09.01.2022 We will have a small amount of Lord Nelson apples for sale at the market tomorrow. A true 'Currency Lad'. Created in Australia from English parents. The Lord N...elson was first select by an Australian fruit grower in the early 1800s from a large sport of the Kentish Fillbasket. It's qualities were recognized early on, as it was amongst the varieties planted in the first commercial orchards of Western Australia. In 1894, The Australian Town and Country Journal touted the Lord Nelson as suiting the conditions of the [Southern] tablelands and as being much esteemed for culinary purposes. Up until the end of World War 1 it was known to be one of the best cooking apples available at the Sydney markets. Sometime after the War the Australian love affair with cookers waned or to be more accurate, fruit growers and marketeers began to sacrifice taste for tougher varieties, such as the Granny Smith, selected for resistance to bruising and for their keeping qualities. For many years the Lord Nelson remained popular amongst back yard growers as a show apple. When grown in favourable conditions it can reach remarkable sizes. In 1918 a Mr Longhurst was reported as growing a 31oz apple. See more

08.01.2022 Enjoy the abundance of spring at the Braidwood Farmers' Market this Saturday 8.30am to 12.30pm at the National Theatre. With all Covid19 precautions, of course! Our Stall holders sell produce directly to you, helping to keep every dollar spent circulating in the local economy for longer. No bought-in produce is permitted without it having been processed locally into another product using local ingredients. This is what set us apart. With no middle man involved, our producer...s offer quality food that is fresh, local and sold at a price, which is fair to both producer and consumer. Customers are able to ask questions about the production of their food, or how to prepare and store it, and to obtain truly knowledgeable responses. There is no doubt that with Covid19 restrictions we have missed the city dollar, but it has been heartening to witness the robustness of our local economy. By curtailing our external shopping trips, more Braidwood dollars have remained in the community. Thank you Braidwood. See more

01.01.2022 Cornish Pasties at the Farmers' Market tomorrow. 'Then we went to a pastry cook's and brought some Cornish "pasties" for lunch, a sort of turnover with meat and potatoes inside, instead of fruit or preserve.' From the Diary of Francis Kilvert (1840 - 1879).
