12.01.2022 Once Upon A Time Like most people I feel most at ease having a conversation with someone who is at my eye level. When we are both at the same height, I find that my ability to listen and for me to be heard are both on an equal footing. I am a paraplegic and most often can be found in a wheelchair when I am out and about. One of the biggest obstacles I face due to my inability to stand or walk is having a conversation or sharing a yarn with someone standing or seat on a bar s...tool above me. When I enter a bar most patrons are standing or on bar stools and the bar the bar itself is usually at my shoulder height. I feel most uncomfortable as I cannot engage with others and I have trouble getting the bar tender’s attention, let alone near the bar. Since I am usually down at the Bridgetown Club for a drink every week where I often dream of beiing able to magically raise myself up to the height of others so that I can be an equal among them. One Friday evening I became more patical and imagined that if there was a small raised platform next to the bar and a small ramp so that I can wheel onto this platform I would then be at eye-level with those patrons around me and most importantly will be able to be seen (and heard) most easily by the bar keep. I mentioned this idea to a few other patrons and found that I had their immediate support and encouragement for the project. Some, like Sylvia Jones were a wonderful burst of energy and encouragement and when next I was at the club, I took measurements to work out the precise dimensions of the platform. I took a day off work and went to the grumpy blokes at the Bridgetown Mens Shed with my oidea and measurements and before I could say My Goodness My Guinness Merrick showed me a design he had come up with and I helped him build it. The following day I tested the platform at the Bridgetown Club and with plenty of supportive attention the platform was placed next to the bar and I tested it out. Wow! I’m not sure how many of you can really understand just how much of a difference the platform makes. I feel comfortable. I can easily engage in conversation with fellow patrons and bar attendants around me like John, Fox, Bobby, Alex and Peter. Everyone at the club have been wonderfully welcoming the arrival of my platform. My particular needs have been wonderfully accommodated by those at the club.
