joint often makes a popping or clicking sounds. It is not a sign of an injury, just the movement of fluid in the joint. So if your knees talkative but you don't have pain, don't fret, it's most likely the fluid behind your kneecap. Don't avoid exercise becuase of the noise, the loss of muscle strength is likely to cause a problem. ... Keep calm and click on Thanks MSKPhysiojournal for this helpful info graph

11.01.2022 SPEECH PATHOLOGY WEEK Hey! Im Caitlin, I am an avid reader and I enjoy running, swimming and a holiday to somewhere new (less so ...lately!) I graduated from Australian Catholic University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Speech Pathology (hons) and have continued my learning throughout my career at every possible opportunity. I have experience working with adults and children with a range of disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability and Cerebral Palsy. Im passionate about supporting clients to develop their independence and achieve their communication goals such as speech, fluency and literacy. Stuttering is a disruption in the rhythm or flow of speech. The exact cause of stuttering is unknown, however it is thought to be linked to differences in brain activity related to speech production. Someone who stutters knows what they want to say by has trouble pronouncing it fluently. There are different types of disruptions, including: Repeated sounds (c-c-can) Repeated syllables (da-da-daddy) Repeated words (and-and-and) Repeated phrases (I want-I want-I want) Prolongations (where sounds or parts of the word are stretched out caaaaan I go) Blocks (often silent and it looks like the person is stuck) Symptoms of stuttering can vary from day-to-day and in different activities. For example, speaking in a group or talking on the telephone may make the stutter more severe, compared to singing or reading which may reduce the stutter. There are many strategies to support increasing fluency and reducing the anxiety that can accompany stuttering. If you or someone you know is experiencing difficulties with stuttering then book in with one of our adult speech pathologists.

08.01.2022 What is AAC? Augmentative and alternative communication, commonly referred to as AAC is essentially a communication tool that could be an option for children and/or adults that are having trouble communicating verbally in the short- or long term. 08.01.2022 SPEECH PATHOLOGY WEEK Hi, I am Jo and I would like to introduce Bounce Backs growing team of awesome speech pathologists: Olivia, Natalie, Kendal, Caitlin, Tay...lah and myself. Each day during Speech Pathology Week we will introduce one of our team members, who will talk about a communication topic they are passionate about. As told by Speech Pathology Australia, this week is to recognise the massive 1.2 million people in Australia who have a communication disability, and to promote the work done by Speech Pathologists to help these people communicate with confidence! Communication disabilities are largely invisible and can affect an individuals ability to comprehend information, explain stories or events, engage in conversations, speak clearly and much more! This week seeks to build awareness on these difficulties our peers may be experiencing each and every day. This year, the theme of Speech Pathology week is Communicating with Confidence!. We would like to thank all of our speech pathologists here at Bounce Back Health for the work they do to help their clients communicate with confidence.

05.01.2022 Lego and Language! Using Lego is a fun and interactive way to develop your childs speech and language skills! In younger children, Lego can be used to bro...aden and expand their vocabulary! Modelling language as you build and play will teach them new words and concepts. In older children, use the instruction manual to work on sequencing, receptive and expressive language. One way you can do this is by keeping the instruction manual out of their view and describe the instructions to them. This asks your child to listen carefully to your instruction and find the correct pieces. You can then swap turns, so they can then practice delivering specific and detailed instructions for you to follow. #bouncebackheath #bbh #speechpathology #speechpathologist #sp #munnopara #lego #speech #language #speechtherapy #speechies #therapy #speechtherapyideas #speechandlanguage
