20.01.2022 It's been a busy week at the gallery! Here are a few behind the scenes views of our progress installing the 2020 Bowness Photography Prize. We are thrilled to confirm that MGA - Monash Gallery of Art will re-open Saturday 21 November 2020. Please check our website closer to date for further information regarding opening hours and planning your visit.

20.01.2022 Get to know more about the Bowness Photography Prize finalists' images. Each image is accompanied by an artist statement, which can give insight into the artists’ intention. Today, we deep dive into the theme of 'family'. Amos Gebhardt challenges conventional concepts of family in their work ‘Family portrait’; understand the significance of a grandmother in Lee Grant's 'A portrait of Lena's Armenian grandmother' and consider the nature of absence within maternal relationships... in Madeline Bishop's 'Yuyi and Yola'. See all the statements online here: https://bit.ly/3icQ1Dt

15.01.2022 "From Amos Gebhardt we see Family portrait (2020), a triptych featuring ‘subjects who defy normative notions of kinship and identity as a mode of survival within Australia,’ challenging conventional views of what family looks like, staged in hyper-real settings surrounded by objects and botanicals, which reflect on personal and cultural ties." 04.01.2022 ‘We are delighted to launch the Bowness Photography Prize in 2020 in the wake of such a tumultuous year. It is fitting the launch marks MGA’s re-opening after months of closure due to COVID-19 restrictions as the prize the Bowness Photography Prize is a celebration of contemporary photography in Australia and spans the breadth and depth of photographic practice. We have also created new and enhanced ways to engage with the works by increasing access to the exhibition though our satellite and virtual exhibitions.’ Anouska Phizacklea, Gallery Director Read more from ART News Portal article here: https://www.artnewsportal.com//mga-to-reopen-with-a-celebr Book your free visit this weekend here: https://visitmga.youcanbook.me/

03.01.2022 "I’m delighted to be in the running for the Bowness Prize. On the surface, A mare in the grass is an image of a historic graveyard site at Kiandra in the Kosciuszko National Park after the bushfires had passed. I took the photograph in early January when the landscape was a sea of ash, everything was suffused with this strange red light. The scene is reduced to something very quiet."
