25.01.2022 What is Bowen Therapy? Bowen is a holistic remedial body technique that works on the soft connective tissue (fascia) of the body. Bowen therapy can be used to treat musculoskeletal or neurological problems including acute sports injuries and chronic conditions. It is gentle and relaxing and does not use forceful manipulation. Bowen therapy is performed on the superficial and deep fascia. The fascia, or soft tissue, is the part of the connective tissue that envelops, separate...s and influences every organ and tissue in the body. The Bowen technique is safe to use on anyone, from newborns to the elderly and for any musculoskeletal or related neuromuscular complaint. It is a holistic treatment that treats the whole person and aims to treat the cause of problems, rather than just the symptoms.

25.01.2022 Bowen Therapy makes light moves over fascia. But what is fascia? Fascia is a web of connective tissue formed in bands that wraps around all the internal parts of the body from head to toe and fuses it all together. It allows the muscles to move freely alongside other structures and reduces friction. It can be found immediately beneath the skin, around muscles, groups of muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels, organs and cells. Fascia is everywhere. Biologically, it’s what ...holds us together. Like bones, fascia bands are composed primarily of collagen which gives them a tough but pliable texture. The fascial system maintains a balance of tension and elasticity which allows for smooth, unrestricted movement of each muscle group while holding everything in place. If the fascia is restricted then muscle contraction is restricted. Stay tuned for more information on fascia in coming weeks!

25.01.2022 Due to the current situation, Bowen Harmony will be closed until further notice. This decision is to protect my clients and myself from potential exposure to the COVID-19 virus, and is in line with government recommendations. If you have any body-related concerns such as pain or restrictions, feel free to contact me during this time. I would be happy to give you some stretches or exercises to help. Take care and stay safe during this time. I look forward to catching up with everyone afterwards. Frances

23.01.2022 Head horns caused by using mobile phones? It's amazing how much the body can adapt to what we ask it to do.

22.01.2022 Postural Realignment Many Bowen Therapy moves are done either at each end (origin and insertion) or the middle (belly) of muscles. These affect the resting length of the muscle. If you have previously had an injury or repetitive strain, the body may adapt to an abnormal state of tension. Bowen moves override the perceived tension within the muscles or tendons, resulting in greater relaxation of the tissue. This means that where poor posture is caused by unbalanced muscle tension (eg tight pectorals and loose back muscles causing the shoulders to round forward), Bowen can help to straighten you up and improve your posture!

21.01.2022 Back at work and have a sore neck? Working at a desk can cause people to sit in awkward postures. This can result in people developing pain in the neck, shoulders and upper back. Along with changes to your workstation, Bowen Therapy can give you relief by getting the muscles to relax and return to their normal happy self.

20.01.2022 Feeling stressed or anxious? Bowen Therapy is great to help you relax. It helps the body's parasympathetic nervous system to "rest and digest" and quietens the "fight or flight" response. You will feel much more relaxed and settled. Talk to Bowen Harmony today about feeling better!

18.01.2022 Ever wondered what a Bowen Therapy 'move' is? Bowen Therapy moves are not like massage. The Bowen move is performed by lightly drawing the 'slack' of the skin and fascia over underlying muscles / tendons / ligaments. Light pressure is then applied to the muscle and held for a short duration. This encourages the muscles to relax. The practitioner's thumbs or fingers then roll over the muscle, slightly stretching the tissue. After a series of moves, the practitioner then wa...its a couple of minutes before starting the next moves. This wait allows the body to process and integrate the effects of the moves. Bowen Therapy creates a complex series of signals in the body to override tension, pain and tightness of the muscles / tendon / ligament, resulting in relaxation and balance within the body. 17.01.2022 Ever wondered why Bowen Harmony is called Bowen Harmony? ‘Bowen’ is the technique I use to treat people. See other posts for more details on what Bowen Therapy is, but it’s a gentle hands-on therapy, suitable for all ages that encourages the body to heal itself. The word ‘Harmony’ reflects the aim of each treatment to encourage your body to be in harmony with itself and what you are asking it to do. It also represents my other passion music.

16.01.2022 Common muscle stretches Hamstrings One of the most common tight muscles I see in the clinic are tight hamstrings. There are three muscles in each leg that form the hamstrings, which from behind the knee to the bottom of the pelvis, at the back of the thigh. Tight hamstrings can cause the hips and pelvis to rotate backwards, flattening the lower back and causing back issues. Tight hamstrings can be causes by activities such as dancing, running, cycling and tennis and a...lso by driving, where you might find the hamstrings in one leg get tighter than the other leg. Two things to watch out for: 1. If you have a hamstrings injury (eg strain or tendonosis) then follow your medical practitioner’s recommendations about stretching. The seriousness of the injury will dictate when you can start stretching and how far you can stretch. 2. Just because you feel hamstrings tightness doesn't mean that the hamstrings are actually the source of the problem. It's not uncommon for people with lower back spinal disc issues to present with pain, tightness, or numbness/tingling into the legs - especially the hamstrings. The symptoms may also come from nerve entrapment, most commonly the sciatic nerve. Aggressively stretching the hamstrings can make these symptoms worse. If you have any doubt, always talk with an appropriate health practitioner about it. See more

16.01.2022 Why is water good? - Part 1 Drinking Water Helps Maintain the Balance of Body Fluids. Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature. How much water have you drunk today?

