13.01.2022 LOCAL BUSINESS PEOPLE AND POLICE SLEEP-OUT FOR THE HOMELESS On one of the coldest nights of the year (Thursday, 8 August 2019) local business people and police ...are participating in a 24-hour homelessness experience, to raise awareness and money for rough sleeping in the Queanbeyan/Palarang Local Government Area (LGA). Local business people and community leaders have volunteered for the experiences including; Johnny Lange (Lange’s Auto Centre), Mathew Griffin (Hotel Queanbeyan), Paul Berger (Octoberfest Queanbeyan Showgrounds), ), Kerrie Jarius (Brilliant Admin solutions), Jenny Cooper (Queanbeyan City Travel), Esma Livermore (Aboriginal Education Consultative Group), Jeremy Howell (Howell Traffic Solutions) and Inspector Sandy Green (NSW Police Force Monaro Police District). The participants will undertake various scenarios relating to real experiences of homeless people, including sleeping rough. Some participants will receive supports from other agencies and volunteers whilst some will have no support or food. Three participants will sleep in shelters, two will sleep in cars and 3 will sleep outdoors to gain a greater understanding of challenges the homelessness face daily. After the 24-hour experiment participants will discuss their experiences followed by an auction to raise money to purchase a ‘sleep bus’ for the local Community. Below is a picture of the bus we hope to obtain, to give a safe and warm place for homeless people to stay in.
