24.01.2022 Tonight's meeting: Bring and Buy night!

24.01.2022 The new Brisbane Bushwalkers website is launched! Shaun Johnston has a done a mammoth task, on his own, to design and build this website. He had a big act to follow; our old website was designed and maintained by another club member, Peter Lock, and it has been brilliant. The new website uses ‘off the shelf’ technology. It belongs to our club and it is easy to maintain. Shaun had input from the Technology Sub-Committee, initially led by David Sydes and currently led by Kare...n Ryan. It has been a project over three years in the making. Now it is up to the members. There will be teething issues. It may take you a while to get used to the new menus. There may even be buttons or links that don’t quite work. We have had multiple testing sessions, but nothing beats our own members doing their own thing. Please log any issues using the link below https://support.zoho.com/po/brisbanebushwalkersclubinc/home and feel free to make suggestions. Remember though, there is just one person, who has a fulltime job, working on this in his spare time, so be patient. As well as our wonderful leaders and members, our website is one of the club’s greatest assets. This latest website will continue the tradition - the possibilities are endless. Thank you Shaun. 24.01.2022 In 2016 a group of BBW’s trekked in northern India to Ladakh to summit a 6,200m peak called Kang Yatse. During the weeks spent in Ladakh our guides were the most supportive and lovable people on earth. But we noticed that they had minimal clothing and gear compared to us. Some of the guides were new trainees and had to build their trek experience in order to earn money and buy better gear. Please support these young Guides and their families by donating any walking/trekking gear you have. We will see that they get it via the Ladakh Travel company. You can donate your gear left over from the Bring & Buy night on Wednesday 22 February, or simply contact me to make other arrangements.

24.01.2022 Keep an eye out for this development of the old Keperra Quarry. Huge possibility of abseil and rock climbing walls, longer than Kangaroo Point. See the concept images at this link. I went to the ACAQ meeting last night where the developer gave us a briefing.

24.01.2022 Great photo of a great group!

23.01.2022 Huge accolades to Libby for organising this year's Christmas Party - including an awesome rock band. A huge hit. And of course David and his team of helpers who again provided 5-star nibbles on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as a wonderful 3 course meal on Saturday. No-one left hungry!. Great venue and truly one of the best weekends on the BBW calendar

22.01.2022 Had a great meeting last night with the https://www.facebook.com/bushwalkqld/ . BWQ is the representative organisation for al bushwalking clubs in Qld. Bushwalking seems to be as strong as ever with many activities being progressed, so here are just a few items. The planning by YHA Bushwalking for the upcoming Pilgrimage in September at Killarney is going well, with over 90 registrants already, so get your entries in early (see this activity on the BBW calendar). The walks for the Pilgrimage are being finalised and those details will be released in a couple of weeks. The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail event was held earlier this month and was a huge success. Also talks are being had with the Park Rangers and QPWS around involving bushwalkers more in track and campsite monitoring - more on that later.

22.01.2022 Thanks to Marisa Stewart for this excellent photo from Mount Barney. See her post here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10213077976402492&set=o.583409965098435&type=3&permPage=1

21.01.2022 As 2018 draws to a close, the BBW management committee would like to thank everyone who has supported our Club through our many activities and events. We hope you will join us in 2019 for more exciting activities already well into the planning stage by our capable leaders and energetic members. We wish you a safe and Happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you at our Club meetings and activities in 2019.

21.01.2022 Members, we have re-added a Car Pooling Information facility to the Brisbane Bushwalkers website. Read about it here.

20.01.2022 Our bush tick collections have been praised by the Murdoch University. Alex_Gofton, Vector and Water-Borne Pathogen Research Group has advised that they have published a further two studies which involved ticks collected by the Brisbane Bushwalkers. In those studies they found two completely new tick-borne bacteria which appear to occur in at least 10-15 % of paralysis ticks from SEQ and down the NSW coast. These new bacteria are very interesting as they are very closely rel...ated to (but distinctly different from) tick-borne pathogenic bacteria found overseas. However, as yet they have no evidence that these new Australian bacteria cause disease, and there has been no link made between these bacteria and Lyme-like illness in Australia. They thank BBW enormously for our efforts in collecting ticks last season! I have ordered more collection tubes/vials in preparation for the new approaching tick season. The first of these two articles is available at (the 2nd is still being prepared for publishing): http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/asset

20.01.2022 A lovely bit of Club history brought back to life via Facebook. Thanks Barry!

18.01.2022 Thanks for the photos Jo!

17.01.2022 Hello fellow BBWers. I have an adventurous night walk scheduled for the 7th / 8th May, starting at 12am, in the Moogerah Peaks National Park area. Assuming the ...weather is fine, we should be in for some awesome photographic opportunities. There have been a couple of withdrawals from the walk, so there are 5 places still available for interested punters. Take a look at the walk at http://www.brisbanebushwalkers.org.au, and if you're keen, feel free to nominate!