16.01.2022 Muscle stretching or strengthening? Many people are confused about when to stretch muscles, and when to strengthen them. The short answer is that tight or short muscles need stretching, and weak or lengthened muscles need strengthening. The benefits of stretching include: - increased flexibility - improved range of motion of muscles and joints... - increased muscle relaxation - decreased muscle soreness - improved blood circulation The benefits of strengthening muscles is to increase the amount of power available - ie increasing the maximum amount of work an individual muscle can perform in a given unit of time. As a Bowen Therapist, I work with clients to identify muscles that need stretching or strengthening, and provide simple exercises to help. Contact Bowen Harmony today to discuss your situation. 15.01.2022 How does a Bowen Treatment work? A Bowen treatment consists of sequences of small moves at varying pressures, each at a specific site on the body. The treatment is relaxing therapists use light, cross-fibre manoeuvres of muscle, tendon or ligament with no forceful manipulation. A treatment will typically last one hour. It can be provided through a layer of light clothing, although you may be asked to remove heavy or thick garments. During this time, the therapist may leave the room for periods of two to five minutes at a time. This allows time for your body to respond to the treatment and for the necessary changes to occur in your body before commencing the next sequence of moves.

11.01.2022 Muscle strengthening Muscle strengthening is the opposite of stretching. The aim is to strengthen weak muscles so they help with activities whether that be exercise, sitting at a desk or other daily activities. Strengthening muscle weaknesses also helps to correct postural issues in the body. Key things to remember when strengthening: 1. Stop when the muscle starts to ‘quiver’ or shake. This indicates the muscle has reached exhaustion. 2. Do not work through pain. I...f you feel pain, stop immediately. 3. Strengthen only weak muscles. Strengthening already strong muscles (that are doing the majority of the work) will not help and may increase postural compensation. 4. Repeat strengthening exercises regularly. Depending on what muscles you’re targeting, do 5 - 10 repetitions in each set, and do 2 to 3 sets each day. 5. Increase the weight once you’ve reached your desired number of repetitions. A bag of rice or a can of soup can make the exercise harder. Remember to decrease the number of repetitions again each time you increase the weight. If you’d like ideas about muscle strengthening, there are lots of ideas on the internet, but if you’d like information about strengthening exercises that are best suited to you and your activities, contact Bowen Harmony today! 11.01.2022 Difficulty standing up straight? Unable to straighten your legs while lying on your back? Your psoas muscles may be too tight. Talk to Bowen Harmony today about loosening them up and rebalancing your whole body.

10.01.2022 Muscle stretching Muscles should be stretched when they are short and/or tight. If they’re too tight for long, the body compensates and changes posture to cope. This can cause issues elsewhere in the body. We all know that Bowen Therapy can help loosen tight muscles and restore posture. But if you can’t spare 1 hour for a Bowen treatment, then try muscle stretching. Key things to remember when stretching: 1. Stretches need to be gentle and without pain. If you feel ...pain, stop immediately. 2. Stretch only tight and/or short muscles. Stretching already long muscles will not help and may increase postural compensation. 3. Repeat stretches regularly. Depending on what muscle you’re targeting, do 5 stretches of about 10 30 seconds each in each set, and do 2 to 3 sets each day. If you’d like ideas about muscle stretching, there are lots of ideas on the internet, but if you’d like information about stretches that are best suited to you and your activities, contact Bowen Harmony today! 09.01.2022 In an NCBI publication, Dr. Thomas Findley illustrates the presence and complexity of fascia with this simple clinical demonstration: "Sit in your chair with your knees bent and dorsiflex your ankle (flex up and down). Now take that leg and with the knee straight, put it on the table in front of you and do the same thing. The foot moves less. Now bend your trunk forward. Even less motion. Next, drop your head. Now you can really feel tightness in your calf." This demonstrat...es just one simple fascial connection, the back-line, but the fascial connections throughout the body are far, far more intricate. Since there is one singular piece of this stretchy, mesh-like substance interweaving through muscles and organs from head to toe like shrink-wrap, distress in one area can affect movement and create symptoms elsewhere. This is why our shoulder begins to hurt after a sore ankle has been bothering us, or any one of a number of scenarios where stress from one area causes tension in another part of the body. The body might be composed of different parts, but they are all connected by fascia. See more

07.01.2022 Feel like there's always a stone in your shoe? Or may it's more like your sock is bunched up? This is a symptom associated with a condition called Morton's Neuroma, where tissue growth presses on a nerve located in the ball of your foot. Usual causes include wearing tight shoes, high heels, or some other foot conditions (such as flat feet or overly high arches). Bowen Therapy can help. Talk to us today!

07.01.2022 Advice after Bowen Therapy After a Bowen treatment, the therapist will remind you of the 3 W’s of Bowen: 1. Water. Drinking more water will hydrate the body’s fascia (connective tissue) and allow the Bowen treatment to work better. 2. Walk. Walking stimulates blood flow and encourages the muscles to move to their correct position. However vigorous activity is not recommended the day of the treatment. 3. Wait. It is recommended that you do not have any other physical therapy or manipulation (eg massage, chiropractic, physiotherapy, acupuncture) for at least 5 days after treatment. This allows your body to fully adjust to the bowen treatment.

05.01.2022 Why is water good? Part 2 Water Helps Energize Muscles. Cells that don't maintain their balance of fluids and electrolytes shrivel, which can result in muscle fatigue. When muscle cells don't have adequate fluids, they don't work well and performance can suffer.

02.01.2022 What's the connection between WWW and Bowen Therapy? In Bowen Therapy, WWW stands for Water, Walk and Wait. Your body needs water. Bowen Therapy works by acting on the fascia (connective tissue) throughout the body. Fascia needs water to work properly, and consequently drinking plenty of water is crucial. Walk means to keep active by walking. We don't want you to sit in front of the TV for the rest of the day, since that will not help your treatment. Get up and move aroun...d regularly to keep the blood and body systems moving. Following a Bowen treatment, we ask you to wait before seeking other types of treatment. Generally it is recommended to wait at least 4 days before more treatment. This allows the body to process the Bowen moves and get the most out of the treatment. Have any questions?
