13.01.2022 Have you ever felt like your #brain is full? Maybe when starting a new job, a new course, or a new project? Or do members of your #family feel like theyre shor...t on self-control, upset after doing schoolwork, or like information goes in one ear and out the other? If someone is constantly taking in new information and not #sleeping or #napping enough, in a way, their brain may actually be too full. When you #learn lots of new things, your brain builds connections, but theyre inefficient, ad hoc connections. Your brain needs to prune a lot of those connections away and build more streamlined, efficient pathways. It does that when we sleep. Your brain cleans itself out when you sleep your brain cells shrinking by up to 60% to create space for your glial cells, the gardeners of your brain, to come in take away the waste and prune the synapses. When we wake from a good nights rest were able to think clearly and quickly, because all the pruning and pathway-efficiency that took place overnight has left us with lots of room to take in and synthesise new information which is what we call #learning. Learning happens best when the paths are clear and connect to one another at distinct spots the trees are in place you can see far ahead of you. Its invigorating. This is the same reason naps are so beneficial to your cognitive abilities. When we let our glial cells do their job, they act as our waste removers, pulling up weeds, killing pests, raking up dead leaves, and pruning the brain to optimise it. That last job is done by a type of night gardener called a microglial cells and they specifically prune your synaptic connections. Researchers are just starting to unravel the mystery of how they know what to prune, but what they do know is the synaptic connections that get used less get marked by a protein, C1q. When the microglial cells detect that mark, they bond to the protein and destroy or prune the synapse. This is how your brain makes the physical space for you to build new and stronger connections so you can learn more. Neuroscientist have found using electron microscopy that pruning proliferates in humans after birth, then reaches twice the brains neonatal levels by mid-to-late #childhood. This is one reason why the experiences of #children are key to whether their garden will tend towards nightmares or butterflies ... We can redesign our gardens at any age, but its easier to do any major gardening renovations in youth. We each have control over what our brains decides to delete while we sleep. Its the synaptic connections we dont use that get marked for recycling. The ones we do use are the ones that get watered and oxygenated. So be mindful of what youre thinking about. To take advantage of the brains natural gardening system, simply think about the things that are important to you. Your gardeners will strengthen those connections and prune the ones that you care about less. Its how you help the garden of your brain flower. And remember, its so important daily that we help our children focus on their #strengths, #gifts and wonderful things that make them #unique, no matter how small. Every time our children identify with this information, we are ensuring that its utilised fresh in their synaptic networks and therefore wont be confused with the rubbish and minutiae thats taken out with the trash every night. We can build our family and community gardens together. https://www.scientificamerican.com//why-is-synaptic-pruni/ https://www.fastcompany.com//your-brain-has-a-delete-butto #neurochild #brainscience #healthyfeedback #self
