25.01.2022 Hello friends! It’s no secret that this time of year is absolutely crazy with school ending, holidays coming, Christmas creeping closer and everything else that life entails. With this time of year being very busy, and myself having had surgery this past week, we won’t be running any organised school holiday program for this Summer Holidays. ... That said, there is still options for arranging fun days out with other people and support workers! Please let me know if you would like to be included in any informal plans we make for this Summer Happy Holidays!!! -Brooke and the team x

23.01.2022 Hello friends! Trigger Warning: Mental Wellbeing & Mental Distress Today's post is once again following a person-first language focus, by providing some context around "mental illness" which is now referred to as psychosocial disability by the United Nations. Similarly, mental health is now eligible for funding with the NDIS (when meeting certain requirements). I have and do work with clients who's disabilities stem from mental distress which impacts their ability to engag...e with the world around them in a safe and fulfilling way. These guides on use of language are specific to people with a mental health diagnosis, but can be applied to other areas of disability as well!! If you'd like to read more on this, follow this link to the Recovery-Oriented Language Guide :) http://www.mhcc.org.au//Recovery-Oriented-Language-Guide_2 Please remember that if you ever feel distressed, there is a 24/7 hotline called Lifeline (13 11 14). I would also encourage you to speak with a trusted adult or healthcare provider (like a GP) so you can get the help you need :)

22.01.2022 Some more notes on inclusivity and diversity, this time specific to people with autism!! I have so many amazing friends and clients who have the most amazing perspectives and ideas for things I have totally missed!

21.01.2022 Hello friends!! Today’s post is around inclusivity within the workplace. There is loads of research that shows how productive and reliable people who are differently-abled are in the workplace! People who are differently-abled also tend to have a knack for thinking outside the box. If you have tasks that seem repetitive and routine-like, like data entry, stacking shelves, sorting and organising etc then someone outside of the regular crowd of job seekers could be the perfe...ct fit! Just like language, our attitudes and behaviours around topics like disability and special needs NEEDS to change. PUBLIC REQUEST! If you have a business and have mundane or routine jobs that need doing for the Christmas rush, please get in contact with me!! Even if it’s only a couple hours work a week, you’ll have a reliable worker and support staff there to help assist where needed. I have some clients who are struggling to find paid work, despite their previous experience and reliable work history. I have been reaching out to a lot of places and am yet to find someone willing to actually pay for a job to be done. So if you know of anything or anyone, please please let me know

20.01.2022 Hi friends!! So recently I’ve had a few interactions with different people around the area of language within a support-focused service. So I’ve decided that over the next month I’ll be sharing the occasional post about strength-based language for disability and mental distress terminology! Let me know in the comments if there’s anything you’re particularly curious about; if you don’t know, ask!! We can only get better if we do so. Have a great week, Brooke xx

12.01.2022 BIG LONG POST ALERT: Essential message is to be kind, not judge, and be aware or have an awareness of the huge needs of others. Being a support worker is about so much more than taking someone to the movies. It is more than a physical disability, a neurodiverse way of seeing the world or a mental health diagnosis. It is so much more than just helping tidy a bedroom or hang some washing. It is more than helping someone make dinner and prep their lunches. It’s more than ...Continue reading

12.01.2022 In some recent discussions with people I’ve heard some really awful use of language around people who are differently abled or neuro-diverse. One of the main things I notice is using someone’s disability as their defining label, which is dehumanising and not at all supportive or inclusive. Here are some examples of things NOT to say, with alternative, person-centred language options as well. A lot of the time we don’t pay attention to the language we use. I’d encourage you to begin thinking about the words you use and how they might come across to other people. There is nothing wrong with not knowing! But now that you do, please spread the awareness so we can encourage inclusivity and acceptance of every person.