17.01.2022 Good News! Club members can now post photos from their walks on our website. Simply log in, visit the walk's web page, and click the Photo Album button to get started. For more information, check out the linked news article.

17.01.2022 Fabulous first walk yesterday with Brisbane Bushwalkers Club 6 hours 17.4km in beautiful rain forest. Thanks to Bec for the lift, Diana for leading, Sharon for being the tail and some wonderful company

17.01.2022 Thanks to all who came to last night's meeting to see Anthony's presentation about tramping in New Zealand. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 11th May, and at that meeting, Richard Duczmal will be presenting about his experience backpacking the Via Francigena in Europe. Mark it in your calendars!

16.01.2022 Did you know that there is an excellent free source of digital historical maps for all of Queensland right here in Brisbane ? See this website for that list and... access. Also please note that the previous SunMap 1:25000 series which stopped print production in 2013, is currently being scanned by the same organisation (Museum, of Lands, Mapping and Surveying) for publication in the near future. 15.01.2022 Joining a bushwalking club: not as tricky as it seems (or as this climb!) Sign up online at https://www.brisbanebushwalkers.org.au/membership and kick off your Brisbane Bushwalkers membership by attending a New Member Induction walk, where you'll learn - how to stay safe - what gear you need - how to choose an appropriate walk for your skill level ... - and much more! New Member Inductions walks are already scheduled for 9th, 23rd, 26th and 30th of January. What are you waiting for? See you on the track!

15.01.2022 Whilst you have some spare time over the Christmas break, have a watch and listen to these short videos made by Bill Kitson, Land Museum. He explains the uses of surveying equipment and techniques used in the Queensland environment - very useful for us bushwalkers to know. https://www.youtube.com/playlist

15.01.2022 On 28 Jan, we are trialling a new members signup day. Normally, new members are required to attend a club meeting in order to join. This trial is a bit different. Sample a walk, learn a bit about the club, and sign up on the day. Have a look at the attached link, and if you're interested, shoot an email across to Peter, the club's New Members Officer, at [email protected] for more details.... https://www.brisbanebushwalkers.org.au//new-members-sign-d

14.01.2022 How's this for 1 day of fruit. Half a banana (coated with lemon juice and coconut), half an apple, 2 pineapple pieces and 2 dates. Weighing in at a dehydrated 40gms and simply delicious.

13.01.2022 Fun folklore: Even though Brisbane Bushwalkers walkers encounter snakes quite regularly out on the trail (or off it!), only one snake bite is known of in the club's history - and it didn't even occur on a walk! Nevertheless, it is important to be prepared for the worst. These are some good, basic tips for preventing snake bite, and dealing with it in the event that it occurs.... New Brisbane Bushwalkers members are briefed in snake bite prevention and care during the MiniMaxS days we regularly run. If you're a new member, we highly encourage you to nominate for a MiniMaxS!

08.01.2022 Just a reminder folks who navigate, that the Earth's natural magnetic forces are considerably weak and magnetic fields from electronics can easily exceed it, overpowering the compass needle. See how the needle changes in my little experiment, just by placing an e-device near it. I awoke on one walk with my needle pointing the other way ! Possibly because i had a Charger unit stored next to it in my pack.

08.01.2022 Brisbane Bushwalkers Club is now accepting entries for its 2017 Photographic Competition. Members may view the full details and find out how to submit entries on our website. We look forward to seeing your entries!

04.01.2022 Hello BBW members. A couple of small updates to our website were made over the weekend. First, we have enabled daily notifications when comments are made on photographs, trip reports etc. If you receive comments on your photo, the website will send you an email at 6am the next morning letting you know. You can opt out of comment notifications by visiting your Account Details page, clicking on the Preferences foldout, and clicking the checkbox that says "Don't email me about... comments on things I post". Second, we noticed some users have been experiencing issues where photos look fine on their computer, but are 'rotated' when uploaded to the website. This issue has now been fixed. In addition, all photos that were previously 'rotated' when uploaded to the website have now been correctly oriented. This includes profile photos. Third, you may have noticed that you can 'like' a photograph, photo album or trip report, and see the number of 'likes'. Now, we've made the 'like' count clickable, so you can see who actually 'liked' the content. It will appear as a popup with the list of members. As always, plenty more to come! Hope you enjoy these new features. Shaun, Web Administrator / Volunteer Programmer
