24.01.2022 Join us in the Breastolution and help us to prevent breast cancer in women most at risk. The Breastolution is all about the BRCA-P clinical trial. This game-changing research is testing the effectiveness of using a drug called Denosumab to decrease or prevent the risk of developing breast cancer in women who carry a BRCA1 gene mutation.... The BRCA-P prevention clinical trial has been fast-tracked from the laboratory because of the very positive pre-clinical data seen and because a Phase III clinical trial can provide the large numbers of participants needed to find out if it is effective in the shortest timeframe. There are many ways you can support this research and help to save lives from breast cancer. Join us at breastolution.com.au

24.01.2022 Breast Cancer Trials currently has three clinical trials open to metastatic patients, including the CAPTURE clinical trial. CAPTURE is a new clinical trial which hopes to improve outcomes for women and men with ER+, HER-2 negative metastatic breast cancer with the genetic mutation PIK3CA. Oestrogen-receptor positive (ER+) breast cancers account for over 70% of all breast cancers and about 40% of these patients have a PIK3CA mutation. PIK3CA mutations are one of the most comm...only mutated genes in solid cancers and can be found by testing tumour tissue or blood. CAPTURE will use a drug called alpelisib which belongs to a class of drug called a PI3K inhibitor, together with fulvestrant, to see if these patients are more likely to benefit from this new treatment regimen. Learn more about CAPTURE here:https://www.breastcancertrials.org.au/current-clini/capture

22.01.2022 For women with a high risk of developing breast cancer, the IBIS clinical trial proved that tamoxifen reduces breast cancer rates by nearly a third. Long-term follow up of IBIS-I released in 2006, found that tamoxifen reduces the risk of hormone receptor positive breast cancer (which accounts for two thirds of all breast cancers) by 34% in women at increased risk of the disease and that the benefit continues for at least several years even after treatment with the drug has s...topped. In 2014, new extended analysis of tamoxifen showed that the preventative effect of the drug continues for 20 years. We're incredibly proud to have conducted this trial in Australia and New Zealand and recruited 2,674 patients for this important research. 20.01.2022 New research has found that patients with metastatic breast cancer may benefit from having their genome profiled, to help identify tumours that could be treated with a targeted treatment. Called the SEGMENT study, the aim of the proof of concept research was to examine the feasibility of characterising genomic alterations using a customized next generation multi-gene sequencing panel on tumour specimens obtained from patients with incurable and/or advanced breast cancer. The ...project received Breast Cancer Trials Discretionary Funding of $50,000 in year 1 and $50,000 in year 2, which was awarded to Professor Sherene Loi (pictured) from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. 19.01.2022 Sherri is a participant in the POSNOC clinical trial and says the support she has received on the trial has been brilliant. 18.01.2022 It's Women's Health Week. Women's Health Week is a time to stop and learn more about your health and well being, and see if there are any changes you can make to your lifestyle. Currently, there is no way to definitively prevent breast cancer from occurring. However, there are ways to manage some breast cancer risk factors to reduce the likelihood of future breast cancer. Over the course of your lifetime there are a number of risk factors you may be exposed to. Some cannot ...be changed, such as being a woman or having a strong family history, however other factors can be changed through healthy lifestyle decisions and risk-reducing strategies. 17.01.2022 We are very excited to announce that our researchers have recruited the first patient to the Breast MRI Evaluation Study. The Australian Federal Government recently funded MRI via the Medical Benefits Schedule (MBS) to be used in some women with early breast cancer. Under the MBS, MRI can be used where there is a difference between a physical examination of the breast by a doctor (clinical examination) compared to imaging examinations (such as ultrasounds or mammograms) and /...or the results of the MRI may change the type of treatment originally planned. However, this is temporary funding and the Government has asked for more research to find out the best way to use MRI, when it will be most useful, and to find out if it can improve treatment options and patient outcomes. As part of this research request, this study will help us find out if having a breast MRI after being diagnosed with breast cancer might change plans for treatment and how this might affect patient outcomes. The Breast MRI Evaluation Study is open at five sites across WA, NSW and VIC. Two more sites will be open in the future. Learn More: https://www.breastcancertrials.org.au/c/breastevaluationmri

15.01.2022 Our 3 Course Challenge has been non-stop fun and excitement. Most importantly, our 3 Course Challengers raised $133,500! 12.01.2022 It is with great sadness that we deliver the news of the passing of one of the founders of Breast Cancer Trials, Professor Martin Tattersall AO. He was a member of our Scientific Adviso...ry Committee from 1992 2007 and was subsequently appointed to the Independent Data and Monitoring Committee from 2008 until early 2019, which he held the position of Chair since January 2010. In 2019, he received the Breast Cancer Trials Gold Medal at the Annual Scientific Meeting in Adelaide (pictured below with the Chair of our Board, Professor Bruce Mann). Over his expansive career, Professor Tattersall secured approximately $20 million of research funding and was appointed Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney in 1977. He was a member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Cancer Committee for 20 years and he is a Life Member of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) Roll of Honour. He was awarded the Medical Oncology Group of Australia (MOGA) Cancer Achievement Award in 2000 and chaired the Australian Drug Evaluation Committee (ADEC) from 1997-2008. He will be deeply missed by his colleagues and friends at Breast Cancer Trials, and we send our deepest sympathy to his family.

Our researchers have been saving the lives of people affected by breast cancer for more than 40 years and in collaboration with our international partners, have been responsible for some of the greatest breakthroughs in breast cancer treatment and prevention in Australia and around the world. When we began in 1978, the only option for women with breast cancer was a radical mastectomy, Now, more than 40 years later, Breast Cancer Trials has grown to be one of the most respected research groups in the world. We have almost 800 researchers working across more than 100 institutions in Australia and New Zealand. 01.01.2022 New research from Western Australia has found that venom from honeybees could potentially help treat aggressive triple-negative and HER2- enriched breast cancers. The research showed a specific concentration of the venom killed 100 per cent of triple-negative breast cancer and HER2-enriched breast cancer cells within 60 minutes, while having minimal effects on normal cells. The research, which is in its very early stage and has yet to be tested in humans, could potentially help researchers develop new treatments for triple-negative breast cancers.
