25.01.2022 Inclusive education: - a human right - best for everyone - based on evidence (https://www.cyda.org.au//towards-inclusive-education-a-nec) - supported by law... Inclusive education means that all students are welcomed by their neighbourhood school in age appropriate regular classes and are supported to learn, contribute and participate in all aspects of the life of the school. #InclusionQLD2020 www.qcie.org See more

24.01.2022 Looking forward to watching this!

24.01.2022 Another day, another opportunity to reset. Happy Wednesday everyone!

24.01.2022 A great guide to offering support.

24.01.2022 "Autistic kids manage so many demands on any given day. Sometimes, just getting a child to a stage where they feel able to come to school is a massive step for ...that child and their family. Anything we teachers can do to convey 'I understand you' and give students some sense of control goes a long way toward building those feelings of safety and acceptance." Words of wisdom from I CAN Regional Manager and passionate educator Bree Huggins. 23.01.2022 Present moment awareness refers to "paying attention in a particular way: on purpose and non-judgmentally. It is noticing our tendency to judge and cling to past concerns".(Hayes, Strosahl & Wilson, 2016). #WisdomWednesday #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy

22.01.2022 There is a lot going on in the world at the moment that we have no control of. There is one little thing we can control that may have a massive impact, and that's acknowledging the worth of people around us, particularly those who are struggling right now. #WisdomWednesday

21.01.2022 Image below says: Inclusion is not a strategy to help people fit into the systems and structures which exist in our societies; it is about transforming those systems and structures to make it better for everyone. -Diane Richler, Past-President, Inclusion International

20.01.2022 The latest issue of Science in Autism Treatment is now available. Highly recommend the article review on the "Identification, Evaluation, and Management of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder".

20.01.2022 We find this to be true for many of the children we support in mainstream schools. Its incredibly important to support pupils with social emotional needs with empathy and compassion. Yes we are BCBAs

20.01.2022 Love these four simple strategies for caregivers and teachers to support Autistic behaviours. Written by author Judy Endow. The I CAN Network

20.01.2022 From our good friend Yenn Purkis, shared with permission: "Autistic people are individuals. We are not all maths geniuses, we dont all like trains. I am hopele...ss with technology and much prefer painting. There is no 'typical Autistic'. But I think we probably all like being respected and validated." See more

19.01.2022 Never disregard a parent's concerns about their Autistic child's behaviours at home when you don't see the same in the school environment. The struggle is real for these families. Feelings are often bottled up at school and it is not until the child gets home that they are able to let those feelings out. Be understanding and supportive with parents and keep the lines of communication open between school and home. The I CAN Network

18.01.2022 What are my options when my NDIS plan is about to end? So much useful information in this visual reference for parents navigating their way through the NDIS processes. Thank you The Growing Space

18.01.2022 A heartbreaking but all too familiar story for many parents of children with disabilities.

18.01.2022 The Top 10 difficulties faced at school from an autistic student's perspective: planning for assignments working as part of a group handwriting, in particular being neat... coping with change, e.g. changes in teachers or the timetable coping with bullying or teasing handwriting, in particular being quick enough to keep up copying information from the board doing homework staying calm when other kids annoy me or when the classroom is very noisy talking in front of the class and starting tasks See more

18.01.2022 I wrote this back in 2019. Still relevant today and always will be. For me, it's a work in progress and it's all about beginning to take those small steps towards where we want to be. :)

18.01.2022 One of my favourites!

17.01.2022 #dobetter Had a valuable and thought-provoking conversation recently about seeking assent from our clients. The discussion was in relation to a book chapter we were discussing written by Linda Hayes et al. (1994) about ethics, choice and value. Much of the discussion was around choice and what we, as practitioners, should be mindful of when we’re asking our clients to engage in tasks with us. What I hadn’t considered in my practice was the issue of experience related to choi...ce? The authors suggest choice should be psychologically available to the consumer. Some considerations are: * Has this person had any prior experience with what I’m offering? For genuine choice, direct experience matters more than exposure. * Is there an availability of alternatives and have they been simultaneously presented? * Verbal behaviour repertoire? Don’t assume the response is actually what the person wants. * Try to avoid substituting our own preferences for those of our clients * Perseverance may not always be the best indicator of choice * For some people, choices are really difficult to make. Having the freedom to choose is not always preferred * Be mindful of coercion dressed up’ as choice * #disability #disabilityawareness #autismawareness Hayes, L. J., Adams, M. A., Rydeen, K. L., & Lahren, B. (1994). Chapter 1: Ethics, Choice, and Value. In L. J. Hayes, G. J. Hayes, S. C. Moore, & P. M. Ghezzi (Eds.), Ethical Issues in Developmental Disabilities (pp. 11-43). 13.01.2022 Students with disabilities are more likely to experience exclusionary & reactive discipline practices than students without disabilities. In this practice brief, we describe the top ten intervention strategies educators implement to support all students: https://bit.ly/3lNhuir

12.01.2022 I always remember working with a wonderful little girl in a classroom years ago who, much to the frustration of the teacher, would sit under her desk and read throughout the day. She could always tell me what the teacher said to the class at any time and knew what to do when she went back to her desk. Some children need to be away from the group in order to focus and that is ok

11.01.2022 Meltdowns often result from an accumulation of stressors over time. To the outside world, meltdowns might appear to "come out of nowhere", without an understand...ing of what has been building up inside the individual or recognising how common masking is. 09.01.2022 A research team at the University of Tasmania are investigating parenting stress and how it may differ between parents of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and parents of a typically developing child. They are investigating if the Autism Parenting Stress Index (APSI), a tool designed to measure parenting stress in parents of children with ASD, could be used to help guide allied health professionals to assist parents of children with ASD with their stress. If you're interested in participating in this study, information and the 38 question survey can be located at the link below: https://surveys.utas.edu.au/index.php/167329

09.01.2022 Use compassion to guide your reactions to others. 09.01.2022 Keep expanding the number of tools you can draw from

08.01.2022 Unpacking the discrimination within the Disability Discrimination Act 2005. Courts are ruling that schools are within their rights to suspend a student with a disability who engages in 'anti-social behaviour' on the grounds that the same punitive response would apply to a student without a disability. What?? That's using 'on the same basis' out of context. #dobetter
