21.01.2022 Dr Slack presented at the TAMIS: Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery Workshop at Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital on Thursday 19th October. Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) gives the colorectal surgeon the ability to expand their skills to include the use of local excision from the distal rectum to the mid and proximal rectum. TAMIS enables the resection of lesions in the rectum using advanced access devices and standard laparoscopic instrumentation.

19.01.2022 Dr Gillespie and his team at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital have just had a paper accepted to the Dietitians Association of Australia National Conference in Sydney this year. The paper looks at the impact of early dietetic consultation in patients with anorectal pelvic floor complaints. 2 years ago the Metro South functional colorectal unit, where Dr Gillespie and Dr Slack work, implemented a dedicated dietetic pelvic health clinic. Dietitians saw patients with constipation, di...arrhoea, faecal incontinence and irritable bowel syndrome. 25% of these people had symptom resolution with dietetic intervention, with a high level of patient satisfaction. Dietitians clearly can make a big impact in this cohort of patients and we are grateful to our dietitian, Laura OBrien for the great work she does for our patients at Brisbane Colorectal! The paper is due for presentation in May. See more

19.01.2022 Dr Gillespie recently just returned from a trip to Guangzhou, China, where he attended the Chinese Digestive Diseases Week and gave a talk on the multidisciplinary management of anorectal pelvic floor disorders, showcasing the Brisbane Academic Functional Colorectal Unit where he and Dr Slack work. He also attended the International Summit for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Early Colorectal Cancer, where he gave a presentation on the results and progress of the Australian N...ational Bowel Cancer Screening Program. Our National Bowel Cancer Screening Program started in 2006 and has offered all Australians aged 50-74 biennial screening since 2012. People aged 40-49 are also eligible if they request it. Brisbane Colorectal strongly encourages all Australians to participate, as the program has resulted in less colorectal cancer-related mortality since it started - this is probably because of earlier diagnosis in people without symptoms who undergo screening. Bowel cancer is much easier to cure when diagnosed early. China does not currently have a colorectal cancer screening program but are considering their options. It was a great opportunity to meet many Chinese colorectal surgeons, to hear of the issues they face in their country with the large population they serve, and to share experiences and new technology. 18.01.2022 Dr. Gillespie has had a paper accepted to the European Crohns & Colitis Organisations Congress in Vienna, Austria. In conjunction with a team of gastroenterologists from Logan Hospital, including colleague Dr. Carolyn McIvor, the study aimed to assess the prevalence of defecatory difficulties amongst patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Gillespie and the team at Logan Hospital has long suspected that these problems may be more common amongst patients with Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis. The study confirms this, with over 90% of patients with inflammatory bowel disease suffering from obstructed defecation. The paper is being presented in February in Vienna.

18.01.2022 Dr Gillespie presented at the Australian Gastroenterology Week conference earlier this week. He spoke on the role of surgery in Crohns disease to an audience of gastroenterologists, and to an audience of endoscopy nurses on rectal dysfunction. All well received and interesting topics! 16.01.2022 Dr Slack and Dr Gillespie attended the Mater GP Education Conference at the Gold Coast over the weekend. They gave a presentation on "Disorders of the colon, rectum and anus" which was well received, including an update on the latest developments in Colorectal surgery. Discussion included new techniques in cancer surgery, functional anorectal disorders and haemorrhoids.

16.01.2022 Dr. Gillespie attended the Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopy & Surgery Pelvic Floor Symposium over the weekend, as faculty. He gave a lecture on the role of anorectal physiology tests and imaging in functional colorectal disorders, and also participated in a panel discussion on the management of complex pelvic floor cases across specialities. 06.01.2022 Brisbane Colorectal supports the inaugural Australasian Birth Trauma Association’s conference - Uniting professionals in birth trauma care. As founders of the Brisbane Academic Functional Colorectal Unit, we have found that the most common cause of functional colorectal conditions is obstetric trauma. This is an often overlooked, but very important and common problem in the Western World. Hope the conference goes well and can shed more light on how to improve care for our patients and to prevent obstetric pelvic injuries.

04.01.2022 The fear that symptoms might be due to cancer was enough to prevent one-in-four of those surveyed from scheduling an appointment. What would you do if you were experiencing symptoms you thought might be due to cancer? #BowelCancerAustralia

03.01.2022 Brisbane Colorectal trial a novel haemorrhoid treatment at Mater Private Hospital Haemorrhoidal energy therapy is a novel technique in the treatment of symptomatic haemorrhoids. This therapy involves a small electrical current being passed across the haemorrhoids, resulting in heating of the haemorrhoids to 55 degrees causing reduced blood flow and scarring. Dr Tim Slack performed the first treatment of haemorrhoids using this technique at Mater Private Hospital today, and Dr... Chris Gillespie will also be shortly starting the treatment as well for his patients. Reports cite minimal discomfort and good effect with the therapy, which can be done in a short period of time during a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy under light sedation. It is a good alternative to rubber band ligation and Dr Slack and Dr Gillespie look forward to offering this to the private patients of our practice. See more

03.01.2022 Dr Chris Gillespie, along with his colleague Dr Andrea Warwick, hosted the inaugural Brisbane Functional Colorectal Conference over the weekend of 15/16 March. Dr Tim Slack chaired the session on chronic pain management and physiotherapy techniques. The conference was a great success, with over 200 delegates and international guest speakers from Europe and the UK. These included Dr Carolynne Vaizey from London, Dr Bruno Roche from Geneva, Dr Peter Christensen from Aarhus in D...enmark, and Dr Gabriele Naldini from Pisa in Italy. The conference covered all aspects of GI dysfunction including anorectal physiology testing, obstetric trauma, irrigation techniques and new theories on pelvic floor problems. There were workshops on biofeedback therapy and techniques for rectal prolapse, as well as the Peristeen therapy session being given by its inventor, Peter Christensen. Delegates came from all around Australia and New Zealand, along with parts of South East Asia and other parts of the world. We thank the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia & New Zealand for its support, and look forward to the next meeting! See more

01.01.2022 Today is World Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about advanced bowel cancer, also known as metastatic colorectal cancer (m...CRC). Together, and with your help, we intend to put advanced bowel cancer firmly on the agenda of governments, health care providers and key decision-makers around the world, as we campaign for further research to address gaps in knowledge and support the development of new, innovative and effective treatments. By raising awareness among patients, clinicians and policy-makers about the full range of tests and treatments to be made available and campaigning together, we know we can make a difference. Advanced bowel cancer doesnt recognise borders, and neither do we. For more information on the campaign and to find out how to get involved, please visit the Get Personal website at http://www.getpersonal.global/ #BowelCancerAustralia #GetPersonal #WorldmCRCDay
