08.01.2022 Did you know about THIRST RESPONSE in your horse ? Horses generally will not drink even when they should be quite thirsty. The Thirst Response in horses becomes suppressed when a horse is dehydrated. When humans sweat, we sweat mostly water which leads to a salt build up in our bodies and causes our Thirst Response to kick in and make us thirsty for water. When a horse sweats, it sweats equal amounts of water and salt. By sweating salt at an equal rate to water, the horse... never has a build up of salt in its body, and will not trigger a Thirst Response in the same way a human would. It is important then for this reason, to ensure your horse is given an adequate electrolyte supplement on days of increased sweating, be it from hot weather or hard work. By giving these electrolytes you bring on a salt build up in the horse and trigger the Thirst Response.
